In the eleventh episode of Light Talks, the Zumtobel Group podcast, host Diana Panzirsch talks with David Schmidmayr, founder and CEO of Better Plants R&D – an independent research, development and service institute for modern plant cultivation. The topics include plant production under controlled conditions, where technological tools create an appropriate environment to let plants grow healthily and productively using as few resources as possible. In view of climate change, Schmidmayr emphasises the necessity and urgency of alternative ways to produce plants.

The expert subsequently provides interesting insights regarding light and plants, for example how plants react to light – in contrast to human beings – or the effects of changing colour spectra. The challenges and opportunities of controlled production compared with conventional crop production are also discussed. In addition, resource shortages, climate change and the limited availability of soil are addressed and new concepts such as vertical farming projects are explained in detail.

The episode closes with an appeal to contemplate the origin and production of food more consciously in order to counter the challenges of resource scarcity and of climate change together.

10 Gigatons a Year: How Nature-Based Solutions Can Reverse Climate Change

10 Gigatons a Year: How Nature-Based Solutions Can Reverse Climate Change

In this week's episode of the Climate Confident podcast I sat down with Peter Bachmann, the managing director of the Sustainable Infrastructure division at Gresham House, and let me tell you, this conversation is a goldmine for anyone passionate about building a sustainable future. 🌏

First up, we delve into the world of "Habitat Banks." Imagine turning unproductive farmland into biodiversity havens that not only restore nature but also offer financial returns for landowners. Sound impossible? Peter lays down how it's being done, and you're gonna want to hear this. 🌱

Vertical Farms! That's right, we talk about the role they could play in pushing traditional farmland into more sustainable practices. Peter argues that when vertical farming becomes competitive, it will make room for land to be repurposed into these remarkable "Habitat Banks." It's a win-win for the planet and your pocket! 🌾🏢

One of the episode's highlights is the conversation about Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG). You'll learn about the science-backed metrics like eDNA that are turning biodiversity from an abstract concept into a measurable target for companies. Plus, did you know that we could potentially save 10 gigatons of CO2 emissions per year through nature-based solutions? 🌳📊

Peter also tackles the age-old myth that impact means sacrificing returns. Quite the opposite—impact can DRIVE financial gains. Investors, entrepreneurs, and even skeptics will find this incredibly eye-opening. 💰🌿

For a dash of future food talk, Peter gives us a sneak peek into the untapped potential of alternative proteins. From lab-grown meats to plant-based options, this is the future of food we've all been waiting for. 🍔➡️🌱

So what are you waiting for? Hit play and let's dive into these exciting avenues for sustainable change. Or check out the video version of this podcast at https://youtu.be/4K7a-wTkSv8

Until next time, let's keep pushing the envelope for a better world! 💪

P.S. If you're as thrilled about these topics as I am, please share the episode. We need to make sustainability the talk of the town! 🎙️🗞️

Is Vertical Farming Dead? With Sebastien Eckersley-Maslin from Phyllome

In recent years, the vertical farming startup space has been characterized by ecstatic highs and disappointing lows. More than a billion dollars worth of funding has flowed into a relatively small number of investments, but despite this resourcing and years of runway, we’ve started to see frequent, high profile collapses. So, is there a value proposition with vertical farming? Or was it all hype, and time is running out?

Today, we’re joined by Sebastien Eckersley-Maslin, Founder at Phyllome (a Tenacious Ventures portfolio company), to help us tackle these tricky questions.

How About Up? Welcome To The New Age of Farming - Verde Compacto

When was the last time you had a meal? Maybe it was a quick granola bar before work, or possibly you’re eating some lunch right now. Whatever the case may be, I bet you didn’t realize that you were consuming a resource that, in about 40 years, will be as precious as gold. It has been estimated that, in order to keep up with the current population growth, humans will need to produce more food in the next 40 years than in the previous 10,000 years combined. But here’s the kicker. If we increased production by clearing out more agricultural space (like we have in the past), it’s estimated that by 2050, this would create about 2 billion more metric tons of CO2 to be emitted into the atmosphere. So, how do we deal with such an imminent crisis if we don’t even have the space or the resources to do so? Where do we go from here? … Well, how about up? Hello, I am your host Mike Lake and in today’s preview I will be talking with Juan Succar, co-founder and CCO of Verde Compacto, a company designing indoor vertical farms allowing fresh food anywhere, anytime with their revolutionary farm-to-table supply chain.

Mark Doherty, Dual Draft -The Impact of Air Flow in Your Vertical Farm

On our latest episode of Grow Sessions we chat with Mark Doherty, COO of Dual Draft about the benefits of vertical farming and the problems associated with airflow in a cultivation facility in an episode entitled, “The Impact of Air Flow in Your Vertical Farm.”

The passage of air in and over each rack in a vertical farm provides unique obstacles. Poor airflow in a grow room can result in poor quality crops and result in low yields. Air flow also controls other environmental conditions like temperature and humidity.

Join us today for an educational discussion on the benefits of vertical farming and the problems associated with it. Topics in today’s episode include microclimates, drainage issues, understanding HVAC and dehumidification, the importance of choosing your cultivation equipment early in the build out of your facility and how Dual Draft’s integrated airflow solutions can help growers increase profitability and decrease crop loss in their vertical farm. These are just a few of the topics in today's discussion.

If you are a cultivator, owner of a facility or thinking of opening your own cultivation business, you don’t want to miss this episode.
