Book of Joe: Astros win the World Series, Dusty Baker Legacy, Phillies Fall, and WS Soundtracks

The Book of Joe Podcast begins with the Astros closing out a World Series win. Hosts Tom Verducci and World Series Champion Joe Maddon discuss Houston being one of the best teams all season.  Yordan Alvarez was really impressive all season and the pitching came through in all aspects.  With the amount of strikeouts the Astros pitching got, it didn't leave many balls in play for a defense that was still spectacular.  Joe thinks this win will push teams, especially in the AL West, to try and create a hitting lineup that can move the ball around the field.  Dusty Baker finally gets his World Series championship after 25 years of managing.  Dusty has had the right demeanor to last so long in the game and had the perfect mentality to calm the situation and bring credibility back to Houston. As for the game itself, Tom was surprised to see the Phillies mood just tank when they were down.  We find out the one pivotal moment that changed the outcome. The 118th World Series was entertaining and both teams represented the game well.  We wrap up with music heard in Baker's office through the series.  Joe thinks the season should end with ZZ Top and 'Sharp Dressed Man' for Baker's upcoming offseason.

We start this week's episode in the cheeriest of moods following Yordan Alvarez's dramatic walk-off home run to give Houston a 1-0 lead in the best of five Divisional Series with Seattle. From there we contemplate whether home field advantage any big advantage at all in baseball, meditate over how much if at all the 5-days rest will effect the four teams that earned byes, and gravitate to the recent Right Said Fred vs. Beyoncé  kerfuffle.

    Check It Out
Craig - John Fullbright's new album "Liar." This is "Unlocked Doors."
Rex - Cobra Spell's new single "Flaming Heart."
Andrew - Paramore's new single "This is Why."

Errata: The Padres, not the Phillies won more games on the road than at home in 2022, after adding in the Wild Card round results. The NFL blackout rule has been suspended (not overturned) since 2015. Vanilla Ice released "Ice Ice Baby" in August 1990, which technically is the last year of the 1980's in a way.  Beyoncé's self titled LP was nominated for a Grammy Best Album in 2014, not "Lemonade," which came next.

    Mariners Schadenfreude / Schneider's Future

    Mariners Schadenfreude / Schneider's Future

Jeff and Kevin start off the show reacting to Yordan Álvarez’ walk-off home run off of Robbie Ray in Game 1 of Houston & Seattle’s divisional series, before getting into why Scott Servais decided to use Robbie Ray out of the bullpen. Afterwards, the guys look back on Ross Atkins’ end-of-season news conference and discuss why ultimately, they both believe John Schneider will be back as manager of the Blue Jays in 2023. Sportsnet’s Joe Siddall shares his takeaways from Atkins’ availability and day one of the 2022 division series, notably Cal Quantrill’s start against the Yankees, Dodgers-Padres West coast showdown, and his breakdown of the Ray-Álvarez at-bat (33:50).

Astros Sign Alvarez, Ides of June Upon Mets, Girardi and Maddon Sacked!

Astros Sign Alvarez, Ides of June Upon Mets, Girardi and Maddon Sacked!
Hosted by Paul C. Cuthbert and Tab Bamford. Welcome to June, where All-Star ballots are available and managers start getting fired. After discussing the nice, new deal Houston gave Yordan Álvarez and the impressive improvement from Seattle's stud rookie Julio Rodríguez, the guys spent some time on the two major league managers who filed for unemployment in the last week. On our previous show, the Phillies were The Bad because of their brutal stretch of play and Joe Girardi being on the hot seat. Well, Girardi got canned and the Phils haven't lost since. So we tip our cap to them as this week's The Good. The Bad this week is the Angels, who let Joe Maddon go after losing 12 straight games (now 14). Things are bad in Anaheim, but - as we said last week with the Phillies - is it the manager's fault or the roster he's been given that doesn't work? And what will they do for a permanent manager in both Philadelphia and Los Angeles of Anaheim? Stay tuned for this week's LDR Fantasy Add of the Week. Follow everywhere @linedriveradio.

    OPENING DAY IS ALMOST HERE!
The Yippers are absolutely juiced that the marathon of 162 is about to begin!

Intro: Eloy Jimenez injury devastates Brett and Fur, but will it be a big enough blow to stunt a playoff run? The Chicago Cubs have not extended Rizzo, Bryant or Baez, what is going on in the North Side? Finally, the guys make their MLB playoff brackets, from wild card winners to  World Series Champs!

This week's interview is a "HOT TAKES" edition, featuring our very own 2020 Spoon of the Year Winner Paul Hembekides! Paul is the producer behind ESPN's successful morning show GET UP! Paul took home our 2020 Spoon of the Year award for his notorious article portraying how Christian Yelich was the best player in baseball entering the 2020 season (Titled & linked below: Christian Yelich, not Mike Trout, is MLB's best player -- and the numbers show it)
To continue the hot take tradition, Paul was gracious enough to come up with a few additional hot takes for the 2021 season. If you are betting man like ourselves, this episode is a MUST LISTEN,  hear and place your MLB futures before the start of the season! Thanks again for coming on the show Paul!

Outro: The Yippers have fun giving their own hot takes for the 2021 season in honor of the legend Paul Hembekides's special feature. Also, the boys touch on their MLB fantasy draft, who we drafted with the #4 overall pick and more!

    Make Atlanta Hammers Happen

    Make Atlanta Hammers Happen

Now is the time, Atlanta. Honor Hank Aaron and eliminate your problematic baseball team name in one fell swoop. Hammerin’ Hank deserves it.  Kiké Hernandez and George Springer highlight the hot stove this week. The Mets fire Jared Porter for his abusive treatment of a female sports journalist (dick pics and out of control unsolicited texting). Good on ya, Steve Cohen, but next time include some women in your vetting and you can avoid the bad hire to begin with. Jessica Mendoza gives excellent context. We crosstrain with professional hockey in which the women act to end racism and the men just can’t follow health protocols.

We tiptoe back to the Astros in our boyfriend segment where Pottymouth selects Winter Ball favorite Jose Siri and Patti hopes for a comeback for 2019 Rookie of the Year Yordan Alvarez. Over in Milwaukee (dammit, Packers) Pottymouth chooses Luis Urías as her Brewers boyfriend, watching for the moment when his hamate-surgery induced superpowers kick in.  Patti hopes for a comeback for 2018 MVP and her current once and forever boyfriend, Christian Yelich.  There’s a boyfriend-laden Venezuelan home run derby and so much more in Winter Baseball. Also, there is delicious Silver Branch beer in a variety of Wicked Weed barware.
