George Murray: How a “Weekend Warrior” became the UTA 100 Champion

Kia ora e te whānau. This week Eugene and Matt speak to UTA 100 Champion George Murray. Originally from the South Island town of Blenheim, George has taken a circuitous journey  to be at the beginning of an amazing journey, from his first love of mountain biking, pivoting through to road marathons, then onto the trails. George’s approach to training could be considered unconventional due to his week-on-week-off schedule working in the mines. George talks us through the race, his mindset going in, and the simplicity with which he approached the day, and the result that spoke for itself. Best enjoyed whilst running.

How Using Analytics Helped a Standup Comic Get an Amazon Prime Comedy Special

How Using Analytics Helped a Standup Comic Get an Amazon Prime Comedy Special

META PERFORMANCE SHOW: In this episode, Jason Jaggard has a conversation with comedian Jen Fulwiler about unapologetically chasing what makes you feel alive. After becoming a bestselling author and a host on Sirius XM, all while raising six kids, Jennifer continued to strive towards what lit her blue flame. In this case, it was pursuing a career in standup comedy. Utilizing a tireless work ethic, her broadcast experience, and a whole lot of spreadsheets, she proceeded to do in 12 months what takes most people years: successfully self-produce a live tour, hosting sellout after sellout.

Jen wants us to remember: “Don't ask yourself what the world needs. Ask yourself what makes you come alive, and go do that, because what the world needs is people who have come alive.”

Jen Fulwiler is a standup comic, bestselling author, and mom of six who is currently touring the country with her Minivan Fabulous standup comedy tour. She was the host of the daily talk radio show The Jen Fulwiler Show on the national SiriusXM network, and when she left to launch her own podcast, This Is Jen, it debuted in the iTunes Comedy Top 10. She has been featured on the Today Show and CNN, and her viral social media sketches have racked up millions of views. Her standup comedy special, The Naughty Corner, is out now on Amazon.

Ben St Lawrence - The Boy From Bullaburra

Ben St Lawrence - The Boy From Bullaburra

Kia ora e te whānau. This week, Eugene and Matt have the distinct pleasure of speaking to the legendary Ben St. Lawrence. Ben is one of the greats of Australian distance running, a former Australian record holder of the 10,000 metre distance and Olympic and Commonwealth Games representative for his country. We speak to Ben about his longevity in running, his journey from talented youth, to university party boy, to Olympian. Ben is not shy about the challenges along the way and his struggles with RED-S and what that has taught him.  We break down his most recent victory at the Ultra Trail Australia 50 kilometre race (*spolier alert* EPIC DING-DONG) and discuss his love of coaching, being a co founder of the Sydney based Run Crew. This is an honest, funny, and engaging conversation with an athlete who has continued to search for joy, reflect on the process, and engage in the discipline of this sport we love so much. Enjoy.

Ultra-Trail Australia 2022 - International racing, local wildlife, and heaps of yarns

Ultra-Trail Australia 2022 - International racing, local wildlife, and heaps of yarns

Kia ora e te whānau. This week Eugene and Matt take a sweet as tiki tour into the backblocks when we jump on a waka rererangi (airplane) and head over to the seriously epic and epically beautiful Blue Mountains for the 14th Ultra Trail Australia. In addition to being privileged enough to be part of the commentary team with local boys Ben Berriman and Dave Stewart we got a ton of good running in, became involved with several standoffs with Katoomba’s most aggressive fauna (everything), ran out of superlatives for the utter majesty of the place and generally felt like we were at a trail running summer camp. We’ve got all the race results, run down’s of the days, and  speak to a bunch of runners including women’s 100km winner Anna McKenna. To finish off we speak with Katoomba local Pia Storey, who took on the 50km to raise money for Lifeline after the death of her brother, who had lived with struggle in regards to his mental health. Enjoy.

    Bubble

    Bubble

This week we are covering Bubble and it's exactly what you'd expect. As Jay puts it, it's a classic "girl falls from the sky, connects with dude, saves the world but sacrifices herself, dude is sad but it kinda works out in the end" movie... or something like that. Some may say it's derivative, some may say it furthers the work of it's predecessors. We had a lot to say about this film and some of us had a better time talking about it than watching it, but that's how it always goes on Anime Shmanime!

     SPOILER ALERT!!!
Save this episode for later if you want to experience this show without a high-energy, often heated, very thorough discourse on it's high and low points. We cover each Anime from top to bottom, leaving no stone unturned.

    #014 Scott Richmond | The Mindset Behind A 9 x UTA 100km Ultramarathon Runner

    #014 Scott Richmond | The Mindset Behind A 9 x UTA 100km Ultramarathon Runner

    Hello beautiful people

On today’s podcast we have the beautiful soul Scott Richmond. Scotty is a husband, father of 3, graphic designer, the persona Ozzie on a kids educational YouTube Channel and ultramarathon runner, most notably having finished the UTA, a 100km ultramarathon event in the Blue Mountains, Australia, nine times, having placed as high as 6th and most recently, 7th place.

What I personally love about this podcast is going deeper into the motivation behind Scotty getting into ultramarathon running and particularly why he has participated in the UTA so many times. He shares that it all started to honour the memory and legacy of his little cousin Elliot who passed at the young age of 19-years-old to Motor Neuron Disease; fundraising for MND, Scotty wanted to try something that was well out of his comfort zone, and a 100km ultramarathon was just that, not knowing at the time that it would lead to a long-lasting obsession.

Scotty is a heart on his sleeve kind of guy, and you can really feel into the pain that the loss of a young family member can bring, but also the passion. Scotty values the sentimental aspect of his running, just as much as the competitive, and it is truly beautiful to hear the relationship between these and how it manifests in his high performance.

If you are enjoying this podcast, please rate, review, subscribe, share with friends and family, become part of the To Be Human Collective, and settle in for this conversation with the just genuine all round great guy, Scotty Richmond.
