This week we walk through the case of 27-year-old Brian Shaffer who seemingly walked into bar in Columbus, Ohio, only to never walk out or be seen again. When surveillance footage captured Brian entering the bar but never leaving, friends, family, Columbus police, and the FBI questioned how someone could just, vanish. 17 years later and we still have no answer on what happened to Brian.

Episode 4 focuses on the police investigation, their conclusions as to the nature and motive of the double murder and how the circumstances as well as additional testimonies by villagers lead them to four suspects. But as their continuous questioning lead to no confession and lacking convincing evidence, a murder weapon and even the site of the murders, they soon had to admit that they were facing a very complex case that soon proved to be clearly out of their league.

In October of 1888, three articles about strange, unsolved disappearances were published in the San Francisco Examiner. In the first, a slave owner in Alabama vanishes into thin air right before a group of eyewitnesses. In the second, a drunk Englishman takes a bet he can’t run to the next town without stopping and vanishes without a trace after stumbling, nearly falling, but never hitting the ground. And in the third, a sixteen-year-old boy leaves his family’s farmhouse to get some water from the nearby spring and is never seen again—even though his voice is heard on several occasions by his family, crying out from a distance, before growing fainter and fainter over the course of months and eventually fading away entirely.
What these three articles had in common, aside from their mysterious nature, was the name of the author: Ambrose Bierce. Today, the stories are known far and wide and have become practically enmeshed in the DNA of modern paranormal lore—told and retold so many times that they’ve turned into urban legends that entirely ignore their origins. What may not be as well known, however, is the fact that Bierce himself would later become one of the most famous unsolved mysterious disappearances of the 20th century.

Imagine it’s just you and two other people stuck in a single building for weeks on end. Everyone’s bad habits on display. How long would it take you to turn murderous?
That’s just one of the possible questions asked in Emma Stonex’s The Lamplighters. Inspired by the real-world vanishing of the Flannan Isle Lighthouse keepers, but full of incident and weirdness all it’s own, The Lamplighters is equally poetic and paranoid, gentle and cruel, haunting and horrifying. It may be the best thing I’ve read this year.
It will either make you want to move to a lighthouse immediately, or never again set foot anywhere but dry land.
Emma and I talk about the sea, about bad places and lonely buildings, and we come back again and again to the inexhaustible metaphor of the lighthouse.
It all gets very lyrical, but we do also use the word “bonkbuster” at one point, to puncture the profundity.
This is a truly fantastic book, and a great conversation with someone who shares our love for the windswept, memory-stained places of the world.
