    Podcast Summary

    • YouTuber David Dobrik's Alleged Involvement in Atlanta Shooting IncidentYouTuber David Dobrik's alleged involvement in a shooting incident at a massage parlor in Atlanta led to the end of his business relationship with Dollar Shave Club. The incident raises questions about consent and the separation of art from the artist.

David Dobrik, a popular YouTuber, found himself in the news for a tragic and shocking incident where he allegedly shot and killed eight people, mostly Asian, at a massage parlor in Atlanta. The fallout from this incident saw Dollar Shave Club ending their business relationship with Dobrik. Dobrik released a video apologizing for his actions, but the incident raises questions about consent and the separation of art from the artist. While Dobrik's past content was often lighthearted and consensual, the shooting incident was not. The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of consent and the consequences of actions, even for those with significant public profiles.

    • YouTube Star David Dobrik's Prank Gone Wrong Leads to Fatalities and AllegationsYouTube star David Dobrik's prank involving fake bullets at a spa resulted in fatalities, but recent allegations of sexual assault overshadow the incident. Dobrik has removed certain videos, adding to the confusion about his involvement in the Atlanta massacre.

The discussion revolves around allegations against YouTube star David Dobrik, regarding a prank gone wrong that resulted in the deaths of people at a spa. The prank was intended to be a surprise where people would be covered in fake blood and given Lamborghinis. However, it turned out that real bullets were used instead, leading to fatalities. The conversation also touches upon Dobrik's past content and his decision to remove certain videos. The shooting incident is overshadowed by recent allegations of sexual assault involving a vlog squad member and a woman from 2018. The confusion arises as some sources claim that Dobrik is being falsely accused of the Atlanta massacre, while others maintain that he was involved in the shooting incident at the spa. The conversation highlights the complexity of the situation and the need for clarification.

    • The importance of empathy and understanding in dealing with people's experiencesAcknowledge and validate unique experiences, even when they're different from our own. Empathy and understanding are crucial in dealing with rejection, discrimination, and second chances.

Everyone has unique experiences and challenges in life, and it's important to acknowledge and validate those experiences rather than minimizing them. The speaker shared stories of individuals who faced rejection and even violent reactions when coming out as gay. He also reflected on his own experience and how his father's dismissive behavior was just as hurtful. The conversation then shifted to the topic of second chances and the upcoming opening of Joe Rogan's new comedy club in Texas. The speaker and Rogan had a disagreement about the Austin real estate market, and the speaker shared his observation of the competitive market and the involvement of algorithms in making offers on houses. Overall, the conversation touched on various topics, but the underlying theme was the importance of empathy and understanding in dealing with people's experiences.

    • Disappointing Encounter with RealtorsThe speaker found realtors to be disengaged, unmotivated, and unsatisfying during their apartment search, expressing frustration with the consumerist culture that prioritizes convenience over deeper human connections.

The speaker's experience with realtors was disappointing and reminiscent of dealing with difficult children. They seemed disengaged, unmotivated, and even injured or unwell. The speaker used a negotiation strategy to throw them off guard, but overall found them to be unsatisfying. The speaker also expressed frustration with the consumerist culture of prioritizing convenience over deeper experiences and connections. They longed for more meaningful encounters and deeper human connections, rather than just having "everything they needed" in an apartment complex.

    • Appreciating Unique Communities and Controversial FiguresThe speaker cherishes living in diverse communities with complex individuals and defends controversial figures, like Katie Herzog and Jesse Singal, against cancel culture.

The speaker values living in communities with unique and often challenging individuals, contrasting his experiences with modern, characterless apartment complexes. He shares stories of desiring to live in infamous apartments due to their past traumatic events, and expresses dissatisfaction with those who attempt to cancel or harass others for their opinions. The speaker also mentions his appreciation for comedians Katie Herzog and Jesse Singal, despite the controversy surrounding them, and announces plans for a special episode and an in-person event related to a historical scandal.

