    S4E4 -- Ultraman Arizona 2023 Race Preview

    S4E4 -- Ultraman Arizona 2023 Race Preview

Ultraman Arizona 2023 takes place from March 17 - 19.  I have returning to the podcast, race director, Jen McVeay, and the 515 announcer extraordinaire, Steve King to preview the athletes competing in this year's race.

It is a smaller field with just 3 women and 19 men, but some great athletes will be vying to set the official race records in their respective age groups and overall, as last year’s race (the inaugural) had to cancel the swim due to poor water conditions.

Join us as we discuss the resumes of these Ultra athletes so you know who to follow through the race socials for updates.

Also, as part of a double episode release this week, I have S4E5 also dropping simultaneously.  Check out my Athlete in Profile for UMAZ with Shane Duffy.

    S4E2 -- Ultraman Florida 2023 Race Preview

Race director of Ultraman Florida, Jen McVeay, and the voice of Ultraman, Steve King join me to preview the athletes attending the 2023 version of the race on February 9 - 11.  We discuss some of the athletes' race resumes and connections to the Ultra family.

In the second part of the episode I have a conversation with one of the athletes - Amy Jo Jenkins from Arkansas.  This will be Amy’s first 515 distance event and she shares some of the anxieties of a rookie 515 athlete who will be racing with a rookie crew.

S4E1 -- Ultraman Florida Athlete in Profile : Francesco Magisano

S4E1 -- Ultraman Florida Athlete in Profile : Francesco Magisano

Francesco Magisano is my Ultraman Florida athlete in profile.  At ten months old Francesco was diagnosed with eye cancer and by age 16 things went completely dark with blindness for him.  He found his way to sport through Achilles International, a global adaptive sports and advocacy organization serving people with disabilities.  That has led to him working for Achilles as the director of the New York metro region where he also leads a Saturday run group in Central Park.

He will be the first blind athlete to attempt Ultraman Florida, but the third blind athlete to compete at a 515 distance race.   Raphael Jamie has previously completed UltraMX 515 and John Domandl was the first, in 2015 at Ultraman Australia.

Brian Hammond, Francesco's coach, also joins the conversation to speak about his role as his guide for the race.   Brian is an alumni of UMFL from 2016 and an experienced crew member who has a long ultra resume to back up his advice.

    S3E13 (Part B) -- 2022 World Champions – Dede Griesbauer & Yvonne Timewell

    S3E13 (Part B) -- 2022 World Champions – Dede Griesbauer & Yvonne Timewell

For the final episode of this season 515 is offering you a special double episode.   This is Part B.

    Link to Part A

My two Ohana guests today share a number of ideas that have propelled them to the top of the podium in world events in 2022.  They are both in their 50’s; they both believe in doing more than just swimming, biking and running to stay in shape; and they believe the records they are setting are only there to push other women to break them.

    Part A
My first guest, Dede Griesbauer, is currently the oldest pro triathlete on the planet at the age of 52.  She smashed the 50 - 59 age group record at the Ultraman World Championship in 2022 where she topped the women’s podium against, what Steve King states is, one of the toughest women's fields to face off on the big island.  Dede proudly coaches in the Julie Dibbens crew and is also a broadcaster for Ironman Live when not training or racing herself.

    Part B
The second guest is Yvonne Timewell, amateur triathlete from Penticton, BC, who won the 2022 Ironman World Championship in the 55-59 age group.  Yvonne used the toughness she learned on day 3 of the Ultraman Canada race in 2014 to propel her to multiple podium finishes in Kona over the years.

Both guests share great stories and tips that will surely entertain and help any athlete.

Ageing Up: Getting Faster as You Get Older

Ageing Up: Getting Faster as You Get Older
Is there an age where you shift from trying to set all-time personal records to being the best you can be at your current age? Today's episode features two stand-out veteran athletes, triathlon legend Kurt Madden (66), and pro triathlete Dede Griesbauer (51), who share their wisdom and tangible tips for excelling in triathlon as your age advances. How does training, nutrition, and mindset change as you get older? Kurt and Dede are ready to answer this and much more as they share stories about getting older, wiser, and staying strong!

World Record Holder Dede Griesbauer Shares Secrets to Longevity

World Record Holder Dede Griesbauer Shares Secrets to Longevity

“The little things that I could sort of blow off and not pay attention to when I was 35, I absolutely have to pay attention to now. So that’s I think the only thing for me that's changed in the last 15 years is I can't screw around with the small stuff anymore. It's all big stuff.” - Dede Griesbauer

Today's guest is Dede Griesbauer, one of the most remarkable triathletes competing today.

After speaking with Dede, it’s very clear that her longevity in the triathlon is fueled by her passion for the sport and the lifestyle that comes with it. It was so refreshing to speak about her many years of competing at such a high level and her recent world record in the Ultraman Florida event in 2020.

This was a conversation where we got to explore the important role things like passion, curiosity and setting the right expectations play when it comes to optimizing athletic performance. The big takeaway, however, may be how those three things contribute significantly to the joy you experience on a daily basis throughout your journey to your own personal greatness.

Without a doubt, there’s a lot of lessons to gain from this conversation and we can’t wait to have you listen and be inspired by the insights Dede is so open to sharing with others.

    Timestamped Show Notes

(3:42) The similarities between Boulder and Stanford…

    (6:36) The power of a team, a community, and a supportive environment…

    (8:18) Goal-setting through the years…

(11:40) A bucket list of events and discovering new challenges…

(18:19) Thoughts on curiosity in the sport… “When I got home, I was told I'd never run again. And I had to literally  learn how to walk again without a limp. So when you talk about curiosity, I was like, “Well, first of all, I want to be able to walk again because that's kind of important.” But then I got curious, when the guy told me I'd never run again, I was like, “Mm. Uh uh. Nope. You're wrong.” And so then it became, “How far can I get with this?””

(20:10) Working through goals and the pressures on the newer generations of athletes…

(23:31) “I just truly loved the sport so much. And that makes me happy. Like I've had friends and training partners that find motivation from the fact that if they don't win this race, they can't pay their rent. And for me, that would kill me. That kind of motivation doesn't serve me at all.”

    (25:33) Dede’s number one pet peeve…

(29:23) Focusing on ALL the little things…

(34:26) Staying power requires attention to the details… “You're not going to be 24 forever. And the sooner you learn these lessons, the better. If you're this good now, think about how good you could be if you paid attention to this other stuff.”

(36:48) An exhausting and unsustainable approach…

(38:28) Chasing happiness instead of results…

    (40:13) Thoughts on coaching…

(44:24) “I think there's gotta be a partnership where you trust enough in your coach and their philosophy and what they're doing and why they're doing it the way they're doing it. And once you have established that trust, it's really easy to just be like, go ahead, write the workout. I'll do it.”
