    190. Andy & DJ CTI: Antonio Brown, Philly Crime Crisis & DC Protest

    enDecember 09, 2021

    Podcast Summary

    • Speakers encourage individuals to take action and stand up for what they believe inSpeakers urged listeners to break free from complacency, get involved in their communities, and have the courage to challenge the status quo despite challenges and censorship.

Individuals need to take action and stand up for what they believe in, rather than relying on others to do it for them. The speakers expressed frustration with the current state of the world and the lack of action from people, despite many voices raising awareness about the issues. They emphasized the importance of non-compliance, community involvement, and having a backbone to effect change. They also criticized the notion that toxic masculinity is the problem, arguing instead that there's a lack of it and more men need to step up and take responsibility. The speakers acknowledged the challenges of waking up to the reality of the situation, especially with increasing censorship, but encouraged listeners to stay informed and get involved.

    • Ignoring Societal Issues: Vaccinations and Legal RamificationsApathy towards societal issues, like vaccine refusal, can lead to legal ramifications for both individuals and companies. Employers may face wrongful termination lawsuits for firing unvaccinated employees, and the NFL could set a precedent for mandatory vaccinations.

The discussion revolves around the issue of apathy and ignorance towards important societal issues, specifically the refusal of vaccinations and the potential consequences of such actions. The speakers express frustration that people are not taking action against systemic problems and instead, are focused on their own lives. They also discuss the potential legal ramifications for companies that have terminated employees for not getting vaccinated, which could lead to wrongful termination lawsuits. The conversation also touches upon the NFL and Antonio Brown's vaccine debacle, with the speakers predicting that the NFL will set a precedent for mandatory vaccinations and that businesses could face significant lawsuits if they fire unvaccinated employees. Ultimately, the speakers emphasize the importance of being aware of societal issues and taking action to address them.

    • Potential Accountability for Enforcing COVID-19 Vaccine MandatesThose who have enforced COVID-19 vaccine mandates may face future accountability, as many people may not have received the vaccine and lawyers are preparing to take legal action. Individuals and businesses should prepare for potential legal action and financial gain.

The speaker believes that those who have enforced COVID-19 vaccine mandates, including businesses and organizations, may face accountability for their actions in the future. He argues that many people may not actually have received the vaccine, and lawyers are already preparing to take legal action. The speaker also mentions that some large companies have not implemented vaccine mandates, possibly because they know it's illegal. He encourages those who have been mandated or forced to take the vaccine against their will to prepare for potential legal action and financial gain. The speaker also expresses sympathy for those who have been negatively impacted by the mandates and predicts that this situation will create opportunities for businesses and individuals.

    • Ignoring technical expertise in video/audio production can harm reputationDisastrous consequences can result from underestimating technical expertise in media production. Use your voice or resources to support positive content and stand up for your beliefs.

Underestimating the importance of technical expertise, particularly in the areas of video and audio production, can lead to disastrous consequences. This was illustrated through a discussion about a poorly produced music video and the impact it had on the artist's reputation. Additionally, the conversation touched on the importance of standing up for one's beliefs and the power of consumer action as a form of protest. The speakers emphasized the long-term consequences of supporting divisive or harmful content, and the importance of using one's voice or resources to make a positive impact.

    • Downplaying serious issues in powerIgnoring or downplaying serious issues, like crime or divisive policies, can misrepresent the situation and hinder progress.

There are individuals in positions of power who downplay serious issues, such as the increase in crime or the divisive effects of certain policies, despite evidence to the contrary. The discussion also touched upon the comparison of these actions to historical segregation and the importance of standing up for what is right. In the case of Philadelphia, District Attorney Larry Krasner's dismissive attitude towards the city's record-breaking homicide rate has raised concerns. His insistence that there isn't a crisis of crime or violence, despite a 13% increase in homicides and other relevant statistics, is seen as a misrepresentation of the situation. This highlights the importance of acknowledging and addressing issues rather than trying to downplay them.

    • Political leaders and community disconnect over crime and public safetyPerceived lack of empathy and inconsistent responses from political leaders fuel mistrust and distort the truth, creating a dangerous cycle.

There is a perceived disconnect between political leaders and the communities they serve, particularly in relation to crime and public safety. The speaker expresses concern over increasing homicide rates, but seems more focused on the racial demographics of the victims and the perceived lack of empathy from political leaders. They also criticize the media for amplifying certain narratives and distorting the truth. The speaker believes that this creates a dangerous cycle where the truth is ignored and history is rewritten. They also criticize the politicization of events like the January 6th Capitol riots and the response to the COVID-19 pandemic, arguing that inconsistent responses to different issues reveal a lack of integrity and a disregard for the value of human life.

    • Media's Influence on Public PerceptionSpeaker expresses frustration with media's role in shaping public perception, criticizes left-wing protests for obstructing progress, and calls for action to restore order.

The media's influence can shape public perception, and sometimes the truth gets lost in the process. The speaker expresses frustration with the current state of affairs, where crime goes unchecked and activists obstruct progress under the guise of various causes. He believes that the hypocrisy and reversal of values have reached a boiling point, and drastic measures may be necessary to restore order. The speaker also criticizes the left-wing protests in DC, comparing them to an insurrection due to their traffic-blocking nature and the causes they represent. Overall, the speaker's sentiment is one of exhaustion and a call for action to address the issues at hand.

    • Protest Prevents WWII Veterans from Honoring Pearl HarborProtesters obstructed WWII veterans from honoring Pearl Harbor anniversary, causing frustration and anger. Left-supported protesters hindered progress, lack of law enforcement allowed disorder, and strong leadership desired.

