    JD TALKIN SPORTS #1153

The refs blew a huge #facemask call on #dallasgoedert last night.  So they can review the fumble but not the penalty?  @philadelphiaeagles fans have a right to be pissed.  I was livid.  That and #quezwatkins getting stripped after a 50 yard catch.  #ballsecurity is preached everywhere in the #nfl and no more unbeaten teams so the 1972 @miamidolphins can crack open the champagne. Goedert is going to be out awhile with a shoulder injury.
@rams #cooperkupp going on IR after ankle surgery so will miss at least four games. @nygiants only a game back of Eagles in NFC East.
@nyjets huge divisional game @patriots #afceast there for the taking.
@nyknicks had a players only meeting last night. Huge five game road trip.
@njdevils going for 10th straight win tonight @canadiensmtl go for it. @yankees fans #anthonyrizzo back for at least two years.  Will he get #aaronjudge to join him?  @yankeesrecaps what do to think?  Judge looking at his last and first real payday.  Going to be very interesting.

    Smokey Things and Santa Hats

    Smokey Things and Santa Hats

NCiB is 100% Boosted! A photo of Pottymouth’s Twins BF pick, Mitch Garver, drinking a beer while wearing his baby in a sling, has us waxing nostalgic and digging for similar photos from our own collections, while Brent Rooker’s Twitter feed is like a visit to the pop culture aisle in Patti’s brain. Showing her excellent judgment, Pottymouth sticks with Juan Soto as her forever BF when we get to the Nationals, while Patti goes hard against type with end of season breakout star Lane Thomas, son of a professional drag racer.

Yasiel Puig and WFT owner Daniel Snyder lead us to cross-train with sexual abuse/harrassment cover-ups. The Mets hope that Buck Showalter, older than dirt in baseball years, will bring some stability. Congrats to some of our favorite women in baseball, Paloma Benach, named a captain of her high school baseball team, and Justine Segal, back to Mexico to coach in the LMP, and to run baseball clinics for girls. Hard to tell if Pottymouth is more excited about women’s baseball returning to Japan, former BF Ildelmaro Vargas breaking the LVBP record for hits in consecutive games by a Venezuelan and signing a minor league contract with the Cubs, or her Leones playoff chances in LIDOM. One final bit of cross training as we look at the impact of COVID on both the NHL and NFL.

We say drag queens, 420, “that hair stays in town,” and use “Max Scherzer” as a verb.

    Vulgarity, Desperation, and Shots

    Vulgarity, Desperation, and Shots

Fueled by local distilleries and breweries, Patti and the Pottymouth present their new boyfriend selections from the Rangers and the Pirates, with a bonus of Pottymouth sharing her research strategy tips (hint: it involves googling the word “scandal”). Please welcome Adolis Garcia (made us say “ARod”), Corey Seager (also made us say “ARod”), Ke’Bryan Hayes (we want to have a beer with his dad), and Roberto Pérez (we want to have a beer with his mom). We propose a science project involving the rate at which Clint Frazier’s hair grows. The Hall of Fame  makes us happy with their new class from the “Early Baseball” and “Golden Days” Era, especially Minnie Miñoso.

The lockout means the only news is Minor League news - contracts for Dee Gordon-Strange and others, the minor league Rule 5 draft, and Endeavor buying up teams and forcing Patti to say the phrase “holding company”  in a baseball podcast. The Fenway Sports Group joins us in crosstraining with hockey by putting in a bid to buy the Pittsburgh Penguins. Yasiel Puig signs to play in the Korean league. The LIDOM regular season winds up this week and gets us the bonus vocabulary phrase “fi fla.” Idelmaro Vargas is tearing it up in LVBP, which goes until 12/16.

We say aguardiente, professional bull riding, and fluffy haired folk.

VOTE, and also, Why do the White Sox Hate Fun?

VOTE, and also, Why do the White Sox Hate Fun?

They must, right? Or else why would a team full of talented, enthusiastic, exciting, and outspoken players hire Tony “unwritten rules” LaRussa? The 76 year old white guy called out Tatis Jrs’ grand slam, allowed that protests against racial injustice are okay as long as they are “sincere,” and claims not to have a racist bone in his body.  Yeah, we rant again.  And really, are there only three candidates qualified in the whole world of baseball for the three open managerial positions?  Way to grow the game, MLB. We have some words for the Tigers hiring of A.J. Hinch, and some Alex Cora musings.

We throw some belated appreciation Corey Seager’s way, and give Jon Lester the NCiB seal of approval for buying the first beer for each fan at a whole slew of Chicago bars if they say to put it on Jon’s tab.  It has to be Miller Lite though so we are not all in on this. Yasiel Puig, man. Just about when you win us over, an assault allegation comes to light, dating back to Dodger days. The Mets have a new owner with a big fat wallet, and we like how he’s spending it on staff and small businesses.  Let’s see what happens with free agents.

