025 I Reclaimed My Power with Michelle Grimes

025 I Reclaimed My Power with Michelle Grimes

In this episode Michelle talks about being reborn after having her confidence stripped,  being humiliated and losing herself all at the cost of trying to fulfil her dream career.  We discuss how even strong women can fall victim to the misogyny of the music industry and the moment she reclaimed her power!

“The misogynistic, the uncaring, revolting behaviour and words that were spoken to us for those two years, I, honest to God was broken. I was not myself. I couldn't sleep outside of panic attacks, literally spiralled into this depression.

I came home, like the most amazing thing I did was performed like 20,000 people in Trafalgar Square with the girls. And we had the best time, and we all said, like we had to call it. Everyone was like, it was getting to the point where it was ridiculous. I was such a positive, loving person all in my life, got to a stage where I couldn't even sleep, I couldn't talk, I couldn't laugh. I was just numb to the world. ”

ABOUT THE GUEST - MICHELLE GRIMES

Irish Pop singer and multi-instrumentalist Michelle Grimes arrived on the scene with a voice, panache and Pop / R’n’B sensibility that instantly set her apart from her musical peers. No stranger to the stage, Michelle has performed in Trafalgar Square to over 20,000 spectators as part of ‘Pride in London’, has sung for the King and Queen of Belgium as well as singing for The Taoiseach and the U.S Presidential party in June last year when they visited Ireland.

Hailing from Limerick, Grimes has emerged as one of the country’s most promising pop acts of recent memory. After the release of her first single ‘Going, Going, Gone’, Hotpress nominated Grimes alongside the likes of Dermot Kennedy and Denise Chaila for Irish artist of the year and one to watch. Michelle’s debut single wowed Irish radio and she went straight onto playlists across the country from Fm104, Live95, LMFM, Corks 96 and C103 as their Select Irish Artist of the Month as well as gracing the airwaves across BBC (Track of the week), 2FM, Spin and many more. Michelle smashed it at the overall International Radio Charts in Ireland landing on the Top 20 most played Artists on Irish radio alongside Ariana, Joel Corry, Dermot Kennedy, Dua Lipa and other stars. The track reached #3 in the breakers charts on Irish radio too.

Episode 9 - Burnout Stage 2: Stop Overcompensating, Start Living

Episode 9 - Burnout Stage 2: Stop Overcompensating, Start Living

Our minds and bodies have the natural ability to respond to stresses and threats to our wellbeing. In psychology, these unconscious responses that help us protect our sense of self are called defense mechanisms

One of the defense mechanisms that gets switched on – especially if we want to make up for our shortcomings or setbacks – is called compensation. And while it may help you achieve goals and excel in some areas of your life, overdoing it may cause more harm than good in the long run.

Especially at times when we feel unseen, unheard, or unappreciated, that’s when our tendency to overcompensate gets triggered. The more that we feel like we don’t matter or we’re not worthy, the more that we want to prove ourselves; and that often leads us to overwork, overcommit, and overthink. These are just some of the “overs” that we need to understand and be mindful of if we want to avoid being overstressed and overwhelmed!

Overcompensation is a bit tricky because it makes you feel like you’re doing your best; but it’s actually counterproductive, especially for high achievers.

In this episode, let’s dive deeper into some of the things we overdo that may cause burnout and ultimately hinder us from giving our best and living life to the fullest.

     Wisdom To Live By:

    • “At the core of everybody, they wanna be seen, heard, and felt like they mattered.  And on the reverse side, all problems come from not being seen, not being heard, and feeling like we don't matter.” – Oprah
    • Success is possible without sacrificing your well-being. Actually, unstoppable success is on the other side of prioritizing yourself. – Becca Powers
    • We shouldn't be just surviving our days. We should be alive. – Becca Powers
    • The more times you say yes to yourself,  the more confident you will become that this is the way to be. – Becca Powers
    • What if you are feeling the “overs”,  what can you do?... Assess and admit that things might be either off track or getting off track. – Becca Powers

Episode 8 - Taking Back Your Power with Gina McCarthy

"And the Day Came When the Risk to Remain Tight In a Bud Was More Painful Than the Risk It Took to Blossom.”

    - Anais Nin -

How would you feel if you started working in a company that accepted you with a yawn? Like when you are excited to start and to make an impact with your efforts and no one seems to really care.

How would you feel working in a company with a culture that undervalues, underappreciated, and underrecognizes people like you?