    • Allegations of child kidnapping and trafficking in Omaha: Investigating the Franklin ScandalSpeakers discuss the potential investigation of the Franklin Scandal, but express concerns about backlash and sifting through information. A figure named 'young Don the sauce god' demands three hours of content, causing confusion and a desire to negotiate.

There have been allegations of a scandal involving the kidnapping and trafficking of children in Omaha, Nebraska, known as the Franklin Scandal. The speakers discuss the possibility of investigating further, but express concerns about potential backlash and difficulty in sifting through information. They also mention a figure named "young Don the sauce god," who is believed to be leading some sort of insurrection on a higher tier of their Patreon, demanding three hours of content. The speakers express confusion about the situation and the demands, and express a desire to negotiate and resolve the issue. Overall, the conversation revolves around the complexity and uncertainty surrounding the investigation of the Franklin Scandal and the demands from their audience.

    • Discussing fitness, cartoonists, controversies, and audience experiencesDom Iasello shared his feelings of being overshadowed, spoke about diverse audience reactions, and addressed controversies involving David Dobrik and Dollar Shave Club. Guests Katie Herzog and Jessie Sigl discussed Substack and its potential for writers.

The discussion revolved around various topics including fitness, cartoonists, audience experiences, and controversies. Dom Iasello expressed his frustration about feeling overshadowed by a cartoonist's physique during an interview. He also shared his experiences with different audience demographics and their reactions to his performances. The conversation touched upon the Nickelodeon controversy involving David Dobrik and the loss of his partnership with Dollar Shave Club. Dom expressed his support for David and encouraged those going through cancellations to join his show. The discussion also introduced Katie Herzog and Jessie Sigl as guests on the Tim Dillon Show. Substack, a platform for writers to fund their journalistic endeavors, was mentioned as a topic of interest for Jesse.

    • Social media amplifies criticisms against journalists, escalating disagreements into criminal allegationsJournalists face escalating attacks on social media, turning disagreements into criminal allegations, which can harm their reputation and career. It's crucial for journalists to fight back and protect themselves online.

Social media can be used to rapidly escalate criticisms against journalists, transforming disagreements into allegations of criminal behavior. The speaker, a journalist, has faced such accusations, including being labeled a stalker and harasser, despite a lack of substantiated evidence. These allegations, which began due to controversial articles about detransitioners, have escalated over the years, with some high-profile writers amplifying the claims. The speaker has faced threats, online harassment, and even financial offers to produce evidence if it exists. The speaker believes this is an attempt to ruin their reputation and remove them from the journalistic community. The speaker's approach to combating these attacks is to fight back online, sharing evidence of the long-standing rumors and garnering support from those who believe in their innocence. The speaker emphasizes that this is an escalation from criticizing opinions to criminalizing disagreements, and it's essential for journalists to be aware of this trend and take steps to protect themselves.

    • The shift in focus from gay rights to trans rightsThe conversation around trans rights goes beyond individual lives, it's also about the political infrastructure that supports it.

The debate around trans issues in media and society has gained significant attention in recent years, surpassing the discussion of gay and lesbian rights. This shift can be attributed to the success of the gay marriage movement and the subsequent pivoting of organizations and media outlets towards trans rights. Despite the small percentage of the population this issue affects, it has taken on an outsized role in the ongoing culture war. It's important to remember that behind the headlines and rumors, there are real people and complex issues at play. The conversation around trans rights is not just about individuals living their lives openly, but also about the political architecture that supports it. Understanding this context can help us navigate the ongoing debate with nuance and empathy.

    • Online perception vs. reality for trans individualsThe online world can distort trans experiences, creating insular bubbles and performative identities, making it hard to distinguish between genuine struggles and fakery. Focus on real experiences and discussions about discrimination.

