    A Conversation with Stanley Hauerwas

    A Conversation with Stanley Hauerwas

Stanley Hauerwas. Do we need to say more? The man is the preeminent living American theologian and has formed and shaped Christian thought and practice for decades. Stanley is a gift to the Church, and we loved chatting with him. We talked about sola scriptura, Kierkegaard, pacifism, how to be a Christian in America today, and much more. The audio for this episode is not to our regular standard. We apologize for that, and hope you can hang in there. It's worth it when we're talking to a treasure like Stanley.

The books mentioned in this episode are:

    • Hannah's Child - Stanley Hauerwas
    • Prayers Plainly Spoken - Stanley Hauerwas
    • Unleashing the Scripture: Freeing the Bible from Captivity to America - Stanley Hauerwas

The Difficulty of Understanding Others with Constantine Sandis

The Difficulty of Understanding Others with Constantine Sandis

It seems more than ever that our present era is one of misunderstanding others—their motives, their reasons, their practices, and their beliefs. Is there a quick remedy to this, such as being more objective? Is objectivity even possible, especially given how incomplete our knowledge of others is? Constantine Sandis (University of Hertfordshire, UK) is Professor of Philosophy, with a special interest in ethics, action, and understanding others. He discusses the importance of shared practices and has some surprising thoughts about the role of empathy.

    S1 E36: Metaphysics

    S1 E36: Metaphysics

Mark and Adam are here to talk about metaphysics, but man, are they angry about it! In this episode, they break down the various approaches to metaphysics in the Modern Era, from Schopenhauer's Idealism, the concept of teleology, to Peirce's triadic system. Even though they are not as entertained by metaphysics as they are by many other topics, they will discuss it all the same!  Follow us on Twitter! @UlmtdOpinions

    S1 E35: Epistemology

    S1 E35: Epistemology

The best epistemology chapter yet! In this episode, Mark and Adam heavily agree with a lot of what is being said about the philosophical approaches to knowledge in the Modern Era. John Henry Newman and Ludwig Wittgenstein are highlights with their respective opinions on the role of reason and the grounds for doubt. They also break down Peirce's scientific method, Frege's beliefs on logic, and Bertrand Russell's knowledge by acquaintance and description.  Follow us on Twitter! @UlmtdOpinions

    S1 E34: Language

    S1 E34: Language

Adam's favorite topic: language! In this episode, Mark and Adam break down the various philosophical opinions on language in the Early Modern Era of philosophy. They discuss Frege's sense and reference, Russell's theory of description, an Wittgenstein's picture theory, language-games, and private language. Well, they discuss these topics for about half the episode. The second half is all about the use of language in our current political climate and how important it is to keep language open and to always do your research.

    Rudolf Taschner: Fortschritt (Teil 1)

    Rudolf Taschner: Fortschritt (Teil 1)
