The hosts of "We Can Do Hard Things" recently moved across the country and shared their experiences of the challenges and responsibilities of moving with a family, including helping their children make new friends.

    • Navigating Friendships as a ChildUnderstanding individual needs and expectations is crucial in forming and maintaining friendships. Childhood friendships require effort and prioritization to nurture and deepen.

Being a child comes with unique challenges when it comes to making friends and building social connections. Unlike adults, children are often forced to interact with strangers and form friendships in unfamiliar environments. As a teacher, the speaker observed this precariousness and understood the fear and uncertainty that comes with being a child. Furthermore, the speaker shared her personal struggles with forming friendships as an introvert and sensitive person, feeling overwhelmed by the potential expectations and loss of control. However, the speaker also emphasized the importance of deep soul alignment and understanding in friendships, suggesting that different people have varying needs and expectations. Ultimately, the speaker expressed regret over not spending enough time with cherished friends in the past and encouraged the importance of prioritizing and nurturing these relationships. In conclusion, the discussion highlighted the significance of forming meaningful connections, especially during childhood, and the importance of understanding individual needs and expectations in building and maintaining friendships.

    • Exploring New Friendships in the Next DecadeEmbrace uncertainty and potential of new friendships, even if it means stepping out of comfort zone. Share stories and find comfort in knowing you're not alone in experiences.

Glennon Doyle, the podcast host, is embarking on a new journey to focus on building friendships in her next decade of life. She and her family have decided to be open to new experiences and opportunities, saying "yes" to everything that comes their way. This change comes after recognizing the importance of connection and solidarity with others, especially during the challenging experiences of parenthood. Despite not having all the answers, Glennon encourages listeners to share their stories and find comfort in knowing they are not alone in their experiences. The idea is to embrace the uncertainty and potential of new friendships, even if it means stepping out of one's comfort zone.

    • Quality matters in screen time for kidsEmbrace moments of rest and togetherness, even if they involve screens, rather than focusing solely on the quantity of screen time.

While it's important to be mindful of screen time for children, it's not just about the quantity, but also the quality of the screen time. The speaker shares her personal experience of feeling guilty about screen time, but also recognizes the value of shared experiences like family movie nights. She encourages embracing moments of rest and togetherness, even if they involve screens. So, the answer to the question "How many Disney movies a day is too many?" is not a definitive number, but rather a reminder to consider the context and the nature of the screen time.

    • Navigating New Identity and Priorities as a New ParentFocus on survival and adaptability during new parenthood, prioritize energy and resources, seek support, and invest in comfort to thrive

Becoming a new parent brings unexpected identity shifts and prioritization changes, which can feel overwhelming and stormy, but it's essential to focus on survival and adaptability during this time. Instead of trying to navigate friendships and relationships like usual, prioritize your energy and resources on your new role as a parent. Remember, it's an emergency situation, and you're in a war zone. Seek support from friends and family, and don't hesitate to ask for help. Additionally, watching movies and incorporating learning activities into family time can provide educational benefits and create cherished memories. Lastly, investing in comfortable and well-fitting bras, like those offered by 3rd love, can alleviate stress and discomfort during this hectic time.

    • Navigating Identity and Peace in Early ParenthoodNew parents should prioritize self-care and understand that it's normal to feel overwhelmed during the early stages of parenthood. They will eventually regain their sense of self.

During the early stages of parenthood, it's essential to understand that it's a time outside of regular life where identity and peace might take a back seat. New parents are in survival mode, and it's okay to let go of the need to focus on these aspects. Instead, they should go easy on themselves and know that they will eventually regain their sense of self. This is similar to starting a new job or facing a significant life change, where one may initially feel overwhelmed but will eventually adapt and return to their usual self. It's crucial to acknowledge and prioritize personal needs, even if it means missing an occasional event or activity, to maintain a healthy balance. Ultimately, parents should remember that the challenging phase of new parenthood will pass, and they will once again be able to focus on their identity and personal growth.

