    Community of Believers

    Community of Believers

We all experience the Church differently, but Jesus is clear about the importance of gathering in community. We're called to be unified, bonded in love, patient with each other, and spurring each other on to good works. Our spiritual health depends on our engagement with the Church!

    Eph. 4:1-4 says:

Therefore I, a prisoner for serving the Lord, beg you to lead a life worthy of your calling, for you have been called by God.Always be humble and gentle. Be patient with each other, making allowance for each other’s faults because of your love. Make every effort to keep yourselves united in the Spirit, binding yourselves together with peace. For there is one body and one Spirit, just as you have been called to one glorious hope for the future.

What would it look like if we came humble to our community believers looking for ways that we can contribute to the body of Christ instead of just consuming what it has to offer? Watch this episode of our Spiritual Disciplines Podcast as Matt, Chelsea, and Virgil discussion what it looks like to participate in the local church as a spiritual discipline.

We Are | Disciple Making Disciples

We Are | Disciple Making Disciples
As we continue our sermon series called We Are, we look at Matthew 28 to see what God’s expectations are for us as the church. We are to be disciples, and disciples hear and obey the Word of God as well as worship Him with our lives and priorities. This is to say that we are to read the bible and obey what God’s will is through the scripture. We show our love and devotion by how we prioritize our life and what fruit is coming from our obedience. Jesus tells us that we will be known by our love. We read in scripture as we study that we are to submit to the absolute authority of Jesus and that we are to make disciples in return. Our great commission from Jesus is to take the hope of the good news the gospel to every place near and far. When we trust that God is always with us, we can take comfort that we are being the church, not just attending church. What is your life showing through your priorities? Are you being obedient to His word? Take time this week and pray that God will show you what areas of your life that you are not worshiping Him. Do you have questions about who Jesus is or why being a part of a church is important? Then reach out, we’d love to talk with you, answer any questions, and even pray for you – burnthickory.com/next

2.21.21 - Going to Church XXIII: A Praying Church I

2.21.21 - Going to Church XXIII: A Praying Church I

As we near the end of our sermon series, “Going to Church,” we begin a short “series within a series” and look at prayer in some of its many forms and the way it blesses us as a community. Or rather, the way GOD blesses us in and through our prayers! One of our foci is the variety of flavors prayer comes in, and to illustrate this,  Psalm 147:1-11, Philippians 4:5-7, James 5:13-16, and Matthew 6:7-18 were all read before the sermon.

Are You in the Kingdom or Are You in the Church

Are You in the Kingdom or Are You in the Church
Have you ever taken the time to think about why you come to church? Why do you break your much-needed sleep to get up early, get dressed, get into your car, and go to church every Sunday morning (or for some, one or two Sundays a month)? If not, you should! In today’s message, Dr. Dana Carson, the Kingdom Voice teaches “Are You in the Kingdom or Are You Just in the Church? ” coming from Matthew 16:17-20.

Put Me In, Coach; How the church is like a championship sports team

Put Me In, Coach; How the church is like a championship sports team
Church bashing is all the rage - everyone wants to "follow Jesus" just not be a part of the "church". The only problem with that is, following Jesus MAKES you a part of the church - you don't have a choice. The church is the means by which Jesus chose to change and empower the world and trying to "follow Jesus" apart from the church is like being a suited up and talented football player that has no team to join. You can have great uniforms, be the fastest guy around and have incredible skills but if you are not on a team - you will never get in the game! Listen as we discuss how members of a healthy and effective church are very similar to members of a championship sports team.