If this resonates, then listen up and listen good!

This week’s episode features a fellow powerhouse, Gina McCarthy, a resilient soul with a High Achievers mindset with the same badass culture. A crucial career pivot led her to move past her own “unders” that were stirring the dark waters that would lead to burnout - and increased her salary by more than 35% in the process!

Take Inspiration from how Gina took back her own power by:

    • Accepting, loving, and being damn proud of herself
    • Choosing to receive and process outside criticism and comments as either positive, irrelevant, or just simply untrue
    • Allowing herself to feel motivated and inspired again by what she’s doing
    • Avoiding the need to give loyalty to people who don’t reciprocate it
    • Finding her people that would check her a** when she’s being “swallowed up” at work

    Wisdom To Live By:

    • I was comfortable. I was loved. I was respected,  but I just wasn't challenged. - Gina McCarthy
    • I was told that I was too emotionally invested in my customers. And the problem is I allowed it to be an insult when I should have just flicked my chin and said,  “You're damn right I am!” - Gina McCarthy
    • Burnout isn’t abrupt or sudden. It’s a slow drip that bleeds into your system. - Becca Powers
    • You can put whatever the hell you want out and say whatever the hell you want to me. But how I receive and process it is on me. - Gina McCarthy
    • Sitting in mediocrity is a flame killer. - Becca Powers
    • The first layer of burnout is leaving ourselves in situations where we're starting to feel disrespected. - Becca Powers
    • Build your support network because you're gonna need it. - Gina McCarthy

    Know More About Gina:

Gina is a self-made six-figure technology sales executive and mother of two. Gina’s inspirational story starts when she entered the tech industry in 2011 and worked her way up through the various sales ranks. Starting as a business development rep, she is now a top-performing sales executive managing multi-million dollar sales territories. Gina’s willingness to ack

Episode 7 - How to Identify Stage 1 of Burnout: The “Unders”

Episode 7 - How to Identify Stage 1 of Burnout: The “Unders”

I appreciate all that I do. I am good enough just as I am. I speak up for myself, I ask for what I want. I claim my power.

    - Louise Hay -

Burnout is real and will prevail in your life if you keep tolerating it or denying to yourself that you are, in fact, burnt out. We need to rise against the unders of burnout instead of just accepting what should be unacceptable. Now is the time to take action against it so it doesn’t take over our lives.

Developing self-awareness is an essential step in acknowledging burnout. Recognizing and anticipating the first stage of burnout or the unders will help you overcome it. One way to do this is to stop being a people pleaser and start diverting your attention to yourself. You have to believe that you are good enough and you approve of yourself. It’s time to claim your power!

In this episode, Becca sheds light on the first stage of burnout or the unders and how it leads to the next stage. She shares some examples that trigger the unders by providing real-life scenarios. She also helps people evaluate themselves using a rating scale to know if they are not experiencing burnout or if they are getting closer to it. Hence, early detection is the best prevention for burnout.

    Take Inspiration From These Lessons:

    • Burnout is not something that we should power through or tolerate. We should not dwell over burnout all the time, we have to realize that there is a whole big life out there and learn to be alive.
    • There are things to ponder when it comes to what’s working and what’s not working in your life, but you must remember that you deserve to fly high and live your best life.
    • People get into the overs of burnout when they learn how to put the mask on or to show up differently just to get the acceptance and validation that they are seeking.
    • Admitting that you are experiencing burnout is not a sign of weakness, instead, it shows your courage to overcome burnout.
    • When people feel unseen, unheard, and underappreciated, they go into perfectionism to prove they are valuable.

020 When We Work Together, We Rise Together with Linda Coogan Byrne

020 When We Work Together, We Rise Together with Linda Coogan Byrne

In this episode Linda talks about being an activist and campaigner and their courageous fight to change the music industry.  We discuss their Gender Disparity Data Reports that have had a huge impact on the industry and the attempt to silence them by hacking their computer and deleting their whole book!

“I mean, not only that, but we do for those that are yet to come, like, you know. Because if they can't see it, they can't be it. So unless we have visibility and unless we have people being heard  you know, the LGBTQIA community, the black community, people of colour, you know, women.   Unless we are given the same equal opportunity as men.

We're just not, it's going to continue being the same situation where there's one token person on a panel. You know but it can't be like that. Imagine if it was, just imagine if it was the other way around?”

