HILF 19: Lesbians with Rachel Scanlon (Recorded LIVE)

HILF 19: Lesbians with Rachel Scanlon (Recorded LIVE)

About 40 people joined Dawn and special guest, Rachel Scanlon in The Glendale Room for a night of comedy, history and Lesbians!

Not included in the recording, was the first part of the live show which featured stand-up comedy from Ryan Ripple [Guest from 'THE F WORD - EP. 6 &7] and Rachel Scanlon. We learned a lot about Rachel during her set, including that she has hit some impressive weight-loss milestones over the past year.

Listeners join the live audience as Dawn and Rachel sit down together on a lush love-seat, surrounded by books and prepare themselves for the HILF-ing ahead:

    ---EPISODE BREAKDOWN---

00:04:00 - Dawn brings everyone up to speed on how the two first met - and why it felt like love at first sight. Rachel tells us about a recent adventure she had with her mom - during which they ate cannabis and talked about sex! Dawn discusses her relationship with homosexuality, and when she realized she was straight.

00:13:14 - Dawn lays out her plan for the HILF-ing of Lesbians: to begin with the first historical reference and then a few of her favorite moments that bring us right up to today.

00:14:04 - CHAPTER ONE: The OG Lesbian, Sappho of Lesbos.

We hear the tale of this ancient, Pagen poetess who was world-famous but whose sexuality was only a 'big deal' long after her death. A string of leaders within the growing Christian movement aspired to burn Sappho and all of her poetry from the historical record. They largely succeeded, unfortunately, a few poems and a few portions of other poems have survived. Dawn reads a brief portion of one and it gets steamy!

00:25:18 - CHAPTER TWO: The Lesbian Sex Wars.

Dawn brings us forward in time several hundred years to America in 1970's and the midst of the Civil Rights Movement. As several varying groups of minorities are organizing and fighting for freedom and representation, a bizarre rift developed among the Women's Right's Movement. On the one side were the Radical Feminists like Catharine A MacKinnon and Andrea Dworkin who are anti-porn and anti-kink. On the other, a group of BDSM-leather-loving women who called themselves the Lesbian Sex Mafia. They squared off in 1982 at the Barnard College Conference on Sexuality... I know, to be a fly on the wall, right

00:38:04 - CHAPTER THREE: Dykes on Bikes.

After some 'cunt-a-linquistics' of the origin of the word 'dyke' Dawn tells the story of how the famous motorcycle club, Dykes on Bikes came to be. It, like leather and motorcycle culture among men, grew out of World War 2 and the individuals who found themselves on the forefront of the mechanics and technology of these relatively new machines.

In 2006 the motorcycle club known as Dykes on Bikes won their suit against the US Patent Office which refused the registration of their trademark due to a "slur" in the title. They successfully argued that 'Dyke' is not a slur - and if it is regarded so, it is not held as such within the community. They later assisted an Asian-American band called 'Tan and the Slants' win their case in 2017.

Women's Choice is More Than Roe vs Wade

Women's Choice is More Than Roe vs Wade

In 2022, the U.S. Supreme Court could overturn Roe v Wade, imperiling all women’s freedoms, and creating a new pipeline to prison for the vulnerable just as the world is learning how counterproductive most incarceration - solutions are. Today’s guests argue that things could have been very different. If the white dominated “choice” movement had paid closer attention to all women’s choices, or lack thereof; If anti-violence advocates had rejected criminalization and incarceration as a solution to the violence in women’s lives. Things could have been different, our guests argue, if a different part of the US women’s movement had gained more attention - attention it is beginning to get now. There has always been such a movement, they know, because they were there. Today we talk to Black abolitionist feminist Beth Richie and Queer southern feminist Suzanne Pharr have worked together, for abolition, feminism, and a systemicly different world for forty years.  What have they learned? And what is their message for us now, when so much hangs in the balance?

    Guests:

Suzanne Pharr, Co-founder, Southerners on New Ground. Author, Transformation: Toward a People’s Democracy

Beth Richie, Director, Institute for Research on Race & Public Policy, University of Illinois at Chicago. Author, Compelled to Crime: the Gender Entrapment of Black Battered Women & Abolition. Feminism. Now.

Encore: How Shah Rukh Khan Inspires Female Empowerment

Encore: How Shah Rukh Khan Inspires Female Empowerment

Due to scheduling conflicts, there is no new episode of Grand Tamasha this week. A new episode of Grand Tamasha will air next Tuesday at 9:00 PM EST/Wednesday 7:30 AM IST.

Most of our listeners do not need an introduction to the Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan. You’ve watched his movies. You’ve sung the songs his films have popularized. You might even have had his poster on your wall growing up.

A new book by the economist Shrayana BhattacharyaDesperately Seeking Shah Rukh: India's Lonely Young Women and the Search for Intimacy and Independence, describes another role that Shah Rukh has fulfilled: he has been the north star for women across India as they search for intimacy, independence, and empowerment.

Shrayana joins Milan on the podcast to discuss her new book—which is part economics tract, part reportage, part social commentary, and part feminist call to arms. Milan and Shrayana discuss how Shah Rukh has become a female (but not feminist) icon, the economics behind the lack of women’s agency in India, and her own struggles with love and loneliness. Plus, the two discuss the mysteries of the Delhi social scene and the ways government policy can help challenge conservative, patriarchal social norms.

Imagining a World Linked with Empowered Women - EP 008

Imagining a World Linked with Empowered Women - EP 008

Gloria Steinem transforms herself into a true heroine. Gloria teaches women to imagine a world linked and not ranked. Her story shows women how to transform themselves for the better.

In this episode, Gloria Steinem is the featured Everyday Heroine from the movie ‘The Glorias’ and the book ‘My Life On the Road’ by Gloria Steinem.

