    LESSONS from LEADERS: Egbert Perry

    LESSONS from LEADERS: Egbert Perry

This is the story about how a brilliant builder used  the life  gifts of a stable family upbringing, good education,  and both cultural and business mentorship to do more than just benefit himself.

Egbert Perry L. J. Perry is the dynamic and articulate chair and president of the Integral Group, LLC.  It's described as an Atlanta, GA based  real estate development, advisory, and investment management company.  However, under Perry's leadership the company has created urban environments with livability scales that were unthinkable before he came along.

This podcast allows listeners to hear more than just stories about inner city building projects.  The topics of market permission, the Atlanta Project and the reasons poverty is treated as a crime are examined in ways not usually discussed.

Perry also explains the global housing market from his perspective as the former chair of the $3 trillion organization, FANNIE MAE.

LESSONS from LEADERS is produced as part of the Atlanta Business League's 90th Anniversary celebration.

Political Brokers In India’s Most Marginalized Communities

Political Brokers In India’s Most Marginalized Communities

On this show, we focus a lot on ideological polarization but it’s important to remember that politics is about more than ideology or even policy victories. It’s about distribution and redistribution of goods and services in return for party support, votes. This view of politics is called clientelism, and it often goes overlooked.

One of the landmark papers on clientelism is from Tariq Thatchil, a political scientist at The University of Pennsylvania. It won the award for best paper in the APSR in 2018, and it’s called “How Clients Select Brokers, Competition and Choice in India’s Slums”. Their investigation prompts a re-thinking of the dynamics of clientelism and perhaps even holds some lessons for how to re-think the ideological view of politics as well.

Your Brain on Art | UPenn's Anjan Chatterjee on the neuroscience behind artistic experiences

Your Brain on Art | UPenn's Anjan Chatterjee on the neuroscience behind artistic experiences

"It's not obvious how or why art meets a need. We don't eat it, we don't have sex with it. Yet we are drawn to it and we've been making art since the begining of civilization"

Today's guest is Dr. Anjan Chatterjee, Neurology professor at the University of Pennlysvania. He is a prominent neurologist, former Chief of Neurology at the Pennsylvania Hospital. He is currently the founder and director of the Penn Center for Neuroaesthetics, which studies the neural impact of aesthetic and artistic experiences.

In his book “The Aesthetic Brain: how we evolved to desire beauty and enjoy art”  he makes a compelling case for the intimate links between art and science and their common goal of getting insight into the human experience.

For all his scientific pedigree Anjan also has an artist’s sensibility. He teaches architecture, has a deep love for street art, and he moonlights as a photographer.

In this conversation Anjan and I discussed:

    • how our brain reacts to art and beauty, and how we process and assign meaning.
    • the role of art in human experience and social change.
    • art's potential for becoming an recognized medical treatment.
    • the challenges of scientific research and evidence on a subject so vast and subjective as art.

There’s no way to cover the full extent of these questions in under 40mn but I hope you’ll get enough food for thought!

    Thanks for listening ✨

'Advocating for Those Who Need a Voice' with Dan Treglia & Co-host, Kiran Handa Gaudioso

'Advocating for Those Who Need a Voice' with Dan Treglia & Co-host, Kiran Handa Gaudioso

Welcome to season 2, episode 21 of the Today is the Day Changemakers Podcast.

This week I am joined by my special guest cohost – Kiran Handa Gaudioso, CEO of the United Way of Northern NJ. Together we interview Dan Treglia, Associate Professor of Practice at the University of Pennsylvania, Associate Faculty Director of Penn’s Partnership for Effective Public Administration and Leadership Ethics, and a Senior Research Fellow at United For ALICE. For those who may not know ALICE stands for Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed.

Dan grew up in Staten Island, NY. His parents were both teachers and he shares that their roles shaped his trajectory. They were fearsome advocates for non-traditional and immigrant students that had some tougher challenges.

Dan has dedicated his career to focusing on social policy problems through collaborative and innovative research that engages governments, nonprofits, and people with lived experience, and training students to do the same. His research documents the scope and consequences of income and housing instability and homelessness, and he uses big data and qualitative methods to better understand the macro and micro-level of complex problems and help governments and nonprofits take action.

During the interview Dan gives words of encouragement to those who may not know where they are headed as he has always felt it was a gift that he found his path.

Dan gives an example of the research he recently has been focused on around children who lost a parent or caregiver due to covid19. The research report shows that 167,000 children in the U.S. were personally affected. Listen in to hear more about the report and what is being done to support these children because of this research.

Through his policy work Dan wants to help breakdown structural disadvantages and make sure that everyone is heard.

Next week I am joined by my special guest co-host M. He talks about delivering more than you cost.  Being a fountain instead of a drain. He asks the question what are the things you can control today to add value? We talk about so many important topics including Tourette syndrome. Dave wrote a book about his journey titled, 'Taking the Lead'.