The online perception of trans issues often differs significantly from the experiences of average trans individuals. The concentration of media and social media can create a distorted view, detracting from real discussions about discrimination and genuine struggles. Additionally, the digital native generation, who primarily form relationships and experiences online, may create insular bubbles and declare their identities, leading to a perceived open door policy and potential for fakery. This can make it difficult to distinguish between genuine experiences and performative identities, causing controversy and resistance when questioning authenticity. It's essential to remember that real experiences and genuine struggles should be the focus, rather than online debates and performative identities.

    • Defining identities online for validation and belongingOnline expression of identities can provide validation and a sense of belonging, but excessive reliance on online validation and uniform digital communities can lead to fragile self-concepts

There's a growing trend among people, particularly younger generations, to define themselves based on their identities, which can include racial, gender, or sexual identities, even if they don't genuinely identify that way. This can be seen as a way to seek validation and a sense of belonging, especially for those who feel isolated. However, this trend can also lead to fragile self-concepts and an unhealthy reliance on online validation from strangers. The proliferation of online culture and the uniformity of experiences within digital communities may contribute to this phenomenon, as people become more comfortable expressing themselves online than in real life. It's important to remember that identities are just one aspect of who we are, and that focusing too much on them can distract from the richness and complexity of our individual experiences.

    • Performative activism and tribalism distract us from real changeCompanies can engage in questionable practices while escaping criticism through symbolic gestures, and individuals should focus on making money during the five to seven year trend of performative activism and tribalism.

We're living in a culture where performative activism and tribalism have become dominant themes, allowing corporations to engage in questionable practices while escaping criticism through symbolic gestures. People are faking identities, and there's an unholy alliance between woke culture and big business. Companies like Nike, which have labor camps in China, can continue their unfair labor practices as long as they performatively support social causes. Similarly, schools with large endowments focus on performative diversity trainings instead of addressing educational inequities. This exhausting trend, according to the speaker, may only last for five to seven years, and individuals should focus on making money during this time. Ultimately, performative activism and tribalism are distracting us from real change.

    • Online content creation and monetization landscapeThe debate around controversial figures on Patreon and Substack, their impact on mainstream media, and the role of alternative platforms like Ghost, along with the financial implications for creators.

The landscape of online content creation and monetization is rapidly changing, and there seems to be a growing tension between different voices and platforms. Some creators believe there's a limited time for building online fan bases before that opportunity is extinguished. Patreon and Substack have emerged as popular platforms for independent creators, but there's a debate about the impact of big names and controversial figures on these platforms. Some argue that these figures, who may not find a place in mainstream media, are driving demand for their opinions, even if they're bigoted or reactionary. The mainstream media, in turn, is losing credibility due to this phenomenon. The conversation also touched upon the idea of deplatforming as a solution, with some suggesting that moving to alternative platforms like Ghost could help reduce the influence of controversial figures. Additionally, the discussion highlighted the financial aspect of these platforms, with some creators receiving advances and others relying solely on subscriptions. Overall, the conversation underscored the complexities and nuances of the online content creation and monetization landscape.

    • The Impact of Substack on Journalism vs. Decline of Local NewsThe shift to Substack and individual journalism is overshadowed by the more pressing issue of declining funding for local news and investigative reporting due to the demise of traditional media sources. It's crucial to find a sustainable business model for both established and emerging journalists while prioritizing vital reporting on public institutions.

The concern over Substack and the impact it may have on journalism is overshadowing the more pressing issue of the decline of local news and investigative reporting due to the demise of traditional media sources like local papers. Andrew Sullivan's move to Substack, while a topic of debate, pales in comparison to the long-term consequences of the loss of funding for in-depth reporting on public institutions. The conversation also touched upon the importance of having diverse voices and perspectives in journalism, as well as the need for a more nuanced and understanding approach to complex issues like gender identity. Ultimately, the future of journalism lies in finding a sustainable business model that supports both established and emerging journalists, while also ensuring that vital reporting on public institutions continues to be funded and prioritized.

