60 Seconds for Time Out Tuesday: Do You Strive For Excellence or Perfection?
Hello to you listening in Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada!
Coming to you from Whidbey Island, Washington this is Stories From Women Who Walk with 60 Seconds for Time Out Tuesday and your host, Diane Wyzga.
Podcast episode number 1,000 aired on Monday 1st January 2024 New Years’s Day. That’s a lot of episodes!
What do I talk about? I talk about things that interest me, which is the magic of traditional storytelling, navigating our way in life, changing toxic narratives, personal experiences that have shape-shifted over time into wisdom, and the power of women’s voices.
I’ve been spending less time struggling to create my work because I’m no longer striving for perfection. I want to say what I mean, mean what I say, and use only a minute or two to get my point across. Is it perfection? Not so much. Is it excellence? Perhaps every now and again.
What changed me? This line by the American-British author, Henry James, considered to be among the greatest novelists in the English language. “Excellence does not require perfection.” [Henry James]
Question: What do you strive for?
You’re always invited: “Come for the stories - stay for the magic!” Speaking of magic, would you subscribe, share a 5-star rating + nice review on your social media or podcast channel of choice, and join us next time!

Meet Justice Renee --
Justice Renée, born trans-female, was raised in a Fundamentalist Evangelical Home. Her father was a leader in the Young Earth/Creation Science movement in Utah and surrounding states through the 1980s and 90s. She was taught through shame to hate her trans identity.
In her preteens, Justice dedicated her life to Jesus and began ministry work with her church, AWANA, and CEF and gave her first evangelistic message at 13.
She went on to get Bachelor of Arts in Biblical Studies with a Missions Emphasis from Frontier School of the Bible, was Youth Pastor in Nebraska, worked at Christian Camps, and a CrossWorld Missions Candidate preparing for missions in Thailand.
In 2009, responding to the Housing Crisis, she founded “Tears of the Patriots”, a Tea Party Group connected with Libertarian and Christian Nationalism. Due to a myriad of reasons, Justice Renée re-examined her belief system over a period of 7 years ending with leaving the church. She opened to her partner about her gender issues in 2019 and transitioned in 2020.
Currently, Justice Renée works as a Systems Engineer at Target, helps amplify diverse voices through Secular North Productions, and raises her two kids with her partner in a co-housing community. She shares her story with others to give hope and move communities forward through the “Din of Conversation”. She found freedom in acceptance and a path forward from the hate.
Stepping out from behind the camera, Justice Renée has begun opening up in a more public way to build connections with others and amplify the "Din of Conversation".

Irene Longman the First Woman in Queensland Parliament Case 15
Meet Irene Longman, the first woman to be elected into Queensland Parliament in 1929.
Could you imagine living in a society where when they were designing the parliament house, they didn’t even bother to put a female toilet in? Well, in 1929 Irene Maud Longman broke the glass ceiling in Queensland that women could stand for and be elected into QLD Parliament.

Reflection Questions:
- Research the term Glass Ceiling. What does this term mean, and does it have other applications other than politics?
- Explain why Irene thought it was important to have female police officers?
- How do political candidates tell people about their policies today? How does this differ from methods from more than 90 years ago?
- In her campaign leaflet Longman said, 'there can be no true democracy where only one sex is directly represented in parliament'. What is the implicit meaning of this statement?
- When QLD parliament house was built, there were no female toilets. What does this implicitly tell us about the role of women at this time?

Ally Isom: Making Space for Female Voices
In October 2015, President Russell M. Nelson, then-President of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, issued a plea to the women of the Church: “We need your strength, your conversion, your conviction, your ability to lead, your wisdom, and your voices.” Since becoming prophet, President Nelson has reiterated similar pleas and has said that the women of the Church have “the spiritual power to change the world.” So, how do we make space for female voices in today’s world? Ally Isom, former head of global branding for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, has a few ideas.
“If it’s about my errand on the Lord’s behalf, then I can do it. I get all kinds of confidence and courage knowing God asked me to do this and I will do anything. I put my career and my life on the alter long ago and I will do whatever God asks me to do.”

#100 "Goddesses" with Musician & Bodyworker, Natasha Althouse + Artist, Entrepreneur and Community Builder, Stephanie Diamond
Episode #100!!!! Made it to triple digits!
Today's special guests are the epitome of the feminine... creative, artistic, talented, nurturing, healing, and mystical. What a pleasure it is to share their stories.
My first guest, Natasha Althouse@musicbynatasha, is a musician, vocalist, wife, mom and holistic bodyworker whose healing practice focuses on postural imbalances, stress induced tension, injury care, and digestive and reproductive health. I met Natasha a few years ago for Mayan Abdominal Massage work and was blown away by the profound nature of what she does, blending massage, sound and energy work together in a very powerful way. We get to chat about life, how and why she makes music, the unique nature of Mayan Abdominal Massage, her connection to Ixchel and so much more. She's in the studio NOW working on an album which she expects to be birthed into the world sometime in 2020. She even gifts us with a little song during the interview. I cry...again.
Today's second guest is the multi-dimensional Stephanie Diamond, Artist, Entrepreneur and Community-Builder. She founded Listings Project -- listings and other opportunities geared towards artists and creatives -- 17 years ago and talks about how it has transformed over the years into a legit community building business! She also facilitates 5-Rhythms and explains how the nature of the experience of dancing 5-Rhythms so closely mirrors the reality of life. Before doing any of those things, Stephanie was and always has been an artist, creating, largely around community. Her Art has been exhibited at MoMA, MASS MoCA, MoMA/P.S. 1, Studio Museum in Harlem, Queens Museum of Art, Bronx Museum of the Arts, Project Row Houses, Philadelphia Mural Arts, SculptureCenter, The Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum and the Contemporary Art Center in Vilnius, Lithuania, to name a few. We talk about all this, plus the fact that she does not have a smart phone! I want what she doesn't have!!!
Today’s show was engineered by Manuel Blas at Radio Kingston, www.radiokingston.org.

Preserving Women’s Voices Through Quilting
Diana Bell-Kite, curator of cultural history at the North Carolina Museum of History, speaks about how women in the 18th century preserved their cultural heritage through quilting. She also discusses how those stories captured through quilting speak volumes about the time period. Bell-Kite says women today are still using quilting to express themselves.
