Making Your Own Luck with Cleveland Guardian’s Assistant Director for Player Development Jen Wolf

Making Your Own Luck with Cleveland Guardian’s Assistant Director for Player Development Jen Wolf

On today’s episode, I’m talking to the Cleveland Guardian’s Assistant Director for Player Development, Jen Wolf, about making your own luck.

Jen currently works with the Guardians where she’s taking a holistic approach to player development. She’s spent her whole career in baseball, previously working with the New York Mets and Washington Nationals as well as in the Commissioner’s office. It all started when Jen was in high school, working at a bagel shop where the GM of the Red Sox was a regular. She took a chance and told him she was interested in working in baseball and began an internship before college. Jen has built her career by making the most of every opportunity presented to her and setting up the conditions for success.

    We talk about:

    • Taking advantage of jobs we might not be excited about as opportunities to learn new skills
    • Finding a job that allows us to take on the projects that we’re passionate about full-time rather than on top of our other roles
    • How women and non-binary people can use their networks to understand if a workplace is really as inclusive as it claims

Ep. 106 - Baseball Rebels w/ Professor Peter Dreier

Ep. 106 - Baseball Rebels w/ Professor Peter Dreier

This week Professor Peter Dreier (Occidental College) joins Hooks & Runs to discuss his new book, "Baseball Rebels: The Players, People and Social Movements That Shook Up the Game and Changed America" (Univ. Nebraska Press, 2022), co-authored with Prof. Robert Elias. The conversation covers not only well known names in baseball history like Bill Veeck and Larry Doby but also little known players almost forgotten by history. You'll hear amazing stories about people like Octavius Catto, Sam Nahem, Jackie Mitchell and more. This is a highly recommended book.

Dreier and Elias, incidentally, also released a companion book, "Major League Rebels: Baseball Battles Over Workers' Rights and American Empire" (Rowman & Littlefield, 2022).

"Previously on Hooks & Runs" - Professor Jeremi Duru on Curt Flood (Ep. 104).

    Check It Out:
    Prof. Dreier
recommends The History Channel's documentary, "After Jackie"
Rex recommends the new single from Megadeth, "We'll Be Back."
Andrew recommends "Operation Mincemeat," starring Colin Firth and available on Netflix.
Craig recommends the new album from a reunited Porcupine Tree, "Closure/Continuation." This is "Of the New Day."

Be Your Own Storyteller with Reno Aces' General Manager Emily Jaenson

Be Your Own Storyteller with Reno Aces' General Manager Emily Jaenson

On today’s episode, I’m talking with Emily Jaenson, the General Manager of the Reno Aces, a AAA Minor League Baseball team associated with the Arizona Diamondbacks.

When Emily was hired as the Aces’ GM, she was the first woman GM in Minor League Baseball in 20 years. It’s a fitting position for a woman who first learned how to score baseball games at 5 years old with her mom. Like most of our guests, Emily did not have a straight-line journey in sports to get to her current position. She started off thinking she’d go into athletic training and then pivoted into marketing. Her first job was in ticket sales with the Chicago Bulls. And through several twists and turns, including leaving sports for the non-profit world, she continued to learn and grow along the way, and consistently worked to be so good that no one could forget her. That work paid off and ultimately earned her the GM position. And now she’s using her position to help support other women in sports through her podcast and her work in Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in baseball.

    We talk about:

    • Being the storyteller of your own journey
    • Choosing opportunity and growth instead of comfort
    • How having it all is possible because it is also self-determined
