Boy Meets Girl is an American pop-music duo consisting of keyboardist and vocalist George Merrill and singer Shannon Rubicam. This series follows Carolyn on a comical quest to choreograph the perfect, full-length pairs figure skating routine to Whitney Houston’s 1992 iconic hit song, “I Have Nothing.”  

Motivated by a teenaged obsession for the 1988 Calgary Olympics that also sparked Carolyn’s queer awakening, I HAVE NOTHING begins as a lighthearted nostalgic comedy and quickly morphs into a high-stakes, real-life mission for Carolyn, with a few wild detours along the way. 

At first you think it's just a bit, and then we you realize that it isn't "just" a bit and she's trying to do this for real it becomes all the more intense and hilarious.  With a myriad of figure skating luminaries joining Carolyn on this quest, I Have Nothing is hilarity that is just hard to look away from.

We had the unique pleasure of sitting down with Carolyn in advance of the show releasing on Crave to talk about the origins of the story, sharing this very earnest obsession with the world and so very much more....

You Might Know Her From Mad TV, Scary Movie 4, Dead 7, Over the Hedge, The Christmas Chronicles, Avatar, and as the voice of Daisy Duck. Debra gave us all the intel on working on late night sketch mainstay MadTV, including singing opposite herself, hitting Mariah Carey whistle tones, and rubbing elbows with Oscar winners. Obviously, we got into Debra’s iconic impressions of Whitney Houston and Oprah Winfrey and the unfortunate story behind her departure after eight seasons. All that, plus her instrumental role in developing the Na'vi people and Neytiri in Avatar, living in the “Debra Wilson metaverse” in video games, and acting opposite nearly every boy bander from the aughts. This one was quite a ride!

Once in a great while a movie comes along that makes Jimmy appreciate how good Love Story was. Chris Wuergler does it again with The Bodyguard, part Whitney Houston music video, part Kevin Costner trying to remember how many emotions he knows.

Top trends in news, business and finances are popular topics, but as art reflects life and vice versa, trends in society are often reflected in music. This has been my field for a number of years and I thought it would be interesting to draw some principles from musical styles through the decades as well as trends in society. It’s interesting to turn back the pages of our history to reveal some of the main songs of each decade that reflect thoughts, ideology and even market trends. The political climate, rebellion, rights and new ideas were all reflected in style, lyrics and culture. This in turn affected business. I hope to at least stimulate your thoughts to do your own research.

Love and heartbreak tended to run through every decade as those themes are timeless but starting with the 1950’s we will look at some of the artists and styles that reflected the times and culture. Some songs were a response of the time period but others pushed the envelope of thoughts and ideas. The few songs listed in this article may not have all won top awards, but they all made an impact. Criterion delivers one of the seminal comedies of the 1980s, Denzel Washington wins another Oscar and Peter Sobczynski reveals which film he would be happy to see win an Oscar this year. Francis Ford Coppola finally puts out an authentic cut, Indiana Jones gets an origin story and Dustin Hoffman has an awful time in the dentist chair. A pair of horror classics get their due in 4K and if you missing Rocky Balboa in Creed III, you can now see him a Knockout Collection. For years though, one film has eluded Peter’s grasp and Erik Childress is ready to hear all about his experience with a talking dragon.
