    Interview with Forester

    Interview with Forester
We had the pleasure of interviewing Forester over Zoom video!

Following up their spring 2022 album, Watercolor, the Los Angeles-based indie electronic duo, Forester (aka David Parris and Xander Carlson) return with the new single “All I Need” on Kygo’s Palm Tree Records.

“All I Need” takes a sharp turn from previous Forester releases, bringing a dose of filtered house and an irresistible chorus sample to the duo’s signature organic electronic production. It’s a summertime hit and then some. The accompanying music video shows the duo performing on an idyllic beach, and as the daylight turns into a picturesque sunset, the video follows a couple through a trippy and passionate dance party in the sand as the song’s lyrics “You Are All I Need” echo behind them.

Inspired by nature and the natural beauty in the world, longtime friends, Parris and Carlson launched the Forester project in 2019 and experienced immediate success with their debut single “Spark” which collected more than 5.8 million streams on Spotify. True to its name, the song was an auspicious beginning that caught the ear of an A&R at Kygo’s Palm Tree Records, where Forester signed in 2020.

The guys further developed the Forester sound, at 8,000 feet, at Carlson’s family cabin in Mammoth Lakes, California, on the eastern slope of the vast Sierra Nevada mountain range.
Musically, Forester fell into a dreamy, achingly emotional, and thoroughly sophisticated, middle ground between the indie folk of Bon Iver – a hero to both Parris and Carlson – and melody-focused electronic giants like Avicii. The music made in the mountains became their 2020 sophomore LP, A Range Of Light. Three albums down, Forester has now amassed over 75 million streams.

A pillar of the project is the preservation of nature that’s inspired them, with the guys donating a portion of the revenue from their first album to The Nature Conservancy, who used it to plant roughly 1,000 trees. Their ultimate goal is for their streaming to be at net zero carbon emissions.

Creator to Creators S3 Ep 38 Shanel Miller

Creator to Creators S3 Ep 38 Shanel Miller
My name is Shanel Miller, I was born in California but have lived all over the country. This gave me the
opportunity to see different perspectives and to find comfort in myself without the consistency of long-
term friendships. I have considered myself an artist since I was a child. My art takes form as paintings,
Ayurveda, Skin Products, Buttons, and Jewelry. My creation is how I express the messages I receive
during dreams and meditations. All of my offerings are driven by a clear understanding of my purpose
    and passion to uplift humanity.
My first income was going to the beach to sale my hand made hemp Macramé Jewelry. This sparked my
drive to make money through my creations at an early age. I love the freedom to explore new art forms
and love experimenting on new modes of expression. Currently I share my art and sarcasm publicly
through my buttons that can be found at www.thebuttonlore.com . I have created over 60,000 buttons
that have sold all over the world, with over 1000 original designs. I supply businesses, events, bands,
artists, and other groups with wholesale custom buttons.
I view health and wellness as an art form as well. It requires intuition, observation, experimentation,
faith, and commitment. This has brought me to embrace Ayurveda as a modality to help others create
wellness plans that fit their unique needs and lives. I also create one of a kind Ayurvedic retreats with
my partner all over the world that focuses on transformational lifestyle change. Our retreats are hosted
globally with upcoming retreats in Mexico, Indonesia, and Sri Lanka. We focus on regulating digestion,
sleep, physical activity, and knowledge to give an immersive experience that allows our guests to benefit
the most from the sacred art of Ayurveda guidance of living in balance. You can learn more about these

Ep 28 - Unlocking Creativity with Tomas Pajdlhauser

I speak with Ottawa-based Tom Pajdlhauser (aka Captain Tom) about his years of work in the animation industry. I ask him about the many responsibilities of an art director, and the hierarchy of workflows involved in the creation of an animated show. We talk about how he sees the relevance of traditional drawing skills in the age of digital art.

But as a career illustrator, what does Tom gain from the practice of urban-sketching? He tells me about a motorcycle trip through SE Asia when he arrived at the intersection of travel and art, and how it changed everything for him. We also share our respective experiences self-publishing books of our art, with reference to Tom's excellent Palestine Sketchbook, and my SneakyArt of Eau Claire.

    Ep 17: Simple Summer

    Ep 17: Simple Summer

Before the episode starts Sondra addresses the killing of George Floyd an the many other men and women that have been wrongfully killed.

