    enSeptember 23, 2019

    Podcast Summary

    • The Power of Warmth in Influencing OthersDisplaying warmth and caring about others' welfare can significantly influence people in various situations, from hostile negotiations to sales. HubSpot's Service Hub can help businesses build strong customer relationships through personal connections using AI-powered tools.

Key takeaway from this episode of Nudge is that displaying warmth and caring about others' welfare can significantly influence people, even in hostile negotiations. Joseph Marks, a doctoral researcher at University College London and a visiting researcher at MIT, explains that warmth is a characteristic that all of us can adopt to influence others. He gives examples of how it has been effective in situations as diverse as terrorist interrogations and sales negotiations. Additionally, the importance of personal connections with customers was discussed, and how HubSpot's Service Hub can help businesses better connect and keep their customers happy through its AI-powered help desk, chatbot, and customer success workspace. Overall, the episode emphasizes the power of warmth and caring in influencing others and building strong customer relationships.

    • The Power of Warmth and VulnerabilityDisplaying warmth and vulnerability towards others can increase trust, lead to better outcomes, and create positive experiences in various situations

Displaying warmth towards others, even in unexpected situations, can have a profound impact. This was evident in a study of interrogations, where interviewees who experienced respect, dignity, and integrity from their interviewers were less likely to use counter interrogation tactics. Warmth can increase tips, decrease malpractice lawsuits, and even get colleagues to help out more at work. People are drawn to warmth because it makes someone seem genuine and trustworthy. Another trait that signals this is vulnerability. A study revealed that sharing vulnerability, like offering money to skip a security line, can make people more likable. Overall, being nice to people and showing warmth and vulnerability can lead to better outcomes in various situations.

    • Displaying goodwill and kindness increases participationPeople are more likely to participate when they can publicly display their good intentions, and charities can leverage this by providing opportunities for public donations.

Showing vulnerability and warmth can lead to positive outcomes. A study conducted by Erez Yohaleli and colleagues demonstrated this concept when testing the effectiveness of a voluntary demand response energy program. Those who publicly declared their intentions to participate by writing their names and flat numbers on a communal board were three times more likely to sign up than those who used an anonymous code. This behavior shows that people want to display their goodwill and kindness to others, and charities can leverage this by providing opportunities for publicizing donations. Another influential soft characteristic, charisma, also plays a role in effective communication. Charismatic individuals use more hand gestures, which has been linked to successful messaging. The halo effect further enhances these characteristics, leading people to assume that those who exhibit one trait possess many more.

    • The power of perceived trustworthiness and influenceIndividuals perceived as attractive, trustworthy, or charismatic can significantly impact behavior, even in areas they're not experts. Influencer marketing leverages this phenomenon to promote products or ideas to followers.

People are more likely to trust and be influenced by individuals perceived as attractive, trustworthy, or charismatic, even if they are not experts in a particular area. This phenomenon has been observed in various fields, including politics, where endorsements from popular figures can significantly impact voter behavior. This is the basis for influencer marketing, which relies on engaging and influential individuals to promote products or ideas to their followers. For instance, Oprah Winfrey's endorsement of Barack Obama in 2007 and Taylor Swift's Instagram post about the midterm elections in 2018 illustrate the power of influencer marketing. These individuals, who are not experts in politics, were able to sway the behavior of millions of people due to their perceived trustworthiness and influence. Steve Raison, the founder of BuzzSumo, a web-based software product for marketers that reveals the most shared content online, also leveraged this phenomenon to promote his business. Instead of spending money on advertising, he focused on getting influencers in the industry to talk about his product. By identifying individuals with high engagement within the content marketing community, Raison was able to effectively promote his product and grow awareness for his startup.

    • Building relationships with micro-influencersFocus on helping influencers build genuine relationships for potential benefits, not just what can be gained from them.

Building relationships with micro-influencers can be an effective strategy for growing a business, even if they have a relatively small following. Steve, who successfully implemented this approach with Buzzimo, emphasized the importance of engagement and trust. He didn't rely on large advertising campaigns or traditional marketing methods but instead focused on connecting with 20 influencers in his industry. Research supports this approach, as a 2017 study found that people develop new beliefs and opinions from trusted figures within their industry, not large organizations or ads. To build relationships with these influencers, Steve engaged with their content, offered help, and even met them physically at events. It took time, but ultimately, 12 to 14 of the influencers became advocates for the tool. The key takeaway is that businesses should focus on how they can help influencers, rather than what they can get from them. Building genuine relationships takes time, but it can lead to significant benefits.

    • Leveraging Influencer Marketing for Brand GrowthBuilding genuine relationships with influencers through reciprocity can lead to increased brand reach and engagement. Involve influencers in content creation and encourage them to share it with their followers to maximize impact.

The use of influencer marketing can significantly increase brand awareness and reach, even on a limited budget. The key to successful influencer marketing is building genuine relationships based on reciprocity. Steve, a marketing expert, shared research and data with influencers for free, which in turn led them to share his content with their audiences. This simple strategy resulted in an exponential increase in reach and engagement. According to research, when multiple influencers share the same content, it tends to go viral. Therefore, it's essential to involve influencers in the content creation process and encourage them to share it with their followers before publication. This approach not only increases the reach of the content but also builds trust and credibility with the influencer community. BuzzSumo, a marketing tool company, grew to over 100,000 users within the first year using this strategy, demonstrating the power of influencer marketing in driving growth.

    • The Power of the Right Messenger: Trust and CharismaInvesting in relationships with trustworthy and charismatic messengers can lead to significant business growth without relying on advertising

Having the right messengers with trust and charisma can significantly influence an audience and drive business growth. As discussed, BuzzSumo's success story is a prime example, with influencers like Rand Fishkin playing a crucial role in promoting their product and helping the company reach $2.5 million in revenue in their first year and attracting high-profile clients like IBM, Expedia, Buzzfeed, and Yahoo. Trust and charisma are two key traits mentioned in Joseph Grenny's book "Messenger" that make messengers convincing. Trust is built through openness and transparency, while charisma is about being likable and charismatic. These traits can increase the amount of favors you get from colleagues, help you skip lines at airports, and even make TED talks more successful. By focusing on finding and connecting with the right messengers and investing time in building relationships, businesses can achieve remarkable results without spending money on advertising. So, if you're looking to make an impact and grow your business, remember the power of the right messenger with trust and charisma.

The speech that put a man on the moon

The speech that put a man on the moon
It seems inevitable to us now that someone would eventually land on the moon. But back in 1962 that wasn’t so certain. With the ever-rising costs of the Apollo space program, and a huge amount of tax needed from each US citizen, JFK struggled to convince people. That was until one speech on a sunny day in September. This speech went down in history, persuading the nation to reach for the moon. In today’s Nudge, I explain the psychological tactics Kennedy used to make that speech so compelling.
