Mark 11 | Jesus' Triumphal Entry, Fig Tree Cursing, and Temple Cleansing

Thanks for listening. Please leave us a review HERE.

Discover the profound contrasts of jubilation and confrontation in the final days leading up to the crucifixion of Jesus. As we journey through Mark 11, we're met with a triumphant entry that quickly becomes a tableau of challenge and revelation. With the echoes of "Hosanna" still in the air, we watch Jesus, in a symbolic act, curse a barren fig tree and turn the tables in the temple. This episode promises to reveal the deeper implications behind these actions, inviting you to examine the authenticity of your own faith and the practices that may stand between you and true spiritual fruitfulness.

As the palm branches lay trampled, the questions of faith and authority rise from the dust of Jerusalem’s streets. We recount the narratives of Mark 11, engaging with the potent symbolism of Jesus’ actions, from the cursing of the fig tree to the cleansing of the temple. This episode is a compelling exploration of divine power, challenging the commercialization of worship, and the courage it takes to confront deeply entrenched beliefs. Join us as we contemplate the enduring message of these ancient stories and their resonance in our modern quest for an authentic spiritual journey.

In Mark 11, Jesus' triumphal entry into Jerusalem marks the beginning of a pivotal week in his ministry. This event fulfills prophecy and demonstrates Jesus' kingship, as crowds welcome him with palm branches and shouts of "Hosanna!" As he enters the temple, Jesus encounters merchants selling goods and money changers, prompting him to overturn tables, condemning the exploitation of the sacred space. This episode highlights Jesus' authority and his commitment to true worship.

The following day, Jesus curses a fig tree for not bearing fruit, symbolizing God's judgment on Israel for its spiritual barrenness. This act serves as a warning to the religious leaders, emphasizing the importance of genuine faith and righteousness. In response, Jesus teaches his disciples about the power of prayer, encouraging them to have faith and believe that their petitions will be granted.

The chapter concludes with Jesus' authority being questioned by religious leaders who challenge his actions and teachings. Jesus counters their inquiries with questions of his own, revealing their hypocrisy and lack of understanding. This chapter sets the stage for the conflict that will ultimately lead to Jesus' arrest and crucifixion, highlighting themes of authority, faith, and the consequences of religious hypocrisy.

Fortifying Marital Bonds: Embracing Worship, Service, and Spiritual Growth Together

Have you ever wondered how to breathe new life into your marriage while walking a spiritual path hand-in-hand with your significant other? Prepare to unlock the secrets of a fortified union and the profound impact of worship and service on our lives. I'm Randy, and in our vibrant discussion, we'll reveal how the upcoming annual marriage retreat isn't just a calendar event—it's a vital checkpoint for couples eager to cement their bonds. We go beyond the surface, looking at how embracing collective purpose over personal desires, as guided by the wisdom of Ephesians, can transform relationships and communities alike.

Exploring the essence of true worship, we'll uncover how it transcends physical spaces and leads to a life marked by freedom and heartfelt service. Amidst the laughter and candid conversations, we dissect the tools for personal sanctification that are essential for spiritual growth—hope, joy, strength, humility, and love. We'll also cast a vision for the church's future, teasing the direction we're heading as we navigate a world where many are unaffiliated with faith organizations. Join us as we ponder the transition from calling God 'Yahweh' to the more intimate 'Father,' an evolution that symbolizes our own journey toward spiritual intimacy.

Event and Everyday (Worship Matters - Week 4)

Event and Everyday (Worship Matters - Week 4)

Worship is both an event and an everyday experience.  After gathering as the Church for corporate worship, we are sent out as the Church to worship every day of our individual lives.  We are Jesus' instruments, and as His Life is expressed through us, He receives glory, honor, and praise.  All areas of our lives become an opportunity to worship the Lord our God!

Romans 12:1-2: I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship.  Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.

    One True God

    One True God
We are always worshiping something; you can’t turn it off. The real question to consider is “what” are you worshiping? As we dig into 1 Kings, we see that people where worshiping false gods and idols, and Pastor Matt shows us that in reality, we aren’t that different. Our idols look different than in the days of Elijah, but we are still trying to replace God’s rightful place in our hearts with objects, ideas, and people. These idols are never fully reachable, and they're constantly upping the stakes of how to reach them and eventually push us toward self-destruction. What things are in place of God in your heart? Call out to God in prayer and begin the act of repentance. If you’ve got questions or need to talk with a pastor, then check out our next steps here – www.burnthickory.com/next

074 – What Is at the Heart of True Worship?

074 – What Is at the Heart of True Worship?

074 – True worship is deeply spiritual

This week's episode takes you on a journey back to Jacob's well when Jesus is talking to a Samaritan woman at Jacob's well.

Imagine for a minute that you are there as one of Jesus's disciples and how you felt when you saw your Master talking to "that woman."

But when you found out what they were talking about, you realized that Jesus had just revealed a powerful truth: God is Spirit and must be worshiped in spirit and truth.

    What is true worship?

Jesus was very specific in how he defined worship and that we must worship the Father. It's not about where you are or how you hold your hands, or a certain ritual. True worship is in the heart.

Jesus knew that we can go through the outward motions and say the right words, but it's what's going on inside our thinking that matters.

True worship changes us. It purifies us. It baptizes us in God's love. And it transforms the way we see and treat others.

    How do you worship?

When you worship, is it a function of the human mind and intellect? Is it about how many Bible verses you know and can quote by memory? Is it about how elaborate your prayers are?

    Hopefully not.

The best way to worship is not just with your human mind. Have you ever thought about worshiping God the way Jesus did? Paul says we have "the mind of Christ." Isn't it time to use it?

That means we can worship like Jesus

Since we have the mind of Christ, we can worship God the way he did. We can love the way Jesus did. And our lives will bear the fruit of the Spirit the way Jesus did.

Worshiping God means loving all God's children

When you know God as infinite Spirit, filling the universe with the divine presence, you will worship  Him in spirit and in truth. And you will be able to help people in the same way Jesus did.

When the "Samaritan woman" of today comes to you, you will not run away  or deem her unworthy of your attention. You will see the opportunity to help someone and share the love of Christ.

To study the Bible verses quoted in today's episode, check out the show notes: thebiblespeakstoyou.com/074.

I would love to hear your thoughts about worshiping God.

    Have a great week.

    Blessings,
    James

    SPIRITUAL WARFARE - 2020 - PRAYER

    SPIRITUAL WARFARE - 2020 - PRAYER

"For we are not fighting against flesh-and-blood enemies, but against evil rulers and authorities of the unseen world, against mighty powers in this dark world, and against evil spirits in the heavenly places." - Ephesians 6:12

Many people believed this year would be a year of symbolic 20/20 vision, it actually turned out to be a year where only those who live, walk and pray in the SPIRIT will have 20/20 vision, seeing and discerning what is really happening in the unseen world. We need to stand up against authorities and mighty powers of this world but only if you are living in the Spirit, on your knees in communion with God.

We hope this episode blesses your life and gives you a better understanding of SPIRITUAL WARFARE. If you would like to support our channel all you have to do like, share, and subscribe!
