HILF 40 - Titanic with Ashley Richards

HILF 40 - Titanic with Ashley Richards

Titanic. The infamous passenger ship that struck an iceberg in the North Atlantic in 1912, and slowly sank. About 2,200 people aboard, but only enough lifeboats to hold half of them - and that was if every lifeboat had been filled to capacity... which they weren’t. Whether you’re new to this story or can recite every word of dialogue from the 1997 film,  we’re all getting wet with this one.

Future of Travel: Diving to The Titanic with OceanGate

Melissa welcomes Stockton Rush, founder and CEO of OceanGate Expeditions, to talk about the fascinating cross-section of marine science, history, archeology and opening up the deep sea to travelers.

More than 80 percent of the ocean is unexplored and Stockton is leading the charge to change that statistic. OceanGate is known for their spectacular expeditions to view the wreckage of the legendary Titanic and research the uncharted deep sea.

Plus, as the holiday season gets into full swing, you won’t want to miss this week’s travel hack on how to handle flight cancellations.

    The Ghost(s) of Captain Smith

I've been circling this episode all season and am excited, finally, to bring you the story of Ted Smith (as he was known to those closest to him), the quiet but genial captain of the RMS Titanic. We live with his ghost(s) in so many ways.

‘Still the sea seems strewn’: The Mackay-Bennett and Titanic’s Bodies

‘Still the sea seems strewn’: The Mackay-Bennett and Titanic’s Bodies

I began researching this episode uneasy about what I might find, nervous; and while it is an incredibly somber and sobering part of the Titanic story, I was also shocked at how exhilarated I felt uncovering it, shedding light on the stories of the bodies found, what we can learn from them. Join me as I look at the story of the recovery ship the Mackay Bennett and the process of bringing some Titanic victims back ashore. The Mackay Bennett's fate is tied to Titanic's forever.  Halifax's story is as well. In the rows of graves there we find our grief, their grief, a part of the Titanic narrative that is too often ignored.
