Episode 106: Hear the Dance: Liebeslieder Walzer

Silas Farley is back with another deep dive into the Company's repertory in this week's Hear the Dance episode, devoted to George Balanchine's Liebeslieder Walzer. Farley is joined by former Principal Dancers Bart Cook and Maria Calegari, who share their memories of watching the ballet's iconic interpreters in its initial incarnations; learning individual parts within the challenging but "sublime" work; and coaching Liebeslieder in its entirety. As they describe, the ballet was like a "gift from Europe," for which many dancers have needed to learn the waltz anew—in the countless three-quarter versions Balanchine devised. (57:03)

What's the US role in the Israel-Hamas war? Views from Sen. Chris Murphy & Rep. Mike Waltz

What's the US role in the Israel-Hamas war? Views from Sen. Chris Murphy & Rep. Mike Waltz
Two weeks into Israel's bloody war with Hamas, the death toll continues to mount, and amidst the rubble of bombed-out buildings, one thing seems clear: things are far from over. On the GZERO World podcast, Ian Bremmer asks what role the US government should play in the conflict, and whether that role is as clear-cut today as it was after the attack on October 7. President Biden made a politically and personally dangerous trip to Israel this week, showing solidarity for America’s closest ally in the Middle East. But the administration must walk a fine line between supporting Israel’s right to defend itself and preventing the humanitarian crisis in Gaza from spiraling out of control.

To get the view from both sides of the aisle on Capitol Hill, Ian speaks first with Senator Chris Murphy, the Connecticut Democrat who sits on the Senate Foreign Relations committee, and then with Republican Representative Mike Waltz of Florida, a member of the House Foreign Affairs committee. It's a particularly timely moment to be on Capitol Hill, as House Republicans remain paralyzed over their inability to pick a Speaker. Senator Murphy and Congressman Waltz both comment on what toll that dysfunction is taking on US national security.

Legends Podcast #612; Most Dangerous Game (2020/2)

We’re ending the Most Dangerous Month where it began, with a remake of the 1932 classic based on the 1924 short story reimagined as a TV show released in short episodes on a steaming app in 2020, and then on another streaming service in 2021 when the first streaming service went bankrupt, and finally re-edited as a movie and released on a third streaming service in 2022. Look, we told you this month was dangerous! Longtime listeners will remember Hashtag #QuibiSucks, when we covered the rise and fall of the Jeffrey Katzenberg-backed steaming experiment in short-form television. After Quibi went under, Roku purchased and repurposed many shows from the Quibi library on their platform, including this one starring Liam Hemworth and Christoph Waltz. Now renewed for a second season, Amazon Prime has also released a movie-length compilation of the series - and that’s what we watched, because this a movie podcast. No matter how it started, we’re going to finish it. Most Dangerous Month, Most Dangerous App, Most Dangerous Game!

Episode 71: Hear the Dance: Vienna Waltzes

Episode 71: Hear the Dance: Vienna Waltzes

On the newest Hear the Dance episode, host Jared Angle leads us through the five fasntasy-filled movements of Balanchine’s crowd- and dancer-pleasing Vienna Waltzes. He and Repertory Director Rebecca Krohn share recollections of learning the principal roles in the first Tales from the Vienna Woods and fourth Merry Widow movements from former principal dancer Karin von Aroldingen, describing the strikingly different moods of these two sections and the challenges of their romantic ballgowns. Then, Jared is joined by Principal Dancer Sterling Hyltin, who describes rehearsing the second Voices of Spring and third Explosions Polka movements with former principal dancer Sara “Sally” Leland, and how she has begun to learn the principal role in the final movement following a dreamed premonition, and just in time for her retirement. (58:45)

Episode 121: Our Bosses are Repeatedly Horrible

Have you ever had a terrible, no good, very bad boss? Have you wish ill upon them? Have you ever hired an ex-con for 30 large,...make that, 5 large, to be your murder consultant? If you have thought about it, you may want to watch Horrible Bosses (2011) and Horrible Bosses 2 (2014) rather than risking life in prison.

We love the combo of Bateman, Sudeikis, and Day along the recognizable cast of awful bosses. However, we feel like there was some more meat left on the bone. Come and find out for yourself.

Skąd weźmiemy, pożyczymy w Chinach, zaczniemy się zapożyczać jeszcze gdzie indziej? – mówi Hanna Gronkiewicz-Waltz, była prezes Narodowego Banku Polskiego w podcaście „Druga strona pieniądza”.

Episode 45: See the Music: La Valse

Episode 45: See the Music: La Valse

In this new See the Music episode, host and NYCB Orchestra Music Director Andrew Litton leads us through the history and multi-faceted movements of the music for George Balanchine's La Valse. Choreographed in 1951, the score combines two of Maurice Ravel's compositions: Valses Nobles et Sentimentales and La Valse—a "genius" merging of two interrelated works by Balanchine. Litton is joined by Solo Pianist Alan Moverman, whose piano renditions of excerpts from the score capture its by turns beguiling, bittersweet, and bombastic approaches to the waltz. (26:40)

    Edited by Emilie Silvestri

    Music:
Valses Nobles et Sentimentales (1911, orchestrated 1912) and La Valse (1920) by Maurice Ravel

Episode 41: Bonus: Digital Season Wrap-Up

For this season’s final episode, Artistic Director Jonathon Stafford and Associate Artistic Director Wendy Whelan sat down to reflect on the concluding Digital Season, and to look forward to our return to the stage this fall. From the technical challenges of curating footage to the emotional heights of revisiting these performances, this unprecedented time in the Company’s history has inspired the Artistic team’s ambitious approach to the coming season’s programming, with special repertory revivals, our most diverse cast of choreographers, and the 50th anniversary Stravinsky Festival in the spring to look forward to—and, bridging the two seasons, a final stream of Balanchine’s Vienna Waltzes, a work with special memories for both. Rep. Mike Waltz’s Case Against Ending the War in Afghanistan

Earlier this month President Biden did what three of his predecessors could not: he announced an unconditional end to the war in Afghanistan. On this edition of the GZERO World Podcast, Mike Waltz, a decorated combat veteran and Republican Congressman, tells Ian Bremmer why he thinks that decision spells disaster. "The next 9/11, the next Pulse Night Club, which is right on the edge of my congressional district, the next San Bernardino, that's now on Biden's watch," says Waltz. "He owns it with this decision."
