Does God Exist - Apologetics Series #8

0072 - In this episode in our "Apologetics Series" we take a look at one major argument for God's existence - the Kalam Cosmological Argument. We talk about the two premises in the argument and the evidence for them both scientifically and philosophically. We also take a look at how some atheists respond to this argument. Finally, we briefly touch on the young earth - old earth discussion and how General Revelation and Special Revelation will always match up if Christianity is true. Lots of good information in this episode. I hope you enjoy!!

In today’s episode, Becket chats with astrophysicist, Dr. Hugh Ross, about the existence (or non-existence) of Aliens, the misguided assumptions behind theories of a flat earth (which many people are now starting to embrace), the age of the earth based on Genesis 1:2, and the Big Bang. We find out what the implications of the fact that Jesus died for humans means for alien life on other planets. This stuff is fascinating!

The Age of the Earth - Theology in Action

The Age of the Earth - Theology in Action

Theology in Action is a series where we discuss how we can direct theological truth toward the way we think about and engage  with the things we interact with in our daily lives.

In this episode we talk about creation and the age of the earth. Is there room for disagreement on this topic, and if so, how do we communicate our differences and still have fellowship with other believers.

Dr. Hugh Ross: Scientific evidence for Old Earth

Greg was pleased to sit down with Dr. Hugh Ross this week. Dr. Ross is the
Founder and Senior Scholar at Reasons to Believe. Hugh holds a degree in physics from the University of British Columbia and a PhD in astronomy from the University of Toronto. They discussed and defined Old and Young Earth theory, as well as the biblical and scientific evidences for both. They also talked about some of the biblical creation theories that simply do not hold up to scientific scrutiny. This episode was very interesting! You wont want to miss it. Enjoy!

    Meet Justice Renee --

Justice Renée, born trans-female, was raised in a Fundamentalist Evangelical Home. Her father was a leader in the Young Earth/Creation Science movement in Utah and surrounding states through the 1980s and 90s. She was taught through shame to hate her trans identity.

In her preteens, Justice dedicated her life to Jesus and began ministry work with her church, AWANA, and CEF and gave her first evangelistic message at 13.

She went on to get Bachelor of Arts in Biblical Studies with a Missions Emphasis from Frontier School of the Bible, was Youth Pastor in Nebraska, worked at Christian Camps, and a CrossWorld Missions Candidate preparing for missions in Thailand.

In 2009, responding to the Housing Crisis, she founded “Tears of the Patriots”, a Tea Party Group connected with Libertarian and Christian Nationalism. Due to a myriad of reasons, Justice Renée re-examined her belief system over a period of 7 years ending with leaving the church. She opened to her partner about her gender issues in 2019 and transitioned in 2020.

Currently, Justice Renée works as a Systems Engineer at Target, helps amplify diverse voices through Secular North Productions, and raises her two kids with her partner in a co-housing community. She shares her story with others to give hope and move communities forward through the “Din of Conversation”. She found freedom in acceptance and a path forward from the hate.

Stepping out from behind the camera, Justice Renée has begun opening up in a more public way to build connections with others and amplify the "Din of Conversation".

    Elephants 2021 Part 1: Creation

    Elephants 2021 Part 1: Creation

What does every Christian need to believe about creation? What are the different theories out there? What should you do about Christians who believe differently than you?

In this message, Pastor Jamie answers these questions and more.

Things you should know as we discuss creation:

    1. Science is not the final authority on truth.

"Science is the belief in the ignorance of the experts" - Richard Feynman

    2. How God created is not an essential doctrine of our faith.

    Essential doctrines (unity)

    Biblical beliefs (charity)

    Personal opinions (humility)

    God created.

All origin theories must begin with three ingredients: time, energy and matter.

Genesis 1:1 “In the beginning (time) God created (energy) the heavens and the earth (matter).”

There are three main view points on HOW God created:

    1. Young Earth Creationism. - Genesis 1-6 is history.

     - The earth is somewhere between 6k and 10K years old.

     - Humans, animals and plants were created in a complete form with the ability to evolve on a small scale.

     - Modern science is wrong about the age of the earth and how humans appeared.

     - A worldwide flood destroyed all living things about 4400 years ago. This accounts for much of what looks like an older earth.

     - Dinosaurs were created with all the other animals in the garden, but became extinct soon afterwards.

    2. Theistic Evolution.

    - Genesis 1-6 is a parable meant to illustrate a spiritual truth, not explain the scientific and historical origins of the earth.

    - The universe is 13.8 billion years old, the earth is 4.5 billion years old

    - Humans, animals and plants evolved from a common ancestor. God created humans over the natural progression of time and put his likeness and image in mankind as we evolved into humans.

    - The flood in Genesis was regional, not worldwide – or it’s a parable demonstrating how God makes all things new.

    - Dinosaurs lived millions of years ago and eventually evolved into the ancestors of our modern day birds.

    3. The Gap theory.

    - There is large gap in time between Genesis 1:1 and 1:2.

    - The earth is 4.5 billion years old.

    - Humanity was created in complete form, per Genesis.

    - There was a worldwide flood.

    - Dinosaurs were part of the pre-Adamic creation.

How should we respond to the different creation theories?

    1. Worship the God of creation.

Revelation 4:11 “Worthy are you, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honor and power, for you created all things, and by your will they existed and were created.”

    Psalm 95:6

Let creation cause you to worship the Creator.

    2. Help those struggling in their faith because of creation.

According to a study by the Barna Group, one-quarter to one-third of all young adults who lose their faith said it was specifically due to the issue of science and creation.

    2 Peter 3:5-6, Romans 1:20

Do you worship the God of creation?

    Interpreting Genesis | Biblical Series

YEC, OEC, or other? Many people wonder how we are meant to approach the opening chapters of the Bible.
In this video, I aim to provide a comprehensive, yet simple guide to the discussion about the Genesis account. Instead of giving one direct answer, I attempt to approach this in a holistic way to present a fair account of the facts so that you can choose what you want to believe for yourself.

Evolution and Creationism as Science and Myth

Evolution and Creationism as Science and Myth
Myths symbolize ideas, values, history and other issues that are important to a people. They may be true or false, mundane or fantastic; their significance is their meaning, not their narrative content. Science is a way of knowing about the natural world. Its conclusions tentatively may be true or false, but its significance is its explanatory power: one has confidence in the process of science, even though some explanations change over time. Myth and science thus seem very different, but each has been utilized by proponents of both sides of the Christian creationism and evolution controversy. Eugenie Scott, Founding Executive Director, National Center for Science Education Understanding, explores how this role is essential in comprehending (much less mediating) this persistent conflict.