Gloria transforms herself by leading the women’s movement. She takes her unique point of view from traveling and informs the world. Gloria combined her life experiences and her writing skills into something powerful. She fought hard to empower women around the world.

In the movie, The Glorias, you begin to see her childhood influences from her loving but eccentric father. Then, you see the struggle for survival as she takes care of her mother by herself. Next, you see Gloria's heartbreak after learning about her mother’s crushed dream. She ultimately makes her mother proud by writing an article of her own.

A young adult Gloria takes offensive behavior from men and turns it into fuel for empowering women. She then turns those offensives into a non-violent movement. She doesn’t let the oppressive nature of the working world stop her own transformation. Gloria overcomes obstacles like a transformed woman.

Finally, Gloria positions herself to create what she wants in the world. She brings supportive women together for a common goal. That goal becomes unstoppable once she is with like-minded women.

The four versions of Gloria illustrate amazing transformation in one woman’s lifetime:

    • Little Girl Gloria gains inspiration from a loving but eccentric father
    • Older Girl Gloria transforms her destiny from dancer to writer
    • Adult Gloria sustains heavy insults while learning to overcome obstacles
    • Older Gloria fulfills her destiny while moving a country toward change

Information presented in this episode was sourced from the movie ‘The Glorias’ and the book ‘My Life On the Road’ by Gloria Steinem. Visit Gloria Steinem's website here.

Amping Up Massive Connections from Hidden Figures - EP 007

Amping Up Massive Connections from Hidden Figures - EP 007

Inspiring women in our nation’s history make massive connections from Hidden Figures. Learn how an everyday life story from childhood turns into a wildly comforting act of storytelling. Margot Lee Shetterly takes a chat with her Dad and a reaction from her husband and turns it into a box office hit. As a result, the rising stars in the world of science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) are powerfully motivated by this movie.

In this episode, Hidden Figures are the featured Everyday Heroines from the storytelling efforts of Margot Lee Shetterly.

At the beginning of this episode, the assumption starts with the idea that you have seen the movie ‘Hidden Figures.’ With some curiosity, the purpose is to discover what makes this movie so popular and what factors may have contributed to its success.

First, discover the four women considered to be leaders during the timeframe of ‘Colored Computers’ at NASA in the late 1950s – 1960s. The four women were Dorothy Vaughan, Mary Jackson, Katherine Johnson, and Christine Darden. Christine presents her leadership in books with the same title.

Next, you are presented with some complimentary information and perspectives about the President of the USA, the Olympics, and the women’s movement. These various points of view help the listener to understand how everything and everyone is related in life. One act inspires another act that turns into an unstoppable force for change.

Stories from the movie reflect real-life events. These stories find massive connections from 'Hidden Figures' viewers. Going a step further, we become more aware that the whole world continues to battle the same behaviors. This calls into question the reality of progress over the decades.

An added perspective uncovers the underlying facts that make this movie so influential. Comparing the current reviews between this movie and another recently popular movie speaks volumes for its true popularity. Find more reviews here for ‘Hidden Figures’ and ‘Captain Marvel.’

The White House Hidden Figures Event shares more commentary here. President Obama awards Katherine Johnson the Medal of Freedom

Statistical data makes the information compelling for the advancement of women in the Olympics. The Chicago Tribune details a timeline that also supports improvement. Pulling these together, a synergy forms between womanly acts of courage.

Growing a community one town hall at a time 💰 Claire Wasserman, Ladies Get Paid

Growing a community one town hall at a time 💰 Claire Wasserman, Ladies Get Paid

“The email that I would receive after every single town hall was, ‘I thought I was the only one.’” - Claire Wasserman

By 2016, Claire Wasserman was fed up with men not taking her seriously in the workplace. For years, she’d internalized this marginalization as somehow her fault or her problem to struggle through alone. It was time for that to change.

With a friend, Claire brought together 100 women in a town-hall style event to talk about money and power in the workplace. Out of those conversations, Claire saw the potential for something much bigger.

After that first town hall, she created a Slack group which grew to 6,000 women in the first year. Half a year later, that Slack group had more than 20,000 members from all 50 states. Claire quit her job, incorporated a business, and hit the road hosting town halls around the country.

Today, Ladies Get Paid has helped more than 75,000 women believe in and advocate for their worth, including a young Alexandra Ocasio-Cortez. Town hall discussions, conferences, workshops, webinars and more took place across the country before the pandemic, and those sessions have transformed into webinars and more since COVID arrived.

How did Claire get such a massive community and business off the ground? Tune in for the full story.

    Highlights, inspiration, & key learnings:

    • Can’t fake the funk. Why this work matters to Claire.
    • Origin story. In 2016, Claire hosted a town hall in NYC offering an intimate and vulnerable space to talk about money.
    • Town halls. Claire’s tour across America and learning the dynamics of different cities.
    • Moderation. Creating community guidelines and an ecosystem where there is no need for moderation.
    • Writing the “Ladies Get Paid” book. Centering the book around stories of real women.
    • Lawsuit. How Ladies Get Paid was sued and lobbied elected officials to change laws.

The Economy of the Internal and the External

The Economy of the Internal and the External
Capitalism is an expansive system: if it is to remain stable, it must continually incorporate new milieus and spheres of life, new social and natural spaces of economic exploitation. But what happens with this “external” element when it becomes an “internal” one? How does it change? And how does it change capitalism in return? | Center for Advanced Studies LMU: 20.01.2016 | Speakers: Prof. Dr. Manuela Boatcă, Prof. Nivedita Menon, Ph.D. | Moderation: Prof. Dr. Christoph Knill