The peaceful protest on December 7, 2021, which was scheduled to coincide with the anniversary of Pearl Harbor, prevented World War II veterans from honoring the event at the monument. The speaker expresses frustration and anger towards the protesters, who were allegedly making racist remarks and obstructing the veterans. The speaker believes that these protesters, who are largely supported by the left, are being coddled and are hindering the progress of the country. The speaker also criticizes the lack of law enforcement to maintain order and allow the veterans to reach the monument. Overall, the speaker is disillusioned with the current state of affairs and expresses a desire for strong leadership to address the issues.

    • Frustration with Extremist Voices in Politics and MediaThe speaker calls for a more assertive stance against extremist voices in politics and media, criticizing the perceived weakness of moderate leaders and the use of political correctness to silence dissenting voices. They believe that trying to appease or negotiate with extremists is futile and that it's time for a change in the conversation.

The speaker is expressing frustration with the perceived power of extremist voices in politics and media, and the perceived weakness of moderate leaders to challenge them. They believe that trying to appease or negotiate with these extremists is futile, and that the business culture empowers this behavior. The speaker also criticizes the use of political correctness as a tool to silence dissenting voices and the fear it instills in business leaders. They call for a more assertive stance against these extremist voices and an end to fence-riding. The speaker expresses exhaustion with the current state of affairs and a desire for change. The conversation also touches upon the perception that these extremist voices are largely present online and not in everyday life. The speaker believes that it's time for a change in the conversation and for people to stand up and say "no" to extremist narratives.

    • Maintaining core values vs. the vocal minorityDon't let vocal minorities overshadow the greater good. Prioritize giving back to the community, even with significant costs.

While holding onto personal beliefs and values is important, it's essential not to let the opinions of a vocal minority overshadow the greater good. The discussion also touched upon the extravagance of the world record for most Christmas lights and the importance of giving back to the community. Tim Gay's family, who holds this record, turns their annual light display into a fundraiser for local charities. Despite the costs, they prioritize giving back and spreading joy during the holiday season. Ultimately, it's a reminder to maintain our core values while being mindful of the impact we have on our communities.

    • The rich man's tax: Pride and personal preferences drive significant costsPeople prioritize their pride and preferences, even if it means paying a 'rich man's tax' for larger homes or luxury items, and are willing to work harder to afford these expenses.

Pride and personal preferences can influence decisions, even if they come with significant costs, which in this context is referred to as the "rich man's tax." This tax refers to the increased expenses that come with owning larger homes or luxury items. The speaker acknowledges the embarrassing nature of these costs but sees it as a matter of principle, refusing to be taken advantage of. He aspires to earn more money to afford these expenses and sees it as a necessary investment. Despite the financial strain, he refuses to compromise on his standards and values.

Pod Save America’s Jon Favreau on Trump’s first year, the GOP’s “rot,” and the left’s failures
Jon Favreau was President Obama’s chief speechwriter. In those days, he was a frequent critic of the political media, frustrated, as many in the Obama administration were, with its focus on conflict, on ephemera, on appearing even-handed even when reality was persistently skewed. Today, Favreau is changing the media from the inside. He’s a co-host on Pod Save America, and co-founder of Crooked Media, both of which have seen tremendous growth in 2017. In this conversation, we look back on 2017, talk through the first year of the Trump White House (“a day-to-day shitshow”); the Democrats he’s watching for 2020; the mechanics of building a podcast empire; Favreau’s concern about the left (“we need to take the time to persuade other people of what we believe”); and the rot in the Republican Party. To Favreau, the right-wing media is “the real center of gravity in that party; it’s not the Republicans in Congress, it’s not even really Donald Trump, although I guess you could say that he is, in some ways, a creation of that media machine.” Books: What Happened by Hillary Clinton The News: A User’s Manual by Alain de Botton All the Truth is Out by Matt Bai Learn more about your ad choices. RTÉ The Musical: Part 4

    RTÉ The Musical: Part 4

RTE can’t escape scandal. The controversies of the last six months have demonstrated how the organisation operated in the dark.

But there is a bigger story.

On Free State, Joe and Dion look at how RTE was captured. How free and fearless journalism has been replaced by cronyism.

They trace the story of decline back to the 1970s to see how journalism and journalists in RTE were censored during the Troubles. Dion and Joe disagree about Section 31 which banned Sinn Fein from television and radio.

They look too at how self-censorship took over before it increasingly resembles the political establishment, with challenging voices -and northern nationalists - not welcome. While it rightly mobilised to support the people of Ukraine, Gaza has been a different story with even the smallest show of support forbidden.

Instead of being the crusading station it once was, RTE comforted the comfortable and left the afflicted to fend for themselves.

Bigger Than a Game: The Birth of Angel City

Bigger Than a Game: The Birth of Angel City
When Julie Uhrman and her twin sister were nine years old, they brought a flyer home to join the basketball league at their local YMCA. To which their mom responded: You know, the ‘M’ stands for Men’s, right? “We weren’t concerned by that at all," Julie reflects. "We showed up at The Y. There were 80 boys and the two of us. The first thing that went through my mind was: Give me the ball. Let me show you what I can do. Then, let’s win the game.” She’s been a fierce competitor and change maker since. Julie went on to be captain of her collegiate basketball team. Yet, she still didn’t see a viable career path in sports due to the lack of visible pathways for women. Three decades later, she’s not only founded and runs Los Angeles’ new national women’s soccer team, Angel City. Alongside a passionate group of athletes, actresses, and investors, she’s creating a first of its kind platform to impact lasting change on and off the field. Julie’s courage to be the first, both in fourth grade and today leading the first ever majority women-owned sports team, was inspired by her extraordinary mom. Her mantra - “She didn’t know it couldn’t be done. So, she went ahead and did it.” - and the ‘I can’t’ funeral she held for her students, illuminate exactly why her daughters continue to be game-changers.
