    Fargo (1996)

Brace yourself for a subzero cinematic journey as we explore the wintry wit and suspense of the Coen Brothers' "Fargo." Discover the complexities of Jerry Lundegaard's bumbling crime gone wrong, and how the frigid Minnesota landscape becomes a silent character in this tale of desperation and dark comedy. No guest needed; just you, me, and the quirky universe of a cult classic that defies genre boundaries and continues to freeze audiences in their tracks.

Hold onto your snow hats as we unravel the hilariously tense moment when Jean's quiet knitting is shattered by the intrusion of two bumbling kidnappers. Contrast that with Jerry's own unraveling in corporate meetings, painting a stark picture of a man whose schemes are as slippery as the ice-covered roads his ill-fated plans travel on. The episode's storytelling is as kinetic as a high-speed chase across a snow-blanketed landscape, capturing the chaos of a crime that's as absurd as it is deadly.

Finally, we wrap up snugly, examining the aftermath of a criminal plan skidding out of control. Marge's earnest sleuthing peels away the layers of Jerry's precarious web of lies, leading us to a wood chipper scene that's as gruesome as it is iconic. "Fargo" serves up a frosty reminder that, sometimes, greed leads to nothing but heartache and hilarity. So stoke the fire and join me for a deep dive into the frostbitten soul of this unique film, where the chill in the air is matched only by the warmth of our collective chuckles at human folly.

    Midweek Mention...Pleasantville

    Midweek Mention...Pleasantville

Dan takes us back to a time he remembers fondly, the fabulous 50's and the birth of the boomer generation who single-handedly solve racism in Gary Ross's 1998 fantasy PLEASANTVILLE. I'm being unnecessarily cynical because on the one hand this is an entirely original fantasy with a great concept and unique visual style, a stirring Randy Newman score and beautiful themes about the power of self-expression but on the other it's a movie that seeks to address segregation and racism in a town populated exclusively by white people. Tobey Maguire brings the cow-eyed geek energy of Peter Parker and Reece Witherspoon teaches her mother (Joan Allen) to masturbate so hard she causes a tree to spontaneously combust.

We love to hear from our listeners! By which I mean we tolerate it. If it hasn't been completely destroyed yet you can usually find us on twitter @dads_film, on Facebook Bad Dads Film Review, on email at baddadsjsy@gmail.com or on our website baddadsfilm.com.

    Mystery Men

In this episode Joel and Chris examine the 1999 superhero comedy, Mystery Men, and look at how it manages to parody superhero tropes that barely existed at the time. They also consider the short-lived career of director Kinka Usher, ponder the real life origin of Michael Bay and compare the cast of characters to real life creative types they may or may not know in real life. For the main event, our two intrepid writers consider not only how John Carpenter's The Thing might alter a film like Mystery Men but how it could provide the basis for a potential sequel.

BONUS: A Deep Dive on Felicity Huffman, Lori Loughlin, and Mossimo Giannulli

BONUS: A Deep Dive on Felicity Huffman, Lori Loughlin, and Mossimo Giannulli

How far can a parent go for his/her kid? We’ve realized that we have a little bit of meat left on the old Rick Singer bone and that is why we decided to make a bonus episode! We cover the cases of actresses Felicity Huffman (Desperate Housewives), Lori Laughlin (Full House), and her husband Mossimo Giannulli (Yes, the 90s Mossimo jeans guy). It seemed like these celebrities made some generous “donations” to the Key Worldwide Foundation but in reality, they were paying to get their daughters into top universities. What led them to make those decisions? How did they all end up? Are they part of our beloved fraudsters? Tune in and discover with great details how far these celebs went for their kids!

    TIMESTAMPS

(02:07) - We’re covering one of Hollywood’s scandals in hope that, maybe, we can figure out what led the people involved to make the decisions they did. Let’s start with Felicity Huffman!

(08:40) - Art imitating life? Felicity’s career takes off with Desperate Housewives and her tendency to play the role of the well-intended mother.

