Episode 115 - Overcoming an Unplanned Pregnancy & Antenatal Depression with Laila

In this episode, I am chatting to Laila,  a first-time mum who struggled to accept her unplanned pregnancy. She candidly shares with us how difficult it was to come to terms with a positive pregnancy test, and how she handled sharing the news with her close family and friends.

Despite suffering from antenatal depression, Laila went on to make it the best experience of her life so far. After the birth of her daughter she was able to truly see the gift she had been given, and her mission now is to help other women having a baby for the first time.

Laila set up 'The Learning to Mom Podcast' which she explains has a wide variety of pregnancy, birth, and postpartum experts. Her episodes support pregnant women having their first baby to learn more about their options so that they can have a positive experience throughout.

What you might feel if you are surprised by an Unintended Pregnancy: Kekua's Birth Story, Part I

What you might feel if you are surprised by an Unintended Pregnancy: Kekua's Birth Story, Part I

This is a show that shares true experiences of getting pregnant, being pregnant and giving birth to help shift the common cultural narrative away from the rainbows and roses depictions you can find on social media, and other media more broadly, to a more realistic one (which might include rainbows and wreckage?).  It also celebrates the incredible resilience and strength it takes to create another person and deliver them into the world. I’m your host, Paulette Kamenecka. I’m a writer and an economist and the mother of two girls who had far too many surprises on my own path to motherhood.

Today's topic is one that doesn't see much daylight, to the detriment of everyone who has kids: the struggle to manage an unwanted pregnancy. There are any number of ways to respond to an unexpected pregnancy, and in today's show, you'll hear about an uncomfortable but very real response; one that I'm guessing is not uncommon, but is a perspective we rarely hear because the only culturally acceptable response is Joy; you have to be joyous. But that expectation is wildly unrealistic. Having a child is a life changing event, and on the cusp of such an event, any number of reactions can occur. In part one of my conversation, listen to how my guest managed these uncomfortable feelings.

Life is Working For you with Kate Strong.

Life is Working For you with Kate Strong.

Sharing her experiences of growing up in Alabama, going to college at Auburn University, enjoying her youth and eventually getting pregnant. Being a Mormon girl and now getting pregnant was not a part of her plans.

Kate shares vulnerably her story through sexuality, pregnancy, marriage, divorce and her struggles through all of it.

Moving back to Utah was an interesting experience for Kate at a young age as she ended up working as the VP of the Orem Utah institute for the church worldwide. Sitting at the table with some 'high up' people in the mormon church Kate saw more the business side of religion. She witnessed the members being a lot more intellectual than using prayer and heart.

Shortly into her 11 year marriage Kate felt alone, then had a difficult time getting pregnant and having several miscarriages.

After being told to bridle her tongue by her bishop through the end of her marriage, Kate knew she was done with religion and her marriage.

Sharing her tools that she has learned, especially with womb health, is beautiful. You will want to listen to this beautiful story!

I'm a Grandma: My Son & His Girlfriend Are Pregnant!

I'm a Grandma: My Son & His Girlfriend Are Pregnant!

I am going to be a grandma! Yes, you read that right. In March of this year my 19-year-old son told me that he and his girlfriend were pregnant.

“They're too young, not married, not ready, and what on earth will people think???” Strong emotions overwhelmed me, but somehow, I walked around the counter and pulled him into a hug.

So here we are, 9 months into this journey with my son and his girlfriend, and we will meet my grandson this week!!!

On today’s episode, I share about our unexpected journey (x2), the moment he broke the news, and how I’m walking through this now as a parent.

Here are some of the highlights:

    • [00:15] Pregnancy announcement. My son and his girlfriend are pregnant.
    • [01:05] How Tyler broke the news. Happened during an argument, how I felt at first, pulling him into a hug, what I told him.
    • [02:19] The first person his girlfriend told. Friend offered to pay for her abortion, all the voices she wrestled with, what his girlfriend actually wanted to hear.
    • [03:19] My feelings as his mom. Fear and concern, but also hope.
    • [03:33] Advice for the child considering telling a parent. Write a few notes, pick a good time to tell them, some ways to think about their response.
    • [04:30] Welcome. We're not meant to do life alone. Subscribe & stay in touch.

That was on my heart to share this week. See you next time!

    My Story: 19 & Pregnant

    My Story: 19 & Pregnant

Finding out you’re pregnant is not always good news. When I saw those two lines on the pregnancy test, I felt like time stood still. I had my whole life ahead of me. I couldn’t believe I had let this happen.

For this week’s episode, I’ll be sharing my personal story of being 19 and pregnant, and I’ll be getting deep here because I believe in the power of transparency.

But beyond being vulnerable, I hope that my story lets you in on something important. There are not a lot of places where we can have conversations about unexpected pregnancy. So consider this a safe place for us to have those conversations on everything from relationships, jobs, crazy parents, all of it!

Here's where you'll find some of the highlights:

    • [01:07] A little backstory. My childhood, my mom passing away, hanging with the wrong crowd, using hard-core drugs, so a lot of trauma.
    • [02:31] Moving to Massachusetts. Bought my first snow scraper, made some not-so-great friends, got into a relationship.
    • [02:54] Finding out I was pregnant. All the emotions and thoughts, going to an abortion clinic.
    • [04:00] Telling my dad. Our relationship was in a rough spot. This is the phone call I had with him, his response, and what I decided to do.
    • [06:20] To the single moms, birth moms, maybe you've had an abortion, you are not alone.
    • [06:35] Why am I dong this? There's power in vulnerability and community. This is a safe place to talk about it all. A preview of topics to come.

I hope my story encourages you this week!
