Brian Downes-Trailblazing Tales: Executive Director John Wayne Birthplace Museum

Brian Downes-Trailblazing Tales: Executive Director John Wayne Birthplace Museum

The Executive Director of the John Wayne Birthplace Museum in Winterset, Iowa, known for producing Buffalo Bill-style Wild West Shows, reminisces about the iconic figures of the old West and reflects on his sentiments towards modern Western movies. After spending a day with "The Duke" at his California home, he shares insights into John Wayne's character, a story about a memorable encounter for a lucky patron at a Utah bar.  Is John Wayne's legacy resonating with the next generation?

Brian recounts his journey from Chicago to Iowa, driven by a lifelong passion for museums, reflected even in his own home's museum-like ambiance. The museum, adorned with a towering 7.5-foot statue of The Duke and featuring three distinct sections, including a 24-seat theater, stands as a testament to Wayne's enduring influence. Brian discusses the museum's aspirations, including acquiring notable items from Wayne's film career.

Learn about the notable celebrities who have graced this historic site, including the very house where John Wayne was born in 1907, earning him the moniker "The Duke" at the tender age of nine. As part of the 2024 birthday festivities, Riders in the Sky will be joining the celebration. Additionally, we delve into other attractions in Winterset, IA, such as the 1876 courthouse and the Bridges of Madison County.

Exploring why John Wayne remains a cultural icon, we ponder whether his legend would endure in today's world and whether he truly epitomized the ultimate cowboy being he was given the Congressional Gold Medal.

Kevin West on being an entrepreneur and his appearance on 1883 - Ketchum's Corner - Episode 1

Kevin West on being an entrepreneur and his appearance on 1883 - Ketchum's Corner - Episode 1

We are extremely excited to launch our very first episode and maiden voyage into the abyss of podcasting and salty conversations with my good friend and cousin, Mr. Kevin West.  Kevin is an Entrepreneur.  He is the founder and owner of 1890 Woodworks near Fort Worth Texas.  We discuss entrepreneurialism with Kevin, how he started his business, the art of woodworking and several of his past and current projects.  Kevin was also an "extra" cast member on the set of the new hit show and Yellowstone prequel from Paramount Plus, 1883 created by Taylor Sheridan.  1883 stars Sam Elliott, Tim McGraw, Faith  Hill, Billy Bob Thornton and many others.  We discuss, in great detail, what it was like day to day on the set of 1883 and all of the behind the scene details of what all is involved in a major production of this size.  These are the details and insight you just won't find anywhere else.

Ep. 54: 'The Harder They Fall' + 'Cowboy Bebop' and the Evolution of the Western

Ep. 54: 'The Harder They Fall' + 'Cowboy Bebop' and the Evolution of the Western

This week, we are discussing the new Netflix original movie 'The Harder They Fall' and the upcoming live-action adaptation of 'Cowboy Bebop.' Both of these properties represent the evolution of the Western in popular culture - from core Hollywood building blocks for actors like John Wayne and Clint Eastwood to being multicultural genre fodder and more. Thank you for listening!

    El Diablo (1990)

    El Diablo (1990)

What the hell is El Diablo, you ask? Why, it's a made-for-HBO film from 1990 co-written by none other than John Carpenter and Tommy Lee Wallace (as well as Christine screenwriter Bill Phillips). And, at least according to us, it's awesome! This week, Chris and Nick check out a largely forgotten chapter in the history of Carpenter's filmmaking career, a hilarious and surprisingly dark comedy/western featuring Anthony Edwards and Louis Gossett, Jr. -- alongside an impressive supporting cast of familiar faces like Joe Pantoliano, Miguel Sandoval, and John "Gremlins 2" Glover. Carpenter might have passed up the chance to direct this one, but it's not hard to catch a glimpse of the humor, energy, and grit of films like Dark Star and Escape from New York in El Diablo's ACE award-winning script. The film is currently streaming on HBO Max, and we think it's well worth a look! Plus, Chris has an amazing experience with the legendary Bruce Campbell, and Nick salutes a YouTube channel that's dedicated to the most obnoxious actor in action movie history.

    On Doing Nothing

    On Doing Nothing

Stan & Josh discuss the Local Church's tendency to slack off of ministry during and because of the COVID pandemic. This episode includes practical ideas and suggestions on how to reengage your community and avoid the "Do Nothing" mindset:

    1. Find a few of the shut-ins, widows, and single moms in your neighborhoods and local communities and care for them. Bring them groceries, make phone calls for encouragement, take care of their lawns at no charge, etc.
    2. Round up some folks who are willing to feed the homeless in your city, town, or your local community.
    3. Pass out bottled water and Gospel tracts at local gas stations.
    4. Visit your local jail and get to know the chaplain or sheriff's chaplain and ask to be put on the regular rotation so that you can encourage the inmates.
    5. Stop by the local rehab centers and ask if you can meet with and regularly disciple some of the men or women in the programs with Scripture and prayers.
    6. Stop by the local mom 'n pop business in your area (auto repair shops, boutiques, restaurants, etc.) and ask to meet the owners. Set up a time to come by during the week and pray for him/her and their business.
