Ep. 184: Boxer w/ David Vicini

Formed in early October of 1995, Boxer was a Boston-based four piece fast on the rise in the indie scene. With aggressive, heartfelt lyrics Boxer delivered the finest in east-coast punk. They managed to share the stage with acts such as Lagwagon, Weston, Lifetime, Screw 32, Good Riddance, Jimmy Eat World, and Bracket. Their debut and only album, "The Hurt Process," was put out on Vagrant Records as the labels first release. The band broke up soon after that release and Dave and Will went on to form The Lot Six.

Fiddler Records was a small independent record label serving as the launchpad for several artists seminal to the pop, punk and emo genres. Starting as the brainchild of 16-year-old entrepreneur Amy Fleisher Madden in 1996, the label became well known for its early releases from marquee artists Dashboard Confessional and New Found Glory. Over the course of 10 years, Fiddler Records developed a steady roster of successful artists such as The Bled, The Higher, Recover, Juliette & The Licks, Name Taken and Classic Case. You can purchase some of their stuff at www.fiddlerrecords.com

I reached out to Amy last year but due to Covid it took us a while to make this happen. But, I finally got her on the SKYPE and this is what we talk about:

    • Why re-releasing records sometimes doesn’t work
    • how did she fund her first releases
    • What would she document if she could go back in time
    • Did she have other labels to bounce ideas off of?
    • The band Milkshed
    • The reasoning behind The Shortest Distance: A South Florida Compilation
    • why selling band merch now can be a giant pain in the ass
    • Dashboard Confessional
    • the band Recover
    • And a ton more

Emanuel started out as "Emanuel Nice" in December 1998. They kept that moniker until 2004 where they decided to drop the Nice but keep the full line up while updating their sound which would get them signed to Vagrant Records.

They released their first album, Soundtrack to a Headrush, in March 2005 on Vagrant and toured extensively with bands like Jimmy Eat World, Thirty Seconds to Mars, Aiden,  Keating, From Autumn To Ashes, The Bled, My American Heart, Lorene Drive, Moneen, The Audition and many more.

I reconnected with Mr. Matthew Breen, got him on the Skype, and this is what we talked about,

    • Starting the band off as Emanuel “Nice”
    • The Louisville music scene
    • Their song Make Tonight
    • Brian’s bass sound on the record
    • Getting courted by records labels
    • How they signed to Vagrant
    • Their crazy sponsorships
    • How their record getting leaked fucked them
    • Their tour with the Suicide Girls
    • How big did Vagrant think they were going to be
    • The band Recover
    • Black Earth Tiger
    • Getting over addiction
    • And a ton more