    • Parents shape children's communication skillsParents' communication habits influence children's ability to express needs and respect boundaries.

Parents play a significant role in shaping their children's understanding of expressing needs and emotions. If a parent consistently models the importance of asserting needs, such as saying "no" or taking alone time, children learn that it's okay to do the same. Conversely, if a parent encourages excessive expression of feelings, children may feel they need to discuss every thought or emotion, leading to potential overwhelm. It's essential to find a balance and teach children that expressing needs is crucial, but so is respecting boundaries and understanding that not every moment requires extensive discussion. By modeling healthy communication and need assertion, parents can help their children develop essential life skills.

    • Parenting styles influenced by past experiencesParents may swing between extreme parenting styles based on their upbringings, but it's crucial to find a balance and avoid rigid narratives to raise well-adjusted children. Communicate openly about alcohol risks and set clear boundaries.

Parents may swing between extreme parenting styles as a response to their own upbringings, creating a pendulum effect. This pattern, driven by a desire to avoid past traumas, can lead to guilt and uncertainty about the best way to raise children. For instance, a parent who grew up in a highly disciplined household might swing to the opposite extreme, allowing their children too much freedom. Conversely, a parent from a permissive background might become overly strict. However, it's essential to question whether these stories about our past experiences truly shape our children's lives or if we're creating a pendulum out of thin air. Ultimately, the goal should be to find a balance and avoid creating rigid narratives based on our past. Regarding alcohol and its impact on children, Glenn and the caller discussed the importance of open communication and setting clear boundaries. They acknowledged that every family is unique and that there's no one-size-fits-all approach. Instead, they emphasized the importance of educating children about the risks and responsibilities associated with alcohol use.

    • Open conversations about sensitive topicsProvide accurate info, avoid moral judgement, and have ongoing discussions on alcohol and sex with teenagers.

Having open and honest conversations about sensitive topics like alcohol and sex with teenagers is important, but can be challenging for parents. The speaker shares her experiences of trying to make these topics less awkward and confusing for her children, while also being transparent about her own struggles with alcoholism. She emphasizes the importance of providing accurate information and avoiding assigning moral values to choices. The conversation also highlights the ongoing nature of these discussions and the evolving comfort level of teenagers with such topics. While the speaker's children are aware of her past struggles with alcohol and the potential genetic predisposition they may have, it remains uncertain how this will impact their own choices regarding alcohol and sex in the future. Overall, the conversation underscores the importance of open and ongoing communication between parents and teenagers on these topics.

    • Exploring new experiences through language and entertainmentLearning a new language with Rosetta Stone and watching 'Hacks' can enhance experiences and improve overall health

Expanding your horizons through learning a new language and trying new things can significantly enhance your experiences. The speaker shares her regret of not fully learning a non-English language during her time abroad and recommends Rosetta Stone for effective language acquisition. Additionally, she suggests watching the TV show "Hacks" for heartwarming entertainment and emphasizes the importance of drinking water for overall health. Though challenging, these actions can make life easier and more enjoyable. Don't miss out on the opportunity to learn a new language with Rosetta Stone's lifetime membership offer at a 50% discount. And, for a little ease and joy, give "Hacks" a watch and make sure to stay hydrated with a daily intake of water.

    • Small steps to improve well-beingDrinking water and self-care can lead to significant improvements in overall well-being, starting with small, manageable actions

Even small, simple actions like drinking water can have a positive impact on our overall well-being. The speaker, Glennon, shares her personal experience of feeling better after drinking just two glasses of water a day, despite being someone who rarely drinks water. She encourages listeners to focus on easy, achievable steps to improve their health and mental wellness, especially during times of feeling overwhelmed or facing big changes. Glennon also emphasizes the importance of self-care and self-compassion, suggesting that instead of making drastic life changes, we can start with small, manageable actions like drinking a glass of water when we need it. So, remember, even small steps can lead to significant improvements in our lives.
