60 Seconds for Time Out Tuesday: What Amazing Idea Did You Overhear Yourself Say?

Hello to you listening in King, North Carolina, The Gateway to the Foothills!

Coming to you from Whidbey Island, Washington this is Stories From Women Who Walk with 60 Seconds for Time Out Tuesday and your host, Diane Wyzga.

Our very own Whidbey Island Poet Laureate, philosopher, and Bard of the Boardroom, David Whyte once said,

Poetry is often the art of overhearing yourself say things you didn't know you knew.

It is a learned skill to force yourself to articulate your life, your present world or your possibilities for the future.

We need that same skill as an art of survival.

We need to overhear the tiny but very consequential things we say that reveal ourselves to ourselves.” [Flying Edna Digital Calendar 2024]

Question? What amazing idea did you overhear yourself say? Now, how might you put your amazing idea into play so you can help others aspire to amazing?

Coming to you from Whidbey Island, Washington this is Stories From Women Who Walk with 60 Seconds for Motivate Your Monday and your host, Diane Wyzga.

Several Christmases ago my brother Paul gave me a copy of his favorite book: The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse by Charlie Mackesy.

It has become my daily habit to select a page from the book to help guide me through my day.

Here is one of my favorites:

Sometimes I think you believe in me more than I do,” said the boy.

You’ll catch up,” said the horse

You feel it, too, don’t you? That same sense that we rely on another’s sturdy hand until we are ready to see and believe what they see and believe in us. We will catch up. We do catch up. And, then we can offer our sturdy hand to another. Because "Each One Lift One!" is how we roll here!

Hello to you listening in Wood Green, London, England!

Coming to you from Whidbey Island, Washington this is Stories From Women Who Walk with 60 Seconds for Thoughts on Thursday and your host, Diane Wyzga.

As the story goes the likelihood of any one of us being conceived is like that of a sea turtle swimming in the ocean and rising to the surface once every one hundred years and putting her head through a loop of seaweed floating there.

Whether Life is chance or destiny we come with purpose. This from Clarissa Pinkola Estes:

    "We do not become healers.

We came as healers. We are.

Some of us are still catching up to what we are.

    We do not become storytellers.

We came as carriers of the stories

we and our ancestors actually lived. We are.

Some of us are still catching up to what we are.

We do not become artists. We came as artists. We are.

Some of us are still catching up to what we are.

We do not become writers.. dancers.. musicians.. helpers.. peacemakers. We came as such. We are.

Some of us are still catching up to what we are.

We do not learn to love in this sense.

    We came as Love.

    We are Love.

Some of us are still catching up to who we truly are."

    - A Simple Prayer for Remembering the Motherlode by Clarissa Pinkola Estes from The Contemplari manuscript ©200

60 Seconds for Motivate Your Monday: What Our Animal Companions Teach Us About Life, Love & Loss

60 Seconds for Motivate Your Monday: What Our Animal Companions Teach Us About Life, Love & Loss

Hello to you listening in Kampala, Uganda!

Coming to you from Whidbey Island, Washington this is Stories From Women Who Walk with 60 Seconds for Motivate Your Monday and your host, Diane Wyzga.

You might notice that I’ll be dipping into the podcast archives to give you something to listen to this week. Why? Because on Friday the 1st of December I had to keep a promise to Gus the Good. Gus was the last of my 4 kitties, 3 of whom came with me to Whidbey Island and have gone on ahead over the Rainbow Bridge.

Gus was a senior fellow. Been with me some 17 years or so since I brought him home from the no-kill pet shelter along with his sister, Kayak. Someone had dumped the litter in a bin outside a convenience store. He’s weathered many changes: losing his mates, moving from household to household, now age and kidney disease.

The thing about Gus is that he took it all in stride. He asked for what he wanted when he wanted it. He snoozed in the sun of an afternoon. The morning was not complete until he got his brushing. I can tell you I’ve curried horses in less time! He figured out how to claim his spot on the bed and the pillow so I had to adjust to him. No matter my mood or attitude he was ready to hand out his personal brand of affection: face licking.

I think the most common thought shared by all of us who have had to make the decision when to let our animal companions go to their final sleep is: I did it too soon or I did it too late. I hear you. My promise to Gus was that I’d walk him to the Rainbow Bridge a little early so that he would not have to suffer. Did I make the right choice? Here’s what our compassionate Whidbey Island house calls vet said: “Better to go on a good day than a bad day.” It was a good day for keeping promises.

So I hope you understand if right now I don’t have what it takes to create a week’s worth of new episodes.