    #25: Me Too Point 0

    #25: Me Too Point 0

There's a silent undercurrent of people, some you know and some you don't, who've been silenced or are silencing themselves around the topic of Vaccine Injuries and Side Effects.

Any other topic would be Championed by Social Justice Warriors. Instead, they've been relegated to their own suffering, unheard and unbelieved.

    This has to change.

018 Music Took The Pain Away with Saskhia Menendez

018 Music Took The Pain Away with Saskhia Menendez

In this episode, Saskhia talks about the struggle of being literally unheard growing up with two deaf parents. Having to adjust when her mum left home and then being put into the care system. She tells me about her decision to sacrifice her true identity for her children’s safe upbringing and how she is now living as her true self and being  an inspiration for other trans women in music!

“And I think, you know, the more people see things and the more people are educated and they see this representation that I talk about, then it changes perceptions of us as a community because we are stigmatised, we are laughed at, we are joked about, we are misunderstood and there's so many different variations now.

You have transvestites, you have transsexuals, you have all different types of non binary, and we're all different. Um, you know, I've actually had full surgery. I actually take hormones. I actually live like this full time.  Like, my passport’s changed, everything about my life is completely different type was before. So I think sometimes people don't know these things, you know, it's not their fault. They just haven't been educated in it.”

ABOUT THE GUEST - SASKHIA MENENDEZ

Saskhia has recently graduated from Tileyard Education, studying International Music Marketing which she has just graduated in with a Distinction.  She is extremely proactive with a strong passion for music creativity, music marketing, branding, artist development, community building, equality, diversity, and the wider creative industries. A self-starter that's highly resilient , and a lady that doesn't get discouraged easily, highly motivated with a great personality and positive can do attitude. She currently manages a dance/ electronic house artist and looking to form the first commercial transgender girlband in the UK.

017 What The Hell Is PMDD? with Jenny Barling

In this episode Jenny talks about being laughed at by GP’s and remaining unheard by a professional from the age of 13 to the age of 38. How suffering with PMDD was hugely debilitating both physically and emotionally and nearly cost her her life.

“So if you said to a man, that you know, every month you are going to be in pain, you're going to not be able to concentrate at work. You might actually have to give up your job and you know, your relationships can break down and that's going to happen to you every month. Or, you know, when you're 50. You know, this is going to happen. That's gonna happen. There would have been research and everything done into this, like a zillion years ago, but the truth is half of the population are women. Yeah. So why are these conditions, Endometriosis, you know, fibroids, PMDD, PMT, Menopause, Peri-menopause, everything should be a huge part because this is people's lives you're playing with. You know, I do say that PMDD is life debilitating and I don't say that lightly because it really is.

And they say that only 5 to 7% of women suffer with PMDD and I think that is utter rubbish.”

ABOUT THE GUEST - JENNY BARLING

Jenny is a confidence coach who has the privilege of making women feel great about themselves, every day. She works on the basis that little tweaks to your mindset and life can empower you to live a life that you desire but most importantly, that you deserve.

Jenny says, ‘The most attractive women in the world are confident women and I believe that every woman deserves to feel amazing in their own skin and mind’.

She has helped hundreds of women find their inner confidence and feel amazing about themselves. Someone once told her that she holds magic in her hands and she now passes that magic on to women all around the world to help them live their lives with true confidence.

016 Let's Talk About PND with Rachel Walker Mason

016 Let's Talk About PND with Rachel Walker Mason

In this episode Rachel talks about being her struggle with post natal depression and putting pressure on herself to pretend everything was fine. We discuss the societal pressures put on new mums to have it all together when in reality hormones and sleep deprivation make it almost impossible and how Rachel helps new mums with PND through her Lyrical Light workshops.

“I think there's something actually wrong.  I'm really, it's not just baby blues already think there's something wrong, because I just felt so ashamed, I thought, oh, it will go, it will be fine. And it took me a really long time and during that time I shot a TV show for sky, made an album, made a music video, which Laila was in, I was a little baby, you know, and did it, did a, a tour and all these kinds of things.

So people thought I was this incredible person having it all together, and I was just not, I was just an absolute wreck behind the themes and my family were almost like too worried to talk to me about it cause they, they could see that I was really fragile and putting on a front of “It's great. It's like, you know, everything's fine, I can pretend.” Yeah, so a lot of them, once I’d eventually talked about it, they said, “Yeah, we knew something was wrong, but we just didn't want to push, push you in case it pushed you away.”

ABOUT THE GUEST - RACHEL WALKER-MASON
