Wines To Find, Ep 164: Rare Wines and Wine As An Investment

Wines: Broadbent 2020 Branco and a 2019  Domaine Nico Grand Père Pinot Noir

Our guest today is Lars Granat Jensen, CMO of RareWine Invest. RareWine Invest is a Scandinavian company focused on the acquisition and trading of rare wines. They are an associated company of the RareWine Group, a company that houses both RareWine Invest and RareWine Trading, focusing on bringing rare and fine wines to the global market.

Inside the Fort Knox of Wine

Inside the Fort Knox of Wine

Fancy joining us as we break into the Fort Knox of wine?!

It's an old mine and former munitions dump in the middle of the English countryside that now holds over 9 million bottles and £1bn+ of stock. It's one of the biggest such storage facilities in the world and one (whisky) bottle stored there recently sold for £1.2m.

Only downside? Security is tight. And you have to climb up 157 steps to get back out. Good thing Peter was actually invited in - and had a 'sustaining' lunch before the journey back up into the real world (including Cheval Blanc 1949, Krug 1996, Domaine Fourrier Clos St Jacques 2005 and Coche-Dury Meursault Genevrières 2010).

It's quite the adventure: something of a wine pilgrimage, which makes for a fascinating episode diving into professional wine storage, why some wines and people need it, wine investment...and of course an insight into how those very rare and special wines are tasting.

Very much related to the last point, this episode also features the audio treat of Peter trying his best to make sense while the wrong side of multiple delicious glasses and 100 feet under the Wiltshire turf in cavernous tunnels stuffed with millions of bottles of the world's finest wines. It's worth the listen, even if solely for comedy value.

All details from this episode, together with photos to help set the scene, are on our website: Show notes for Wine Blast S4 E2 - Inside the Fort Knox of Wine.

We love to hear from you so please do get in touch via Instagram or Twitter. Or you can star on the show - send us a voice message via Speakpipe.

Either way, thanks for popping in. This show really is for everyone. Cheers to you!

The Bordeaux Appeal: Why Chinese investors are flocking to Bordeaux

The Bordeaux Appeal: Why Chinese investors are flocking to Bordeaux

The Bordeaux wine region of France has always attracted international investment.

As the Asian economy developed, individuals and beverage companies looked abroad to diversify their portfolios.  In the mid 1980’s, Japanese investors like Suntory started to buy Estates in Bordeaux. Over the past decade, it’s estimated that close to 160 Chateaux’s  have shifted hands to Hong Kong and Mainland Chinese investors.

In today’s podcast, we sit down with Howard Kwok to discuss his family’s vision for investing in wineries on the right bank of Bordeaux, and what drew them to Bordeaux in the first place.

Howard Kwok is the co-owner of Vignobles K, a group of vineyards located in Bordeaux, France. Howard's family bought their first vineyard, Chateau Haut Brisson, in 1997, and is the first Chinese investor to acquire a vineyard in France.

Today, their holding company Vignobles K manages 7 properties in the right bank of Bordeaux, including Chateau Bellefont Belcier, a Saint Emilion Grand Cru Classé, and Chateau Tour Saint Christophe, often described as one of the best values of the region. Wines by Vignobles K have received significant praises by professional critics and wine enthusiasts alike, and are widely distributed around the world.

Howard is originally from Hong Kong. After graduating from Harvard Business School, he worked briefly at the management consulting firm McKinsey & Company and joined his family's business in 2015. He splits his time between managing Vignobles K and investments in China.
