    The Language Episode | K-Pod | Ep. 32

    The Language Episode | K-Pod | Ep. 32

Whether you’re a fluent Korean speaker or barely capable of uttering 안녕하세요, this episode is for you! Kicking off our new series on cultural topics, K-Pod pays a visit to Young-mee Yu Cho, Rutgers University Professor of Korean Language and Culture. As co-author of the widely-used textbook series Integrated Korean, Cho has shaped how Korean language is taught in the States today. She dives into all of Catherine and Juliana’s questions, including: What are some Korean words that don’t exist in English? Why is Korean so hard for English speakers to learn? Is Han really the defining characteristic of Korean culture? Should we be spelling 떡볶이 “Dukbokki,” “tteokbokki,” or “teokbokki?” What’s up with the one-syllable names? How has the language changed from the time our parents immigrated? And finally… why are Korean mothers always telling us that we might as well kill ourselves?

Consonants, false vowels and "I have so much more space"

Consonants, false vowels and "I have so much more space"

Gillyanne Kayes and Jeremy Fisher chat about putting their flagship vocal training course fully online for the first time, and describe the amazing content on each day of the course.

And this episode they focus on consonants and false vowels, with an incredibly simple vocal technique to create more resonating space for awkward consonants, allowing you to match resonance more easily while singing words

Discover why Jeremy says there isn't one way to breathe. And the thing you shouldn't do when practising breathing for singing (5.02)

Check out the process for vocal diagnosis that we've been using for years but have only this year shared with our teachers (8.48)

Why we think academia and singing teaching don't really mix (10.23)

Our definition of nasality (we created an entire DVD on voice techniques for nasality) and why it's confused with "forward tone"

And why the Creep Challenge in our episode on ventriloquism sparked an interest in false vowels (and how to make them easier)

They describe how the Pandemic was a positive influence on their teaching, and what it's like to work with a group of people from completely different backgrounds.

Consonants, Ventriloquism, Darci Lynne and Creep

Vocal pedagogue Dr Gillyanne Kayes challenges vocal coach Jeremy Fisher to show how a ventriloquist can sing words clearly.
Using  @Darci Lynne 's excellent Creep video https://youtu.be/KB-390oClpw, Jeremy breaks down the movements needed to sing all the vowels and consonants in the song without moving your lips.
Judge for yourself how well Jeremy does singing the first four lines of the Radiohead song Creep - does he move his lips? Can you follow the instructions and do the same?

    Singer I - Lesson Excerpt (4/20/07)

    Singer I - Lesson Excerpt (4/20/07)

Comment: The important thing to take away from this lesson is that there are no so-called front and back vowels in singing. All vowels are formed in the back. The use of the "oo" vowel here is interesting.

Quote: Vowels are of particular interest throughout training. Tonal impurities are easily detectable there, as well as misconcepts in the area of pronunciation and quality. However, as vowel distortion lies within the functional process as a whole and not within the vowel proper, purification of the vowel without regard for the condition of the registration or the resonance adjustment will be ineffective. A VOWEL WILL ONLY BE AS PURE AS THE COORDINATIVE PROCESS WILL ALLOW. Consequently, work on the vowel must move toward two major functional objectives: 1) it must improve the resonance adjustment, i.e., eliminate constrictor tensions, and 2) it must assist in making changes in the registration, whether it be for purposes of separation or unification. (Voice: Psyche and Soma)

    Singer H - Lesson Excerpt (4/5/07)

    Singer H - Lesson Excerpt (4/5/07)

Comment: This shows the culmination of study for this singer. He now has a singing voice where his tongue can move freely and the changing of vowels is easy.

Quote: Connection of the five basic vowel sounds, "ah," "ay," "ee," "oh," and "oo," on a single tone. The intent here should be to have each successive vowel flow logically out of the position formed by its predecessor while maintaining a solid underscoring of basic resonance. (The Free Voice)

    Singer G - Lesson Excerpt (2/14/07)

    Singer G - Lesson Excerpt (2/14/07)

Comment: Using the oo vowel to get more head voice and a functionally more efficient quality.

Quote: Although the possibilities of vowel manipulation are almost endless, especially when used in conjunction with the principles governing registration, several common and predictable reactions are to e observed: .....4. That the so-called "closed" vowels elicit more head register response; (A Dictionary of Vocal Terminology)

    Singer F - Lesson Excerpt (1/18/07)

    Singer F - Lesson Excerpt (1/18/07)

Comment: Using the ee vowel to find a better ah quality.

Quote: Once the student has learned to gain control over different sounds representing vowel changes he has learned to directly control the involuntary muscular action of the vocal organs. When Tosi warned against singing 'through the nose,' or having the tone 'choked in the throat,' while offering the constructive suggestion that the tone pass 'free and clear' with the vowels 'produced purely,' he implied that the change in vowel quality would establish a more healthful and beneficial physical adjustment of the vocal organs themselves.
