249 - Facilitators in the Role of Participants – Insights from the NDB Festival 2023

This episode is a special one! You’re invited to time travel back to the NeverDoneBefore Festival, and join me in my virtual podcast boat where I speak to six of our talented facilitators over the 24-hour event: Becky Sawle, Sonja Sinz, Mirjam Leunissen, Célia Rene Corail, Etrit Shkreli and Marianne Oh.

It’s a jam-packed journey, full of rich, multifaceted wisdom; each conversation offers a fascinating and thoughtful perspective, making the next hour and a half an exploration into facilitation as a whole, in its many wondrous forms.

We talk about the balance between structure and emergence, we find unexpected learnings in a Christian Andersen folktale and teachings from a Hindu goddess, we delve into embodiment, trust, costumes, language and neutrality, and how we can support neurodiversity in workshop settings. Phew, it’s a whistle-stop tour!

    Find out about:

    • How costumes can create a safe space to tap into our creativity
    • The balance between structure and emergence that appears through co-creation, and how to navigate the two
    • Why conflict isn’t necessarily a bad thing; when you lean into it, we can strengthen relationships
    • Why as a facilitator, we are the ultimate source of energy, transferring our feelings and emotions to the group
    • How to use embodiment to shift moods, develop new behaviours, and why observing a deeper connection with our body is a journey into self-discovery
    • Why we can draw inspiration from Shiva and Kali in Hindu mythology, to find the balance between presence and action
    • How facilitators can balance diverse needs and preferences to support neurodiversity

When we say we broke Taylor… He really broke. This is a rare sight to see or hear, and we highly recommend not drinking anything if you're prone to it coming out your nose. We talk about the weather, cookies, touching cacti, getting hurt, legos, passion, exaggeration, and so much more! Lol. This one is a fun ride of an hour with us.

25: Bizarre, Strange and Highly Relatable

25: Bizarre, Strange and Highly Relatable

In this house episode, we speak with Concept Bureau strategist Rebecca Johnson about the concept of "weirdness" and brands.

All humans are weird, and brands that are willing to venture into strange and bizarre territories have a chance to connect with their audiences in a deeply emotional way. From Puppy Monkey Baby to the Pet Rock, we analyze brand weirdness's impact on consumer engagement and differentiation.

Weird is risky, but it’s also highly relatable when it’s done right. It can engender a form of trust that brands don’t usually experience with their users, while also signaling a brand’s values and vision.

It’s also a strong force of creativity. Everything new feels weird at first. Instead of shying away, Rebecca talks about how to lean into the odd side of human nature and create something novel.

07: Kettle Logic and Family Secrets: The Uncanny, Part II

07: Kettle Logic and Family Secrets: The Uncanny, Part II

Abby and Patrick return to Freud’s idea of the “uncanny” as an unconventional path to their real target: the unconscious. They talk about the limits of our rationality; “kettle logic” and how it operates; Freud as a “master of suspicion”; narcissistic wounds; family secrets and intergenerational trauma; and the child as the symptom of the parents.

Have you noticed that Freud is back? Got questions about psychoanalysis? Or maybe you’ve traversed the fantasy and lived to tell the tale? Leave us a voicemail! 484 775-0107

#135 Beast Mode Kids - Suits and Weirdness

#135 Beast Mode Kids - Suits and Weirdness

Pat and Alora start the day off talking about an outing that Alora has with some friend and she chose to wear a suit to dinner. From there they went to the mall. The mall was not on the docket until dinner was almost done so Alora was almost nervous to go to the mall in a suit. But guess what, you wear something untraditional you better own it no matter what you do.
That leads to weirdness. Do some people try to be weird? Can you try to hard to be "the weird one".
I don't know, but as long as Alora and Bo own who there are the decisions that they make then I'm a happy dad.