Question: What have your animal companions taught you about life, love and loss?

Hello to you listening in Stalybridge, UK!

And check out this fun video about the most famous service on Britain's railways: the Stockbridge to Stalybridge Parliamentary Train.

Coming to you from Whidbey Island, Washington this is Stories From Women Who Walk with 60 Seconds for Time Out Tuesday and your host, Diane Wyzga.

Sometimes when we are in the thick of it we are hard pressed to make sense of the darkness, the loss, the confusion, the uncertainty. When you are ready the poet Rashani has words you can lean on to help you Begin Anew:

    The Unbroken

    "There is a brokenness

out of which comes the unbroken,

    a shatteredness

out of which blooms the unshatterable.

    There is a sorrow

beyond all grief which leads to joy

    and a fragility

out of whose depths emerges strength.

    There is a hollow space

    too vast for words

through which we pass with each loss,

    out of whose darkness

    we are sanctioned into being.

There is a cry deeper than all sound

whose serrated edges cut the heart

as we break open to the place inside

    which is unbreakable and whole,

while learning to sing."   [Rashani Rea]

Hello to you listening on the Camino de Santiago in Castrojeriz, Spain!

Coming to you from Whidbey Island, Washington this is Stories From Women Who Walk with 60 Seconds for Motivate Your Monday and your host, Diane Wyzga.

Camino means “the way.” Maybe you have been waiting for the invitation to set out on your way. Here it is. Pack what you need. Lace up your boots. Bid farewell to those you leave behind, the ones you hope will be waiting - or, maybe not. Take your best measure of the path ahead. Whether it’s for a day or a year of days, the time is now. Set out. Be glad for it come what may. This time - this way - beckons; if you never go you will never know.

Question: Where are you headed, how come it beckons you, and what do you hope to discover along your way?

Copy of 60 Seconds for Story Prompt Friday: What if You Put Down What You’re Carrying

Hello to you listening in Mandaluyong City, Philippines!

Coming to you from Whidbey Island, Washington this is Stories From Women Who Walk with 60 Seconds (and a bit more ) for Story Prompt Friday and your host, Diane Wyzga.

The other day something pretty rotten happened to me. I felt taken advantage of. How dare she? Who does she think she is? After all I’ve done! My anger and resentment continued long past their shelf life. What happened next? I remembered something.

Perhaps you’re familiar with the story of two Buddhist monks, one older and one younger, walking a dirt road back to their temple. Arriving at a wide river they see a woman standing on the bank unsure of how to cross. She asks for help. Without a word the older monk lifts her in his arms, carries her across the river, sets her gently on the other side and nods farewell.

The younger monk is shocked! An hour of walking, then two, then three, and finally the younger monk explodes in rage: “We took a vow as monks not to touch women! You carried her! You broke the sacred vow!”

As the story goes the older monk says, “Yes, I picked her up, I put her down, and you are still carrying her.”

Story Prompt: What are you carrying around that’s ready to be put down? How would it feel to let it go? Write that story!

Practical Tip: The magic of stories is also in the sharing. If you wish share your story with someone or something.   All that matters is you have a story.

Hello to you listening in Camrose, Alberta, Canada!

Coming to you from Whidbey Island, Washington this is Stories From Women Who Walk with 60 Seconds for Thoughts on Thursday and your host, Diane Wyzga.

He’s making himself known calling from across the house, standing and staring in my office doorway until I notice.

My kitty is a senior fellow. Been with me some 17 years or so since I brought him home from the shelter. Someone had dumped the litter in a bin outside a convenience store. He’s weathered many changes: losing his sister, moving from household to household, now age and kidney disease.

The thing about him is that he asks for what he wants when he wants it. He doesn’t waste a sunny afternoon wondering what I think. He snoozes in a warm space. He’s figured out how to claim his spot on the bed and the pillow so I adjust to him. No matter my mood or attitude he’s there ready to hand out his personal brand of affection.

Question: What if we could live as well? Would we take the chance? Would we risk it all to be so free?

Hello to you listening in Wembley Downs, Australia!

Coming to you from Whidbey Island, Washington this is Stories From Women Who Walk with 60 Seconds for Wednesdays on Whidbey and your host, Diane Wyzga.

My local Sno-Isle library in Freeland has supplied me with books of every size, author and topic for the past 5 years. Inside a book I roam around the world, through destinations near and far, ideas, challenges, cultures, mysteries, thrillers, other lives. I gain perspective, points of view, attitudes, stories, winners, losers, heroines, and dastardly deeds. That is just the beginning. There is something more.

