Waar andere antivirale middelen het mechanisme achter het binnendringen van de cel of bijvoorbeeld specifieke eiwitten proberen aan te vallen, hebben ze in dit onderzoek hun pijlen gericht op het mechanisme achter recombinatie. Daarbij dringen meerdere virussen de cel in die vervolgens samengevoegd worden tot een nieuw - vaak gevaarlijker - virus.

Eerst was het nodig om op moleculair niveau te begrijpen hoe recombinatie plaatsvindt. Toen dat was gelukt konden ze gaan kijken of dit ook te beïnvloeden was. In plaats van het kopieermechanisme te blokkeren, gebruikten ze een bestaande experimentele virusremmer om het in een soort overdrive te zetten. Daardoor bestond het uiteindelijke genoom uit zoveel verschillende knipsels dat het niet langer een levensvatbaar virus was.

Elektronische apparaten hebben stroom nodig, en die stroom komt dikwijls uit batterijen. Maar die batterijen vereisen kostbare grondstoffen. Voor een duurzamere wereld is het beter om bepaalde apparaten op termijn zonder batterijen te laten werken. Dat kan nu al, en wie een beetje handig is met programmeren, kan via het platform BFree nu al meedoen aan de ontwikkeling.

Dit bespreken we met twee onderzoekers van de TU Delft: Vito Kortbeek, promovendus Embedded and Networked Systems en zijn supervisor, professor Przemek Pawelczak.

Het is allang geen geheim meer dat bedrijven, maar ook overheidsinstellingen, heel veel informatie van én over ons bijhouden. En hoewel we in ons land met de AVG op zich goed beschermd moeten zijn tegen misbruik, wordt onze digitale privacy toch lang niet zo serieus genomen als zou moeten.

Tenminste, dat stelt privacy-onderzoeker Jaap-Henk Hoepman van de Radboud Universiteit, in zijn nieuwe boek Privacy is Hard, and Seven Other Myths - Achieving Privacy Through Careful Design én in deze uitzending.
