The Cinémathèque Française launches two revolutions

The Cinémathèque Française launches two revolutions

In 1940s France, a little 50-seat cinema opened that would launch one revolution on international movie screens...and arguably a second one in the streets of Paris. Host Rico Gagliano delves into the wild history of the Cinémathèque Française and its legendary founder, Henri Langlois.

Featuring interviews with directors Barbet Schroeder (BARFLY, REVERSAL OF FORTUNE) and Luc Moullet (BRIGITTE ET BRIGITTE), plus New Yorker writer Louis Menand, Amy Nicholson of the podcast "Unspooled" and many more.

The second season of the MUBI Podcast titled “Only in Theaters” tells surprising stories of individual cinemas that had huge impacts on film history, and in some cases, history in general.

After listening, check out an extended interview with Barbet Schroeder in the latest “MUBI Podcast: Expanded” piece. The filmmaker dives deeper into memories of the French New Wave, talks about his Oscar-winning film REVERSAL OF FORTUNE, and recalls working with Pink Floyd in the late ‘60s. Read the article here.

LOST ANGELES Episode 12 Guest Matt Severson of THE MARGARET HERRICK LIBRARY

LOST ANGELES Episode 12 features a fascinating conversation with special guest MATT SEVERSON, Director of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences’ MARGARET HERRICK LIBRARY.  LOST ANGELES host Laura Craven sits down for an exclusive interview at this world-renowned, non-circulating reference and research collection devoted to the history and development of the motion picture as an art form and an industry.  Established in 1928 and now located in Beverly Hills, the library is open to the public and used year-round by students, scholars, historians and industry professionals.  Matt and Laura get into the library's massive collection, including original scripts, drawings, sketches, interviews, objects, papers, documents and more from Hollywood’s most legendary studios, films and filmmakers.  Matt also talks about how he landed his dream job there and the films that inspired him to become a reference historian for this esteemed organization.  Check out www.oscars.org/library for more information.

Included at the end of the episode is an exclusive piece of audio from the library’s Alfred Hitchcock Papers collection, Francois Truffaut’s interview with Hitchcock, originally recorded for the classic film book Hitchcock/Truffaut.  In this segment, the two directors (and their french/english translator!) discuss some important details about “Rear Window.”  Special thanks to Matt and the Margaret Herrick Library/AMPAS for the use of this fascinating piece of film history!
