Now, video clips of Afghans desperately clinging to the wheel-wells of an American C-17 plane will forever be associated with the Taliban’s conquest of Kabul, Afghanistan’s capital. Over the coming weeks thousands could be evacuated. Western countries are making commitments about how many refugees they will take, though the details remain hazy. The Taliban meanwhile insist that they have “no plans to take revenge on anyone” and thus that flight is unnecessary. Four decades of conflict have led many Afghans to flee the country, mostly to its neighbours. The UN counts 2.5m registered refugees; the true number is probably much higher. Despite their promises, some European politicians are worried about a mass exodus, recalling the nativist backlash after the arrival of 1m Syrian refugees in 2015.
