SBS ep.11: Saudi Arabia’s assault on Yemen, and U.S. involvement in it

SBS ep.11: Saudi Arabia’s assault on Yemen, and U.S. involvement in it

This timely episode focuses on Saudi Arabia's very destructive and now four-year-long war on Yemen, and the direct participation in it of some units of the U.S. military. In early April, the two houses of Congress enacted legislation to end this participation. Pres. Trump vetoed that legislation. Then yesterday, May 2, the Senate held a vote to try to over-ride the veto, and they failed.

The weekly podcasts in this "Story-Backstory" project are all linked to written opinion columns that get published a couple of days earlier… This week’s column ran May 1 on the Mondoweiss website, under the title “A crucial vote on Yemen, aka ‘Saudi Arabia’s Gaza’”.

In this episode, host Helena Cobban discussed Yemen and the Saudi and US roles in the war there with Dr. Sheila Carapico, a Professor of Political Science and International Relations at the University of Richmond who is one of the United States’ foremost experts on Yemen and its relationships with its neighbors. She is also the editor of a 2016 anthology of writings about Yemen and its Arabia-peninsula neighbors titled Arabia Incognita: Dispatches from Yemen and the Gulf, which is available wherever fine books are sold.

Nose to Tail Nutrition with Dr. Paul Saladino

This week’s guest graduated with honors from The College of William and Mary
with a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry in 1999. He then spent 6 years traveling
and exploring the Western United States and New Zealand where he thru-hiked
the 2,700 mile Pacific Crest Trail from Mexico to Canada, explored the New
Zealand backcountry, and spent 2 years skiing and climbing in Wyoming's Teton
Mountains outside of Jackson Hole. This experience was the catalyst for his
interest in performance nutrition & his appreciation for the importance of
connecting with the nature. He then earned his master’s in health science and
physician assistant degree and practiced as a PA in cardiology for 4 years…not
satisfied with the standard of healthcare, he went back to school and earned his
MD degree at the University of Arizona.  While there, he studied with physicians
from the Center for Integrative Medicine, including Dr. Andrew Weil, New York
Times bestselling author and a pioneer of the integrative medicine movement.  In
2018, he completed my training through the Institute for Functional Medicine and
is a certified functional medicine practitioner (IFMCP). With all the free time he
obviously has, he loves to surf, slackline, practice meditation and mindful food
preparation. Welcome to our show, the most interesting man in the world, Dr.

ASEAN Through the Lens of a Human Rights Activist Working Inside ASEAN

ASEAN Through the Lens of a Human Rights Activist Working Inside ASEAN

Although ASEAN has been under fire for its powerlessness in the face of several human rights atrocities such as attacks on Rohingya ethnic minority in Myanmar, internal ASEAN officials, some of whom have lengthy human rights activism experience, remain optimistic that the association can be a force for good. What do they actually see in ASEAN’s non-interference and consensus principles? Why do they keep on appeasing the Myanmar Government while violence raged in Myanmar’s Rakhine State? Why do member states tend to be more closed off in ASEAN forums than in the UN forum? And more questions. Join us for a discussion with the Indonesian Representative of the ASEAN Inter-Governmental Commission of Human Rights (AICHR), Yuyun Wahyuningrum.

    Judy Shepard: Hate Crimes Law

    Judy Shepard: Hate Crimes Law
Ahead of a much-anticipated vote in the Senate, Judy Shepard, whose homosexual son was beaten to death in 1998, talks to NOW about why she believes the government is "giving permission" for people to harass homosexuals. The Matthew Shepard Act, which would expand the coverage of federal hate crimes to include violent attacks against homosexuals, cleared the House in March. If the Senate approves the measure, President Bush is expected to veto the bill. In a web-exclusive audio interview, Shepard talks to Senior Correspondent Maria Hinojosa about the need for expanding the law, and her son's lasting legacy.
