Episode 167: Weekly Shonen Jump Matters...But Why Tho?

This week, we're celebrating Weekly Shonen Jump, the manga magazine that pretty much holds the keys to every one of our shonen favorites and the Toonami generation. With titles from Dragon Ball Z, Naruto, and Yu Yu Hakusho to JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, Haikyuu!, and Death Note, the variety of the series that the magazine has published has showcased shonen's range. With help from special guest LaNeysha from Did You Have To? And So, Here's What Happened, we dive into the impact the magazine has had on pop culture, it's English language counterparts, and the series in ti that we love dearly. And Matt reveals the reason why he isn't a weeb.

Episode 38: Manga Book Club - Spy X Family Vol. 1

Episode 38: Manga Book Club - Spy X Family Vol. 1

In this episode, Kate and LaNeysha kick off their newest segment Manga Book Club with a discussion and review of the action-comedy manga from Shonen Jump, Spy X Family. Published in English by VIZ Media from mangaka Tatsuya Endo, the series follows world-class spy, codename Twilight, on a top-secret mission to “build a family” in order to prevent a war from breaking out. He takes on the persona of Loid Forger to establish a family to infiltrate a prestigious school and get intel on a target. However, while building his family he unknowingly adopts a daughter with telepathic powers and the woman he agrees to be in a fake marriage with is actually a deadly assassin.

This was the perfect manga for Kate and LaNeysha to kick off Manga Book Club. It has everything from great action, good comedy, and an interesting premise this series has instantly become one of their favorite manga of 2020. In this episode, you can listen to the ladies get into their thoughts of Volume 1, their favorite characters, and more.

Episode 36: She Finally Watched The Promised Neverland

If you've been listening to us, then you know that for the longest time Neysha has been trying to get Kate to finish watching the first season of The Promised Neverland. Now, that Kate has watched, this episode is dedicated to breaking down the themes of the series, discussing how Sister Krohn's design is rooted in anti-blackness, and discussing the potential pitfalls that the live-action adaptation will face by aging up the characters.  SPOILER WARNING: This episode contains spoilers for both the anime and manga.

Episode 35: JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Diamond Is Unbreakable Chapter I (2018)

Episode 35: JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Diamond Is Unbreakable Chapter I (2018)

This week, the baddest bitches in anime are back with help from JJBA superfan, Cidnya, from CidnyaReads. In this episode, the trio dive into the live action adaptation of Jojo's Bizarre Adventure Part 4 from VIZ Media and directed by Takashi Miike. In JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Diamond Is Unbreakable Chapter I a teen gifted with supernatural powers, Josuke Higashikata (Kento Yamazaki) discovers evil lurking within his town and mysteries within his bloodline. He learns about the world of stands, his power, and the motives of the evil claiming lives across the town. With insane visuals and even wilder fashion this adaptation is right up Miike's alley. We've now covered four of his films, Blade of the Immortal, Ace Attorney, Yakuza Apocalypse, and now, Jojo.

While we critique and talk about the film itself, we also go in deep on the manga's inspirations, how to watch the long series, and into which boys are best boys in the Jojo world. And don't worry, there's also a lot of our signature thirst.
