    185. The End of Universities? | Jordan B. Peterson Podcast

    enAugust 02, 2021

    Podcast Summary

    • University Experience: Confusion and DisillusionmentUniversities can be disillusioning for some, with self-censorship, trigger warnings, and safe spaces hindering intellectual growth and open debate, particularly for those from diverse backgrounds. However, some still believe in their potential for progress.

The university experience for some individuals, as shared by Yanri Park, can be far from the historical ideals of free thought and intellectual exploration. Instead, it can involve self-censorship, trigger warnings, and an emphasis on creating safe spaces over open debate. This can lead to confusion and disillusionment, particularly for those coming from different cultural backgrounds. Despite these challenges, some, like JBP, still believe in the potential for universities to be places of intellectual growth and progress. However, increased awareness of these issues is necessary before meaningful change can occur.

    • South Korean vs Western educational approachesWhile South Korean universities focus on technical skills and factual knowledge, Western institutions prioritize critical thinking and shaping perspectives. However, tensions arise when addressing diversity and inclusion, requiring a balance between respectful and inclusive practices.

South Korean and Western educational systems have distinct approaches to teaching. South Korean universities focus more on technical skills and factual knowledge, while Western institutions prioritize critical thinking and shaping students' perspectives. However, there can be tensions between these approaches, particularly when it comes to issues of diversity and inclusion. In the context of a university in South Korea, separate meetings for marginalized groups were intended to protect them from potential insensitivity, but this paternalistic approach was met with criticism. In contrast, some healing resources suggested after a controversial event included radical and divisive content, which raised questions about the intended purpose and potential unintended consequences of such measures. Ultimately, it's essential to acknowledge and learn from these differences while striving for inclusive and respectful educational environments.

    • Scrutinizing art and literature through a modern lens of moral offenseModern criticism of classic art and literature stems from envy and resentment, threatens intellectual standards, and stifles free thought and creativity.

There's a dangerous trend in Western society to scrutinize and criticize the great works of art and literature from the past through a modern lens of moral offense, often driven by envy and resentment. This not only shows a lack of understanding and appreciation for these masterpieces, but it also threatens the intellectual standards of the Western world. Universities, in particular, have become breeding grounds for this intellectual pandemic, where individuals are suspended or targeted for expressing dissenting opinions, even if they come from those who are typically considered part of marginalized communities. This metaphysical restraint stifles free thought and creativity, and it's essential to challenge this trend to preserve the richness and diversity of Western culture.

    • Intersectionality and labels create unique challengesAs a female immigrant, facing multiple forms of discrimination can be compounded. Labels and categorization can lead to division, but accessing knowledge efficiently and considering brain health can improve experiences.

Identity and experiences can intersect to create unique challenges and oppressions. Using the example of being a female immigrant, one might face multiple forms of discrimination that can be compounded. However, the use of labels and categorization can also lead to division and misunderstanding. Additionally, the pressure to conform to certain political views or face consequences can be a concern. On a different note, the importance of accessing key ideas and knowledge efficiently was highlighted. Blinkist offers a solution by summarizing non-fiction books into 15-minute "blinks" and podcasts called "short casts," allowing individuals to learn and broaden their knowledge in a convenient way. Lastly, the discussion touched on the effects of aging on the brain and the potential benefits of taking supplements like MATTER, developed in partnership with the University of Oxford, to help slow down memory decline.

    • Lifestyle choices and nutritional deficiencies impact brain health, academic freedom under threatA deficiency in B vitamins is common, Matter supplement can help slow memory loss. Be picky about omega-3 sources. Academic freedom under threat at Mount Alison University. Pyramid of racism reveals problematic ideas in seemingly virtuous contexts.

Our lifestyle choices and nutritional deficiencies can contribute to brain health issues. For instance, a deficiency in B vitamins is common in America, and Matter, a patented supplement, can help slow down age-related memory loss by an average of 86%. Moreover, it's crucial to be picky about the sources of omega-3s, as many omega and fish oils available in drugstores can be rancid and detrimental to health. Regarding academic freedom, the incident at Mount Alison University is a concerning symptom of a broader issue. Tenured professors should be able to express their ideas freely, and the fact that this wasn't the case despite tenure is a significant problem. This issue could have far-reaching consequences, as what happens in universities often spreads to other areas. The unwarranted allegations and the cowardice shown by institutions in response to these allegations should be a cause for concern for everyone. The pyramid of racism, or the Pyramid of White Supremacy, presented at a professional development meeting, showcased how seemingly contradictory ideas could be grouped together, and some of these ideas, such as being apolitical or believing that there are two sides to every story, could be considered virtues. However, when placed in the context of the pyramid, they could be perceived as problematic. Overall, these issues highlight the importance of protecting academic freedom and critical thinking.

