Taylor Draughn, a licensed professional counselor, and Marriage and Family Therapist and Pat Domangue  look at the story of Rachel from Genesis 29-31 and discuss the points of healing and encouragement we discover for our lives today. In today’s episode of All God’s Women we meet a Daughter of Abraham, a woman who came faithfully to the synagogue, despite her ailment, and received unexpected healing as a result.

For eighteen years this woman had stared at the ground, unable to stand face to face with those around her. For eighteen years she’d not been able to look into someone’s eyes and have them look back into hers. 

Imagine the feelings that must have flowed through her as she stood for the first time and saw Jesus face to face, looking into her eyes with more compassion and love than anything she’d ever experienced before. All that suffering was worth it in order to experience that moment together.

After Sarah died, Abraham decided it was time for Isaac to marry. Only he didn’t want Isaac to marry a Canaanite woman neither did he want him to return to their homeland. He insisted that a woman from their kindred be brought to Canaan to be Isaac’s wife. So Abraham sent his trusted servant on a mission to find a suitable wife for his son.

We’ve had several months of feel-good stories, of women in desperate situations who were redeemed by the love and mercy of Jesus. Today’s story is not so pretty. We look at Herodias, a vile woman consumed with power and prestige, willing to go down whatever slippery slope it took to get what she wanted.

We find Herodias mentioned in Matthew 14, Mark 6, and Luke 3. The gospel writers spent as little time as possible on her story, only mentioning her as a flashback or side note to explain what happened to John the Baptist. 

So who was Herodias? She was the granddaughter of Herod the Great. He was the Herod who had all the baby boys killed when he heard from the wise men that a king had been born in Bethlehem. As he aged, he grew more crazed and murdered his wife and three of his sons. 

This was the family she was born into.