A few weeks ago, host Sondra Doty took a pause on her social media accounts and podcast episodes; taking time to listen and learn from black voices. Like the intro states, she started this podcast "to have real everyday conversations that many aren't willing to have." Sondra apologizes for not pointing out or speaking up against past injustices. When she moved to Minneapolis 20 years ago from small town Iowa-from a place with little to no diversity-a whole world opened up to her she never really knew. It's been 20 years of learning, listening, growing, gaining more understand, and realizing where she was wrong. This can be hard and uncomfortable work, but it's important to unpack privilege and bias.

Sondra encourages listeners to do the work, examine their hearts and see where more growth is needed. Word To Your Mothers will be examining how it can aid in doing episodes/work that creates change in the areas of racial equality and justice.

So, we made it to summer, but now what? Not gonna lie, when we started the whole distance learning adventure, summer felt forever away and not here we are a few weeks into it. The reality is there are still many restrictions, posing varying challenges for experiencing summer;...which got host Sondra Doty thinking for episode 17, what would a simple summer look like for her family, and maybe yours too.

Sondra has always tired to keep summer very simple and not over-scheduled, but i's this year's forced simplification doesn't really seem, well, simple. There are many can't-dos: library, zoo, music in the park, pools, T-ball, etc. The list can seem overwhelming and disappointing to say the least.

Here are a few suggestions in the podcast Sondra makes to help with simplifying summer.

Nature walks: This has been a love of her family even before the world turned upside down. So, Sondra still plans on going on mini-adventures with her two boys-going to places familiar and brand new. Her boys have a small nature collection of rocks, sticks and other things gathered from many previous walks. Such walks' benefits are twofold: they provide a natural pause and escape while also unveiling some free keepsakes!

Reading: Personally, Sondra feels like summer is one of the only times she can really dig deep into a book. There is something about reading in the summer-by the lake, outside or on a deck-it just makes her heart happy. Here are two books she is reading now: "Ready To Rise" by Jo Saxton, and "There I am, The Journey From Hopelessness to Healing," by Ruthie Lindsey. For her boys, it's required to do reading before they can watch shows in the summer. This way, they can help build a love for reading and understand it's importance for creative thought and reflection. Sondra and her boys have a rest time in the afternoon, where they grab blankets and spend time reading. the library will be missed this summer, but they'll make it work.

Art: Take a deep breath, it doesn't have to be anything Pinterest-or Estsy-worthy. Just simply drawing, water-coloring or even doing nature art is therapeutic. Buy a little journal for your child to draw on your nature walks! Watercolors are peaceful and a great tool to help a child learn how to sit still. Even, if it's just for a moment. You can buy a simple kit at any art store.

Sondra is sad to think of some of the things they will not be able to enjoy this summer, but she really is trying to look at the more and not the less: More backyard fires, more time running through the sprinkler, more time with family, more conversations, and more of a slower pace of life, perhaps.

So, where can you find the more in the time of less? Let's soak up a simple summer and not worry so much of what our humans are missing. This truly is a time they will remember for the rest of their lives.

Melissa Harris: Visionary Artist Painting the Stories of Women (Ep 31)

Melissa Harris: Visionary Artist Painting the Stories of Women (Ep 31)

What does it mean to be an artist? Is everyone an artist? Melissa Harris combines her background as a clairvoyant with her artistic abilities to create 'Spirit Essence Portraits’. She has created the beautiful card deck 'Creatrix, anything is possible, activation cards', as a tool for women to turn to for comfort, advice and inspiration. Celebrating women’s love of life, beauty, nature and magic with all varieties of paintings from fairies to angels to goddesses to tropical seascapes. Teaching classes combining art and spirituality are among my favorite things to do. Join me in my Woodstock NY studio or travel and paint with me in all sort of exciting exotic, visually and spiritually stimulating locations. The best way to learn more about my life as an artist and intuitive is to read my book “Painting Outside the Lines” – part memoir, and also addresses the questions about the connections between creativity and spirituality that folks have asked of me over time. “Painting is my medicine…Through these decades of a sometimes erratic and ever-evolving life, painting had been the one constant. Relationships and homes have come and gone, but my paint box is always with me.” BFA from Syracuse University in Painting and an MFA in painting from Queens College in the New York City area Fulbright grant to Paris in Painting for Paris in 1985. In 1990 she birthed my publishing company, CREATRIX. At Melissa's website you can see her gallery and purchase her paintings and products along with her books 'Painting Outside the Lines' and '99 Keys to a Creative Life'.