From Alan Bennett’s play, The History Boys: "The best moments in reading are when you come across something—a thought, a feeling, a way of looking at things—which you had thought special and particular to you. Now here it is, set down by someone else, a person you have never met, someone even who is long dead. And it is as if a hand has come out and taken yours."

Question: When has a book reached out and taken your hand? How did it feel? What happened next?

Hello to you listening in Manassas, Virginia!

Coming to you from Whidbey Island, Washington this is Stories From Women Who Walk with 60 Seconds for Time Out Tuesday and your host, Diane Wyzga.

Maybe like me you’ve been so busy with stuff that you defer your happiness - until tomorrow. Maybe you think that the faster you go the quicker you’ll get ahead but actually the behinder you get.

What if we choose to begin anew by slowing our busy lives. What if there was a way to remember to slow down. I have something that might help from the good monastics at Deer Park Monastery where no one hurries but everything gets done:

    Happiness is here and now

    I have dropped my worries

    Nowhere to go

    Nothing to do

    No longer in a hurry.

    Happiness is here and now

    I have dropped my worries

    Somewhere to go

    Something to do

And I don’t need to hurry.

Practical Tip: Give it go. See how it helps you!

Hello to you listening in Freeport, Grand Bahama Island!

Coming to you from Whidbey Island, Washington this is Stories From Women Who Walk with 60 Seconds for Motivate Your Monday with your host, Diane Wyzga.

Call it what you will: abundance; prosperity; good fortune. It doesn’t matter. What matters is that you can choose to decide to invite abundance as a constant in your life, a welcome guest at your table.

A very good way to encourage a mindset of abundance is to imagine it as a warm and friendly energy, maybe a favorite color or cherished fragrance. Imagine that this warm and friendly energy can find its way into your home, your workplace. How? By invitation. It will swirl in through the doors and windows, down the chimney, up from the basement, through the mail slot, enveloping you with hope and imagination.

Pause here a moment to reflect on this warm and friendly energy before offering gratitude for the abundance that graces your life right now. Little by little more abundance will arrive from where it is. Guaranteed!

60 Seconds for Time Out Tuesday: When Will You Be Ready to Leave Your Small River?

60 Seconds for Time Out Tuesday: When Will You Be Ready to Leave Your Small River?

Hello to you listening in Saltburn-by-the-Sea, North Yorkshire, England!

Coming to you from Whidbey Island, Washington this is Stories From Women Who Walk with 60 Seconds for Time Out Tuesday and your host, Diane Wyzga.

The salmon are running here. The ones that left our estuaries as small fry, headed out into the Pacific Ocean and return home a few years later as fully grown adults to spawn, their wild adventure at an end. Like the salmon there have been moments in my life when I risked it all, on a dream, a vision, a hope. My risk-taking ways have rewarded me with chances I could not have taken from the comfort of an armchair. But of late I find myself feeling rusty, maybe drifting in the current, anxious to feel alive in the old way.

I know what calls me. David Whyte’s (our Whidbey Island, Washington poet laureate) poem A Song For the Salmon, gives voice to that deepest longing, to be gone again on a great journey. Perhaps it will call to you...

    A Song For the Salmon

For too many days now I have not written of the sea,

nor the rivers, nor the shifting currents

    we find between the islands.

For too many nights now I have not imagined the salmon

threading the dark streams of reflected stars,

nor have I dreamt of his longing

nor the lithe swing of his tail toward dawn

I have not given myself to the depth to which he goes,

to the cargoes of crystal water, cold with salt,

nor the enormous plains of ocean swaying beneath the moon.

I have not felt the lifted arms of the ocean

opening its white hands on the seashore,

nor the salted wind, whole and healthy

filling the chest with living air.

I have not heard those waves

fallen out of heaven onto earth,

nor the tumult of sound and the satisfaction

of a thousand miles of ocean

giving up its strength on the sand.

But now I have spoken of that great sea,

the ocean of longing shifts through me,

the blessed inner star of navigation

moves in the dark sky above

and I am ready like the young salmon

to leave his river, blessed with hunger

for a great journey on the drawing tide.” [by David Whyte ]

60 Seconds for Wednesdays on Whidbey: What if Your Message Was a Presence, Not Merely a Product?

60 Seconds for Wednesdays on Whidbey: What if Your Message Was a Presence, Not Merely a Product?

Hello to you listening in Port Townsend, Washington!

