Everything Would Break, with Jana Opincariu

Everything Would Break, with Jana Opincariu

Today we are speaking with artist Jana Opincariu, who lives in San Pedro. I was introduced to Jana’s work in June of 2020, at her solo exhibition, Meditations in Solidarity, a collection of paintings created during the pandemic at Hellada Gallery in Long Beach. A striking exhibit, it featured works from Jana’s Black Series, her Beautiful Grotesque series and other works — all of which demanded unremitting attention.

Hyper-realistic is just one way to describe this young artist's work. Jana creates images of human bodies, objects and animals that are surreal and fantastical—and some with macabre undertones.

Jana originally studied to become a medical lab scientist but decided to follow her true passion: art. She graduated with a dual bachelor’s in art history and studio art from University of New Mexico, with a focus on ancient Latin American art and European art through the centuries. Jana works in photography, printmaking and lithography but her passion is painting.

She finds inspiration from her studies of Spanish and Italian Baroque, her travels, nature, and her dreams.

Jana has shown in multiple cities across the Southwest and the Pacific coast. Her breakout show, Totem, a September 2019 collaboration with internationally known artist, Daniel Kathalynas, at the  Factory on 5th in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

    Jana’s other recent exhibitions include:
Intro to Black and Gold: A Series in Conversation solo show, Albuquerque Press Club January 2020
Black and Gold I: with TWO separate solo shows, Boxing Bear and Tractory Brewery in Albuquerque February-April 2020
Art in Sensuality 2021: Group Show, Hellada Gallery, Long Beach, February 2021 and 2022
The Harper 420 Golf Invitational Art Exhibition: Group Show, San Pedro, pop up April, 2021

    A statement from Ziga:

"This piece tells the story of my journey to finding hope. I used to be a person who was full of doubt, and fear, and pessimism. Although I have dreams and aspirations, I always had a negative mindset on achieving those things I wanted. So I questioned myself, how do I become a different person who actually believes I will fulfill things in life and use my faith. What am I lacking? It was hope. To me, hope is like the color yellow, because it represents optimism and wishing, praying, and trusting for a certain outcome. I learned that hope opens your mind to the world and too yourself."

    A Statement from Coralie:

"The idea of school moulding and not allowing talent to flourish came from my Year 9 English GCSE Speech. The piece was originally created really just for me to express some ideas and feelings, as well as practising some writing to see where I could take it.

The Universe's Needed Nucleus is a reflection of some feelings that myself and my friends have experienced. It comes from the idea that the current system is not accessible for everyone, and passions are not explored and nurtured as they should be. It comes from a place of feeling lost withins oneself which is a common feeling of teenagers (and myself) trying to navigate a system and environment where we want to be everything except ourselves, and then overcoming that when you start to break through that doubt by seeing role models like you. I am very excited to see this be featured on A Moment of Your Time!

A lot of my inspiration comes from two quotes by Sophia Bush (Activist, Actress and Podcast host): "Stop worrying about trying to be someone else's definition of enough, because you already are." and "You can be both a masterpiece and a work in progress simultaneously". I really like both these quotes, and I hope my work might someday make an impact for someone and lead them on to the idea that it is OKAY to be different and unique (similar as what Sophia Bush's work has done for me)."