    • Navigating Controversy and Deplatforming OnlineJessica and Katie discussed their experiences with controversy and attempts at deplatforming on social media, interactions with individuals like Mila and Jonah, and their involvement in podcasting and writing. They also mentioned upcoming projects, highlighting the challenges and complexities of expressing opinions online.

The discussion revolved around the experiences of Jessica and Katie, who have faced controversy and attempts at deplatforming on various social media platforms. They shared their perspectives on these experiences, including interactions with individuals like Mila and Jonah, and their involvement in podcasting and writing. They also mentioned upcoming projects, such as books and podcast appearances. The conversation was lighthearted at times, with jokes and playful banter between the guests. Overall, the conversation highlighted the challenges and complexities of navigating online communities and expressing controversial opinions in the digital age.

The BL Urgently Ruminates on Human Rights in ND: part 1-interview with Dr. Mayson Bedient

The BL Urgently Ruminates on Human Rights in ND: part 1-interview with Dr. Mayson Bedient

It's easy to justify staying out of politics. Often debates lead to unproductive arguments that damage relationships and just aren't fun to talk about. People exist in all forms and have priorities all over the place; the folks we elect hopefully represent the majority of their constituents accurately and will advance their interests accordingly. That's how democracy is supposed to work.

Unfortunately for queer, non-binary, and other LGBTQIA+ humans, staying out of it is not a privilege we get to enjoy, because like it or not, our queerness takes us out of "the majority". Staying out of politics leads to the situation that is currently present in the Dakotas, which is why this episode is coming out right now. As they say; haters are gonna hate and hateful legislators are gonna hatefully legislate.

South Dakota recently passed a swath of anti-LGBTQIA+ bills, including criminalizing gender-affirming care for trans youth in record time; they went from proposed to law (signed sealed and delivered courtesy Governor Nome) within 7 days. That is insane. I have worked with state governments for years in my career and often you're lucky to get a response to an email within a week, so the idea

North Dakota, always wanting to one-up their southern counterpart, is close behind with similar legislation.  These bills (summarized excellently here-thanks Faye Seidler Consulting) are going up for vote on 3-1 in North Dakota. They include criminalizing gender affirming care, criminalizing drag shows, and disqualifying trans athletes from participating in sports.

Take a listen to this exceptional interview with the articulate, bold, and brave Dr. Mayson Bedient as we dive in on what gender-affirming care is, what it does for queer youth who contemplate transitioning to a different gender than they were born in, and how this legislation will effectively make the state uninhabitable for trans youth.

To carry on with the rhyming scheme:

This episode is not a debate.
It exists to inform and educate
so we can build momentum and change the votes of elected officials
before they institutionalize discrimination in our state

If you can listen and share, that'd be great.

PS- contact your representatives and remind them that queer people exist in ND and belong here and that this short-sighted legislation is going to continue to tip the scales against North Dakota becoming a hub for diverse, inclusive businesses and communities. Faye Seidler also has a handy tracker to see how each representative has voted historically that can be found here

Ep 767 | Hershey's Celebrates Women... By Celebrating a Man | Guest: Bethany Mandel
Today we’re talking about Jon Stewart’s recent interview with Oklahoma state Senator Nathan Dahm, in which he defended drag show performances and claimed that guns are the leading cause of childhood deaths, which, while somewhat true, is a stretch when you look at certain other important factors. We dive into why and talk about the actual leading cause of child deaths — abortion. Then, we take a look at the Hershey’s Women’s History Month ad, which featured a man who identifies as a woman — a lesson is terrible marketing. Then, we’re joined by Bethany Mandel, author of "Stolen Youth: How Radicals Are Erasing Innocence and Indoctrinating a Generation," to discuss the woke war on children and how parents can respond. We discuss how the Left has infiltrated all spaces (medicine, schools, and media) in an effort to win over our children.
