    Can we end chronic homelessness?

    Can we end chronic homelessness?

It’s estimated that half a million Americans are experiencing homelessness. Even a brief period of housing insecurity can make existing health issues worse, and bring up new physical and mental traumas. Doctors and nurses who help patients navigate these issues have a prescription: More housing, and more services. Is it possible to end chronic homelessness, even as eviction moratoriums end and rents increase? And is a housing-first model the best way to achieve that goal?

    Walk in the Park

    Walk in the Park

We can notice whatever we choose in life, or notice all of it, or none of it. This episode is about paying attention on purpose.  Our minds and lives are more peaceful when focused than when we are distracted by a dozen things.
Noticing nothing is unfortunately what we often do. Walking, chores, or even driving can be done with half attention, doing something but having your mind on something else. The distracted person often hasn’t thought to try to be in the present moment, they are robotic in action, mind disconnected from body.
I's easy to feel unsettled. Looking and listening can help us settle down. It doesn't take away the things that worry or disturb, but it can give some perspective and a lightness to replace the heaviness.

60 Seconds for Wednesdays on Whidbey: The Note in the Mail

60 Seconds for Wednesdays on Whidbey: The Note in the Mail

Hello to you listening in Shutesbury, Massachusetts!

Coming to you from Whidbey Island, Washington this is 60 Seconds from Wednesdays on Whidbey.

I’ve been feeling somewhat low of late, anxious, unsettled, maybe a wee bit fearful. Perhaps it’s our dark weather, some “being in the cross-roads of life” confusion, maybe even Divine Time working off a clock I don’t recognize.

The other day a small envelope - from what appeared to be an elderly woman based on the handwriting - was delivered to my mailbox. I didn’t recognize the return address and my last name was misspelled. Who could this be? Opening the card I read a Scripture-based message (Matthew 10:29-31) along the lines of "G*D watches every sparrow. He will watch you. Have no fear. You are worth more than sparrows. Rest assured that you are watched over with loving concern." In a footnote Berta invited me to check out JW.org if I wanted to learn more.

As Rumi reminds us, there are many ways to kneel and kiss the ground. I will take a blessing as it is offered and thank the Eternal Loving Presence for sending it to me. Who am I to say how Love works?

60 Seconds is your daily dose of hope, imagination, wisdom, stories, practical tips, and general riffing on this and that. This is the place to thrive together. Steven Koonin: Author of Unsettled: What Climate Science Tells Us, What it Doesn’t, and Why It Matters

Steven Koonin is a theoretical physicist who has had a long career in academia, business, and government. In this episode, Koonin talks with Robert about his new book, Unsettled, why he believes efforts to limit debate about climate science are “pernicious,” why he is concerned about the reliability of the electric grid, why he finds the “denier” term abhorrent, and why “we need slow, steady pressure” on our energy and power systems, “not crash decarbonization.”