(13:37) - Freeze! Felicity is arrested in 2019 for giving $15K to the Key Worldwide Foundation to get her daughter the extra 400 points she needed for her SAT to audition for drama school.

(23:52) - Doing the same scheme next year for her younger daughter, aborting the mission due to Huffman’s guilt which eventually helped her case (in addition to Eva Longoria’s support letter).

(25:40) - Huffman’s lawyers argue that “she was being unfairly persecuted for being rich,” and the sentence she had to face. Also, what happened to Sofia?

(29:46) - Introducing the fraudster couple: Actress Lori Laughlin and fashion designer Mossimo Giannulli.

(38:33) - Let’s focus on Olivia Jade’s story because the scheme in her case is better and, well, more documented: The fake athletes and the sentences her parents had to face.

(45:29) - “I’ve been to one class and I already want to die,” Olivia Jade on USC. Also, we talk with Melissa Korn and Jennifer Levitz about Olivia Jade on the Red Table Talk.

“How the hell did this happen? How the hell did they get Air Force One?”

Welcome back to another presidential and patriotic, terrorist thwarting, and Combat In The Sky episode of THE FILM SNARKS!!

How do you picture the President of the United States of America? Who says the leader of the free world can't kick major terrorist ass?!

That's exactly what President James Marshall (Harrison Ford) does in the 1997 action-thriller, Air Force One, which turns 25 this year, and in doing so, he just might be the best fictional president ever!!

So in honor of President's Day, we honor the most heroic U.S. President in film with a look back at the classic summer blockbuster that is full of slick and tense action that still keeps us on the edge of our seats a quarter of a century later!

Yes, I've got another new co-host for this episode! Join me and my friend Suzy as we talk the romantic comedy and all around sweet film, Benny & Joon (1993).

There are so many aspects of this film that we both hold dear to our childhood hearts.  Again, I'm swooning over Johnny Depp being  Buster Keaton, the incredible amounts of food talk, how I want to LIVE in this house, and we talk about the warm fuzzy feeling we have by the ending.

Off-topic rants include:  climate change, vintage cinema, cheese,  general gossip about actors, court trials

Ep. 7 - The Buchman Draft

Ep. 7 - The Buchman Draft

Sit back and relax as this episode is a reading of the Jurassic Park 3 draft, dated April 12, 2000. Written by Peter Buchman, this isn't the earliest script for the film, but this 50 page draft is extremely interesting. Lots of changes, including an ending that is significantly bigger than what we received in the final film. Yet, there are plenty of similar scenes and characters that were reworked into others.  You can find some of the art for this draft by visiting my instagram page: @StuckOnSorna

    53. Fargo (1996)

    53. Fargo (1996)

(A Ben & Tom episode - prepare for bone dry humour and challenges to the absurd.)

    Are you a Tight Arse?

You will read this, Darn Tootin!

Fargo's desolate space is chock-a-block with larger-than-life characters who inhabited only a tiny space in its baron wasteland but whose words and actions fill the screen.

Our first delve into the Coen brother's universe with an episode that, much like its source material, became filled with many colourful moments and events that left us scratching our heads in disbelief and riving around in despair.

William H Macy as Jerry Lindegaard is up there with one of the best depictions of a downtrodden down on his luck man-baby searching for his big break. This is my deal, YOU SEE!

Always nice to see Steve Buscemi, a man born to have millions of eyes set upon him; he would be wasted behind the counter of your local supermarket. Although many eyes would have seen him daily scanning your toilet paper, so I guess that could have worked as well.

There's no structure to these episode notes, you see; if the one person who reads them hadn't noticed already. Whatever spills out the arse on the day remains on the page. The art of writing is rewriting? Rubbish.

Shoutout to Peter Stormare for owning the bleach blond Grim Reaper look. (Shameless Plug) You can also find Peter hanging out with GameFloggers over at twitch on Until Dawn. Is our Twitch Channel utterly hopeless and on the verge of being binned? OHHH, you betcha, YEAHHHH!