Coming to you from Whidbey Island, Washington this is Stories From Women Who Walk with 60 Seconds for Wednesdays on Whidbey and your host, Diane Wyzga.

Many folks can string words together and hand you a message or story product. But you’re not a product; you’re a presence. What would it feel like to work with some who invites you to reclaim your presence whether you have a case to win, a story to tell, a keynote to shape, or a vision to sell? We’ll walk the road together with the understanding that you know what you want to say; you just need someone to listen it out of you.

That’s what a story guide does: listens, observes, intuits, validates, breaks complex and complicated thoughts into the clear, concise and compelling heart of the message. Getting to the heart of your message reveals the message of your heart, your presence.

CTA: If you’re curious about getting to the heart of your message and the message of your heart so you are seen, heard, understood, and listened to, contact me on LinkedIn or by email at Quarter Moon Story Arts to schedule a Discovery Chat.

You’re invited: “Come for the stories - stay for the magic!” Speaking of magic, I hope you’ll subscribe, share a nice shout out on your social media or podcast channel of choice, and join us next time! 60 Seconds for Time Out Tuesday: Who Are You if You Are Not I?

60 Seconds for Time Out Tuesday: Who Are You if You Are Not I?

Hello to you listening in Penobscot, Maine!

Coming to you from Whidbey Island, Washington this is Stories From Women Who Walk with 60 Seconds for Time Out Tuesday and your host, Diane Wyzga.

I’ve been curious of late wondering just who is me? Maybe you’re curious about you, too. I can’t answer the question for either of us; but I can offer us something delicious to ponder that might guide us to what we seek.

    I Am Not I

    I am not I.

                      I am this one

walking beside me whom I do not see,

whom at times I manage to visit,

    and whom at other times I forget;

who remains calm and silent while I talk,

and forgives, gently, when I hate,

who walks where I am not,

who will remain standing when I die.

[Juan Ramón Jiménez -  from Lorca and Jiménez: Selected Poems. Beacon Press (1973). Translation copyright © 1973 by Robert Bly.]

Question: Who else might you be when you leave behind “I”?

60 Seconds for Motivate Your Monday: What If You Could Create Powerfully Collaborative Communication?

60 Seconds for Motivate Your Monday: What If You Could Create Powerfully Collaborative Communication?

Hello, to you listening in Laconia, New Hampshire!

Coming to you from Whidbey Island, Washington this is Stories From Women Who Walk with 60 Seconds for Motivate Your Monday and your host, Diane Wyzga.

Maybe this has happened to you. You’re explaining your idea or sharing your thoughts when someone says, “Yes, but” How did you feel? Discounted, defensive, invisible as if they had a better idea or one of greater value.

"Yes, but" communicates judgment. “Yes, but" is heard as negating what’s been said. Even if our intention is not judgmental, the speaker hears “Yes, but” as a critical response.

See what a difference it makes when we change one word to “Yes, and.”  The entire communication dynamic shifts to being seen, heard, included, and valued. "Yes, and" is heard as conveying a willingness to expand upon the speaker’s idea even though we might not necessarily agree with the speaker.

Practical Tip: When we consciously practice eliminating “Yes, but” in favor of the more inclusive “Yes, and” we create powerfully collaborative communication.

60 Seconds for Story Prompt Friday: What if You Could Risk Being Broken for Love?

60 Seconds for Story Prompt Friday: What if You Could Risk Being Broken for Love?

Hello to you listening in Saint-Bruno-de-Montarville, Quebec, Canada!

Coming to you from Whidbey Island, Washington this is Stories From Women Who Walk with 60 Seconds for Story Prompt Friday and your host, Diane Wyzga.

Life will break you. Nobody can protect you from that, and being alone won't either, for solitude will also break you with its yearning. You have to love. You have to feel. It is the reason you are here on earth. You have to risk your heart. You are here to be swallowed up. And when it happens that you are broken, or betrayed, or left, or hurt, or death brushes too near, let yourself sit by an apple tree and listen to the apples falling all around you in heaps, wasting their sweetness. Tell yourself that you tasted as many as you could.” [Louise Erdrich, The Painted Drum]

Story Prompt: Imagine you have been broken. Imagine you have tasted as many of the sweet apples as you could. What did that experience feel like? Write that story!

Practical Tip: The magic of stories is also in the sharing. If you wish share your story with someone or something.   All that matters is you have a story.

You’re invited: “Come for the stories - stay for the magic!” Speaking of magic, I hope you’ll subscribe, share a nice shout out on your social media or podcast channel of choice, and join us next time!
