Ep 315: Learning Business Development By Consistently Being Seen Where Your Ideal Clients Are With Lisa Brown

Lisa Brown is a Partner and Wealth Advisor for CI Brightworth, an RIA under the CI Financial umbrella with offices in Georgia and North Carolina that oversees nearly $5 billion in assets under management for over 1,500 households. By digging deeper into an existing firm niche focus of Coca-Cola employees within the organization, Lisa was able to write white papers for these employees that eventually built her expertise and client base within the company and led to referrals and growth from being so visible at the Coca-Cola offices.

Listen in as Lisa shares how she became known as a familiar and trusted financial expert in the Coca-Cola community, how she is now beginning to guide and train the next generation of advisors in the firm on how to become effective business developers, and how she was able to build her confidence and expertise as an advisor. We also discuss how she has been able to prioritize her work so she can regain more family time, as well as why she believes the key to her success now is measured by how much she can help younger advisors build their skills and confidence and find their own path to success.

    Quotes

“[Nobility] is in the service of someone besides yourself or in the service of a cause bigger than yourself.”

“Money matters, and when you make it for other people, that is a big day!”

“If you have disdain for wealthy people, the likelihood of you becoming one of them is pretty small.”

    Takeaways

    Childhood incidents:

Lisa was 14 when she got her first job at Doughnut King and was entrusted with running the store alone. On one Saturday, a group of firefighters purchased all the doughnuts in the store. When the owner returned, Lisa loved the look on his face as he excitedly counted the money in the cash register. This inspired her to begin on her journey of “helping people make money.”

In the middle of third grade, Lisa and her brother enrolled in a Hawaiian school for a month, where they were the only white kids. However, she was “welcomed graciously” and does so to any minority in her life.

Groups you were born into and belonged to:

Lisa was born into a middle-class family and there was a palpable disdain of wealthy people in her neighbourhood. While Lisa’s mother was an atheist, Lisa joined a faith called Unitarian Universalism.

    Temperament and personality influences

Lisa claims she is an extrovert, a storyteller, and a seeker of solutions. With time, she has learnt to become a better listener and be more concise and open-hearted in her communication.

A time I became aware that my way of doing things was cultural and specific to my cultural experience

Lisa comes from a family of “over-talkers” and is used to people speaking over each other at dinner and is intrigued by households different from hers.

Advice to an employer to work with me

Lisa claims that her best clients are those who have valuable offerings for their clients and want to:

    1. Differentiate and stand out in the market
    2. Help their team be laser-like focused on customers
    3. Build a tribe of people who are so emotionally engaged and excited about their job that they think and talk about it with pride

#003: White Papers: A Real and Lucrative Opportunity for Business Writers (Part 2 of 2)
In part two of this two-part episode (check out part one here), I interview one of the most knowledgeable and experienced white paper writers in the business: Gordon Graham. Gordon is the author of the newly released book White Papers for Dummies, a must-read book if you're considering writing white papers — and an invaluable resource if you've been writing white papers for years. White papers have been critically important in my writing career. They gave me a serious income boost when I needed it most (in fact, this is the type of project that first propelled my income to the six-figure level). White papers are also fun to research and write, and they're one of the first types of assignments clients outsource to freelance writers. In this session you'll discover: The three "flavors" of white papers and how to determine which one you need, when. A detailed discussion of each white paper type, including length, tone and how much you can charge as a freelance writer. How to effectively approach a white paper project. Potential pitfalls and landmines to watch out for when writing a white paper. How to keep white paper projects on track and within scope. Dealing with difficult clients and edit-happy reviewers. What a Google executive told Gordon about white paper writers they've worked with (this one's a shocker!). So, you want to write white papers for a living? Here's where (and how) to get started.   And much, much more!
