    355 - Witchcraft!

    355 - Witchcraft!

Today we do a deep dive on the history of witchcraft. What is witchcraft? How does it differ from organized religion? Why did burning witches ever become a thing, and do witch hunts still occur in the modern world? Why do so many of us have such a strong and irrational fear of people we just don't understand? Going back to some of the earliest written words of Western Civilization, we learn today that a belief in magic and a fear of those who practice it in ways different than we do has fascinated and frightened humans since the very beginning of civilization.  Fear of "the other" led not only to a fear of "witchcraft," but to massive witch hunts, torture, and thousands of people being burned alive. What "others" do we witch hunt today? All of this and more on what immediately became one of my favorite episodes.

    1 Samuel 28-31, Psalm 18 | I See Dead People

    1 Samuel 28-31, Psalm 18 | I See Dead People

Thanks for listening. Please leave us a review HERE.

In these chapters, Saul, the first king of Israel, is faced with impending war against the Philistines. He seeks guidance from God, but receives no answer. In desperation, he visits a medium and asks her to summon the spirit of the prophet Samuel, who had died. Samuel's spirit is summoned and predicts Saul's defeat and death in battle. Saul and his sons are indeed killed in the battle, and the Philistines display their bodies on the wall of a city.

Chapter 28 describes the desperate situation that King Saul finds himself in as he prepares to go to war against the Philistines. Saul is afraid and unsure of what to do, so he seeks guidance from God. However, God remains silent and does not answer Saul's prayers. In his desperation, Saul turns to a medium to summon the spirit of the prophet Samuel. This is significant because it goes against God's commandments to consult with mediums and spiritists (Leviticus 19:31, 20:6).

In  chapter 29, the Philistines prepare for war against Israel. David, who has been living with the Philistines for a time, has been drafted to fight alongside them. However, the Philistine commanders do not trust David and send him back to his camp. As a result, David and his men are spared from having to fight against their own people.

In chapter 30, David and his men return to their home base of Ziklag to find that it has been raided and burned down by the Amalekites. Their families have been taken captive, and David's men are so distraught that they talk of stoning him. David seeks God's guidance and receives assurance that he will be able to rescue their families. David and his men pursue the Amalekites, and with God's help, they are able to defeat them and recover their families and possessions.

Chapter 31 describes the battle between the Israelites and the Philistines. Saul and his sons are among the casualties, and the Philistines decapitate Saul's body and put it on display. The chapter ends on a somber note, with the people of Israel mourning the loss of their king and soldiers.

These chapters depict a series of desperate situations for the characters involved. The chapters also highlight the theme of God's sovereignty, with God's will ultimately prevailing despite the actions of humans.

Psalm 18 is a song of praise and thanksgiving to God for delivering the psalmist, David, from his enemies. David recounts how he called on God for help and was rescued from the hands of his enemies. He describes God as his rock, his fortress, and his deliverer. The psalmist then reflects on God's power and majesty, and how God had helped him overcome his enemies. The psalm ends

    The Witch of Endor

    The Witch of Endor

What happens when we turn our attention away from God?

King Saul had access to God and a promising future before him. Yet humility gave way to arrogance and a dark spirit invaded his soul. Rather than seeking God, he turned his attention to the dark arts in order to conjure up a godly man.  Is it okay to do the right thing the wrong way? Did this work out for Saul?  Let's take a look.

Gotta Have Faith... and Grace! (1 Samuel 30)

Gotta Have Faith... and Grace! (1 Samuel 30)

Faith and Grace.  Two elements crucial for any anointed person in God's Kingdom, whether it's ancient Israel or modern North America.  After summarizing the previous three chapters (plus a communion thought on the God of Life), Chris then explores the contrast between Saul in his lowest point, and David in his.  David finds his strength in His God, expressed in active faith and experienced in active grace.  Find out what David's pursuit of the pesky Amalekites might mean for our faith today.

Big thank you to all who shared their stories!

Plus, wait for a fashion update from Kennedie... after Chris finally stops talking (right Ethan?)!

Seeing & Hearing Someone... From Beyond the Grave! (1 Samuel 28)

Seeing & Hearing Someone... From Beyond the Grave! (1 Samuel 28)

Buckle up, because things are about to get weird in 1 Samuel.  We've got desperate kings, terrified witches, and dead people who talk.  But as Saul uses unlawful means to try to get in touch with YHWH, it only shows how much he has refused to see or hear from his God.  Don't make Saul's mistake.  Don't talk to dead or illegitimate things; inquire of the Living God.  Here's some thoughts on how!

Big thanks to Jelle for his communion thoughts (which connect to Remembrance Day and our sermon passage) and Dave for his music leadership (which coincidentally references the exact verse for the sermon).

Also, Kennedie offers an impromptu COVID update!

    1 Samuel 26-28 - Audio

    1 Samuel 26-28 - Audio
In 1 Samuel 26-28, we find David being given the chance to take Saul's life, but instead sparing him to prove that he has done nothing to wrong him. After proving this to Saul, David is invited to come and live in Israel once again, but he chooses not to trust Saul, and instead stays with the enemy. As enemy troops are coming against Israel, Saul isn't hearing from God anymore, so he goes to a spiritist to bring up the spirit of Samuel. Samuel tells him that he has a done a sinful thing is bringing him up, and that both Saul and his sons will be killed the next day in battle.