    • Limiting Understanding with Preconceived SchemasEscaping North Korea, a woman felt her education at Columbia was a waste due to politically correct philosophies, promoting open-mindedness and valuing impactful ideas in education.

Prioritizing preconceived schemas and explanations over individual experiences and critical thinking can limit our understanding of the world and hinder personal growth. This was evident in the experiences shared by a woman who escaped from North Korea and felt her education at Columbia University was a waste of time due to the politically correct and empty philosophies she encountered. The loss of critical thinking and the promotion of propagandized instruction in universities is a concerning trend in the Western world. Instead, it's essential to approach education with an open mind, valuing the potential impact of great books and ideas on our personal growth and development.

    • Feeling censored at Columbia UniversityThe speaker regrets the loss of genuine education and freedom to explore diverse perspectives at Columbia University, fearing the potential consequences of a world without these values.

The speaker's experience at Columbia University left them feeling censored and politically correct, leading to a sense of shame and fear for the future of civilization. They felt that the focus on social issues came at the expense of a genuine education and the freedom to explore diverse perspectives. The speaker lamented the loss of Western art and culture in the curriculum and expressed concern about the potential consequences of a world without freedom. They urged the importance of educating young people about the fragility of freedom and the need to protect it.

    • The importance of education in personal growth and ethical decision-makingEducation in the humanities helps individuals understand their purpose, make ethical decisions, and grow personally. Neglecting this can lead to a lack of potential and harm in the world.

Education, particularly in the humanities, plays a crucial role in helping individuals understand their purpose in life and make ethical decisions. The speaker lamented the lack of education on historical atrocities and the importance of addressing the spiritual or philosophical domain. He emphasized the need for a career or job, education, health, relationships, and leisure time, all of which should be centered around a focus on the spiritual or philosophical. The humanities, when properly taught, help individuals understand their potential and make decisions to do good in the world instead of harm. Neglecting this can lead to a catastrophic problem where individuals are less than they could be. The speaker also highlighted the importance of helping individuals, especially those in disadvantaged situations, understand their relationship to what's ultimately noble. Education is essential for personal growth and ethical decision-making.

    • Emphasizing the importance of passion and discipline for successPassion and discipline are crucial for success in any field, even in intense competition. Prepare well for a career in research, from a bachelor's degree onwards, and never neglect the basics.

Having a strong passion for learning and the discipline to put in the necessary work are essential for success in any field, even in the face of intense competition. This was emphasized by the speaker, who shared their own experience of teaching themselves to read and study obsessively to the point of neglecting basic needs like eating. They also discussed the importance of the right preparation for pursuing a career in research, from a bachelor's degree onwards, and the need for both passion and discipline in students. The speaker also highlighted the unique competitive nature of education in South Korea, making the drive to learn even more crucial.

    • University experiences shaped her perspectiveUniversity broadened her horizons, instilling a drive for knowledge and appreciation for first-rate ideas

The speaker's experiences, particularly during her time in university, played a significant role in shaping her perspective on life and her pursuit of knowledge. Despite facing challenges such as working as a waitress and living in cramped quarters, she remained determined and driven by her desire to understand justice and the world around her. The university experience, with its emphasis on the best creations, ideas, and scientific finesse, provided her with valuable insights and broadened her horizons. The professor's encouragement and dedication to nurturing young minds left a lasting impact on her, inspiring her to appreciate the contributions of first-rate minds and to approach ideas based on their merit rather than the person presenting them.

    • A transformative institution prioritizing truth, beauty, free speech, and friendshipRalston College aspires to revolutionize higher education with a masters program in the humanities, focusing on exploring big ideas and personal growth through historical study.

Ralston College aspires to be a transformative institution that prioritizes truth, beauty, free speech, and friendship. It aims to be a reinvention and revival of the academy, offering a new model for higher education with a masters program in the humanities as its first degree. This intensive program is designed to help students explore big ideas and open up their depths through the study of history. Ralston College's ultimate goal is to lead the way in creating more valuable, beautiful, and disruptive educational experiences, inspiring others to follow suit.

    • A place for humanistic inquiry and questioning what it means to be humanThe Academy is not just about music degrees, but also a platform for individuals to engage with humanistic tradition, seek truth, and ask fundamental human questions about truth, beauty, forgiveness, love, and suffering.

The high end of the Academy is not just about degree programs for playing music, but also a platform for humanistic inquiry. It's a place where individuals from anywhere can engage with the humanistic tradition, seek truth courageously, and ask fundamental human questions about truth, beauty, forgiveness, love, and suffering. Universities are essential to the ongoing conversation across generations about what it means to be human, and this question is not an abstract philosophical concern, but rather the central issue that influences all life decisions.
