Earning My Spurs - with Terry Fenwick

The World of Lord Russell PodCast Talk Show proudly presents 'Earning Your Spurs' with Terry Fenwick.

Terry is a former English football player and manager played either as a centre-back or a full-back.

During his playing career, Terry made a total of 455 appearances in the English Football League for Crystal Palace Football Club, Queens Park Rangers FC, Tottenham Hotspur, Leicester City Football Club and Swindon Town Football Club.

Terry Fenwick made twenty appearances for the England football team from 1984 to 1988, and represented the country at the 1986 FIFA World Cup in #Mexico.

Terry was one of five England players, in the quarter-final against #Argentina, at the Azteca Stadium, in Mexico City, Mexico, that formed the build up to the "Goal of the Century". Yes, not 'The Hand of God' goal, but the mesmerising Maradonna goal that is probably, and arguably, the best ever World Cup Finals goals in the hostory of the FIFA World Cup.

There is even a plaque on the side of the Azteca Stadium that sybolises the Maradonna goal, at the stadium against England, in the 1986 World Cup quarter-final for Argentina.

Terry Fenwick began his managerial career in the mid-1990s with Portsmouth Football Club from 1995 to 1998. Terry later had executive and managerial stints at Southall, Ashford Town and Northampton Town Football Club.

Since the early 2000s, Terry Fenwick is primarily managing Trinidad and Tobago, where he has been in charge of San Juan Jabloteh (on three occasions), Central and the Trinidad and Tobago national football team.

What a show this is, and exclusive on The World of Lord Russell PodCast Talk Show and the Lord Russell YouTube Channel.

I'm Looking forward to seeing you all on the inside.

    Dr. Lesley-Ann Noel

    Dr. Lesley-Ann Noel

Our paths have crossed several times over the past couple of years, but I finally managed to sit down and chat with the one and only Dr. Lesley-Ann Noel. Along with being an author, design educator, and community builder, she is one of the editors behind The Black Experience in Design: Identity, Expression & Reflection, a compilation of essays from over 70 Black designers, artists, curators, educators, students, and researchers.

Our conversation began with some good news about a recent grand that she won, and from there we talked about her areas research and what she teaches. Dr. Noel spoke about growing up in Trinidad and Tobago and studying design in Brazil, including becoming a Fulbright Scholar and arriving at North Carolina State University. She also talked about motivation, ambition, and about the importance of finding your own community.

Take Dr. Noel’s advice — the world of design is a lot bigger than you think!

    Ayrïd Chandler

    Ayrïd Chandler

We're off to the Caribbean this week to talk with the incredibly talented Ayrïd Chandler. Ayrïd is the head of her own studio, Ayrïd by Design, where she offers graphic design services with a focus on brand and identity design. She also teaches at the University of the West Indies in St. Augustine, where she's helping to educate and inspire Trinidad and Tobago's next generation of designers.

Ayrïd starts off talking about her goals for the year, and from there we get into the differences between being a designer in Trinidad vs. being a designer in America. She also spoke about what draws her to brand and identity design, and talked about entering Savannah College of Art and Design, moving back home, and how she's making a name for herself there. Ayrïd's path really shows us that as Black designers, we share a similar sense of community no matter where we are, so you're never alone. Huge thanks to Rebecca Brooker of Queer Design Club for the introduction!

Why The Growing Black Community in Saigon Created Their Own Facebook Group | Hayden Lowry S7 E7

Join the Seven Million Bikes Community.

This is another fascinating deep dive into the live of someone who has chosen to make Vietnam home for over a decade.

Hayden Lowry runs Caribê Jamaican Patties, is a freelance video post-production specialist, and the admin for the "Black in Saigon" Facebook group.

"I was bequeathed it by a lovely, smart and intelligent lady named Hillary who is a lawyer and she was living out here. We had the the opportunity to meet each other mere months before I moved to Vietnam in 2005, and at that time you literally could count black Westerners then on one hat, there were so few of us."

Among various topics discussed Hayden explains the ‘Black In Saigon’ Facebook group was created to give this community a safe space to ask questions that would often be the subject of disdain or even abuse in Expat groups on Facebook. As anyone who has lived in Saigon and used some of these groups, they are familiar with how toxic they can be. So it is understandable why the Black Community in Saigon would want to create their own group.

    027. Plastic Free July & Circular Carnival with Danii Mcletchie of Carnicycle

    027. Plastic Free July & Circular Carnival with Danii Mcletchie of Carnicycle

Ignighted by her love for Trinidad and Tobago Carnival, an appreciation for the environment, and an aversion to over consumption, Danii Mcletchie co-founded Carnicycle to bridge the gap between carnival culture and sustainability. On this episode host Derval Barzey sits down with Danii to discuss becoming plastic positive.

This social entrepreneur gives new life to single-use plastic used in costumes and carnival events, reducing the ecological footprint by integrating principles of sustainability and circularity  in the 'greatest show on earth.'

Carnicycle is the #1 Carnival costume recycle. Since launching in November 2018, Carnicycle has recycled over 200 costumes. The COVID pandemic forced their pivot towards more online engagement with webinars, talks and other virtual activities, until the parade of the bands resumes.

    Cherry-Ann Davis

What happens when a Trini woman ends up in the largest city in Switzerland to learn design? You have Cherry-Ann Davis, a graduate design student at Zurich University of the Arts, and a self-proclaimed creator of visuals and words. Quite a combination, right?

Cherry-Ann and I talk about her design thesis, as well as her work at a feminist design publication called The Futuress. Cherry-Ann also spoke on growing up in Trinidad and Tobago, how she switched her career from marketing to design, and spoke on finding community in an entirely new place. According to Cherry-Ann, you should stay open to anything because you'll never know where it will take you. I can't argue with that!

Everyone Can Feel At Home in Trinidad: Doubles, Bake and Shark and Carnival with Duane Swift

Everyone Can Feel At Home in Trinidad: Doubles, Bake and Shark and Carnival with Duane Swift

This week Duane Swift joins the show to share his home island of Trinidad. Part of the nation of Trinidad and Tobago, this Island has joined a lot of economic prosperity throughout the years, and its resident represent all walks of life. Indian, Caribbean, African, Middle Eastern, European, you  name it, Trinidad has got it. We begin with a brief history and background of the island - once known as Irie by the natives - and it's subsequent discovery by Christopher Columbus, the influx of African people through the slave trade, then a wave of Indian immigrants from a British-rule run indentured servant program, and a more recent wave of immigrants from Syria. I learn about doubles, the Trinidadian national dish, a street food of two pieces of bara served with chick peas. Duane teaches me what it means to go "liming" in Trinidad, and how these days one of the preferred drunk foods of the country is a gyro - but with some extra scotch bonnet peppers thrown in there for a Trinidadian twist. Duane waxes about Carnival, the bands you play in, the costumes you wear, and the unification the Island feels for this holiday. Finally we talk about everyone's favorite subject, alcohol!