Now that MLB’s season is over, they’ve washed their hands of any COVID testing and follow up responsibility so we may never know the result of Justing Turner’s mask-free World Series on-field celebration.  There are a wide range of predictions on what the official consequences will be -- the collateral damage is a lot of disappointment from long-time fans. In other COVID news, the powers that be are looking to next season and perhaps staggering the minor-league training and season schedule to accommodate distancing and safety protocols.  Which minor leaguers will have no say in because they DON’T HAVE A UNION. The hot stove is upon us so we catch you up on contract options, non-tendering of players, and what to watch for in free agency offers.

Our good friend, Clive Hsu, English-language CPBL commentator for Eleven Sports, joins us to talk about the Taiwan Series. Two games into the best of seven championship, Pottymouth’s Lions and Clive’s pick, the Brothers, are tied at one game each. There’s some thoughtful analysis, some predictions, and some wagering (Pottymouth offers to sing, Clive and Patti want her to get a tattoo). Don’t forget to check Pottymouth’s guide to Winter Baseball once the CPBL wraps up.

In our new studio! MLB, Cordero trade, umpires opting out, Padres roster, Bonds, Clemens, Sosa, McGwire, Rose, and the best shortstops of all time.

In today's episode we discuss the Padres trade of Franchy Cordero and what it means to the Padres roster.  Also, we cover whether or not Bonds, Clemens, Sosa, McGwire, and Rose should be admitted into the baseball Hall of Fame, as well as discussing who is the greatest shortstop of all time.

Should we be concerned about Indians closer Brad Hand?

Should we be concerned about Indians closer Brad Hand?

In his last three games, Cleveland Indians closer Brad Hand has allowed five runs and eight hits in three innings. As the Indians continue to push for the playoffs, is it time to be concerned about Hand's effectiveness?

Before we get there on this week's Leading Off with Ryan Lewis podcast, we cover these topics:

    - The Indians are coming off their toughest stretch of games this season, winning a series against the Twins, losing a series to the Red Sox and splitting a series with the Yankees. Ryan gives his thoughts on how the team played over the stretch and what we learned about the team, especially when it was without Yasiel Puig in the middle of the batting order.

    - Corey Kluber suffered a setback in his latest rehab start, exiting the game after an inning due to an abdominal strain. What does this mean for his comeback? And if Kluber does return to the Indians this season, which starter is at risk of losing his spot in the rotation?

    - Carlos Carrasco is also starting to work his way back. We explain that while it's a great story, be hesitant with your expectations for the starter.

    - More with Hand: We wondered, do the scars of Indians closers past taint the public opinion of Hand?

    - Ryan explains the pitch that Hand has faltered on, and what could be the cause of his recent struggles.

First impressions of a beefed up Indians offense

First impressions of a beefed up Indians offense

Between recordings of the Leading Off with Ryan Lewis podcast the Cleveland went and pulled off a blockbuster trade. The team shipped starting pitcher Trevor Bauer out and brought in power hitters Yasiel Puig and Franmil Reyes, along with several other players.

On this week's Leading Off, we talk about the trade and how Puig and Reyes are helping beef up the Indians' offense. We also talk about how it's taking some of the pressure off Franicsco Lindor and Carlos Santana.

This week we also discuss two of Cleveland's young starting pitchers, Shane Bieber and Aaron Civale. Both 2016 draftees, they're showing off Cleveland's ability to draft and develop starters as questions remain about Corey Kluber and Carlos Carrasco. They also exist plenty of Danny Salazar, who struggled in his first start in the majors in two years.

Bieber is obviously a big part of Cleveland's success this season. In fact, the All-Star might be one of the most valuable players in baseball when you consider his contract. Can Civale become a similar type of player for the Tribe? We talk about it this week.

Yasiel Puig (McCullough) & Tiger Woods (Farmer)

Yasiel Puig (McCullough) & Tiger Woods (Farmer)

Host Beto Duran welcomes Andy McCullough and Sam Farmer to discuss two athletes who attract a lot of attention - Yasiel Puig and Tiger Woods. Puig returns to Los Angeles this week after his off-season trade to the Cincinnati Reds. McCullough explored the effect Puig had on his former Dodger teammates in a story released this past Sunday. Andy discusses how he approached his story, what was important in the coverage, and what he thinks the story is lacking. Puig's return to LA including a late arrival and a home run off Dodgers ace Clayton Kershaw, thus helping craft the narrative that so many fans are tuning in to witness. Farmer was in Augusta covering the Masters golf tournament, and was in the right place at the right time as Tiger Woods return to glory happened this past weekend. Sam reveals the intricate oddities which make the Masters unique and discusses some of the amazing stories that he uncovered while there. Chairs, media technology, restrictions, and legendary caddies add to the tale of Tiger clawing back into the forefront of the golf world.
