#77: Yoga Instructor vs. Yoga Teacher

#77: Yoga Instructor vs. Yoga Teacher

Yoga is not just what happens on the mat in a gym, but yoga is meant to be a life journey.

    In this episode, you'll learn:

    • What a Yoga Instructor is
    • What a Yoga Teacher is
    • Why they are different
    • How to know which one is right for you

If you're looking to learn yoga, get clear on what your intention is for seeking out a yoga practice or class.   Knowing the difference between a yoga teacher and instructor is a big part of cultivating the self-discovery journey you want to take and how you intend to use the practice in your life.

Yoga is often one of the first elements that draws people in to beginning to understand and transform themselves even though it may not be the actual reason they think they need yoga.  You might come to yoga seeking to touch your toes and end up changing your life instead.

Ep 5: Respecting Yogic Ancestry - Cultural Appropriation, Chakras, and Healing from Trauma with Generational Yogi, Khushbu Vyas

Ep 5: Respecting Yogic Ancestry - Cultural Appropriation, Chakras, and Healing from Trauma with Generational Yogi, Khushbu Vyas

Yoga is a practice that is enjoyed and embraced by people worldwide and while its popularity has exponentially grown, it's not always respected and honoured. As an Indian cultural practice, it can be challenging for those without an Eastern heritage to fully appreciate and/or observe it.  Those who teach it, especially in contemporary contexts, are often well-meaning, but parts of yogic ancestry is often cherry picked to serve a Western palate and whether it or not intentional - this is cultural appropriation and it's damaging.

In this episode we're joined by generational yogi, Khushbu Vyas, who helps to bridge the gap between these ancient yogic practices and Western science. She shares the benefits of yoga and yoga nidra for healing with trauma, drawing from new knowledge based on growing scientific evidence. We also unpack:

    • The brainwave frequencies and their association with yoga nidra / yogic sleep
    • The chakra system in the context of the nervous system
    • Harmful examples of cultural appropriation in yoga in the wellness industry
    • How to be more respectful of yogic ancestry

Khushbu is a social justice attorney based in New York, but as a generational yogi she educates people about yoga, chakras and has a yoga nidra podcast. Find out more about Khushbu through her business Aatma Life or on Instagram @aatmalife.
