    66. How to Come Home to Yourself with Martha Beck

    enFebruary 01, 2022

    Podcast Summary

    • Innovative solutions for comfort and support3rdlove transformed the bra industry with half cup sizes and virtual fitting rooms, while Pampers ensured gentle diaper protection and healthy skin for babies

Both 3rdlove and Pampers offer innovative solutions to common problems in their respective industries. 3rdlove revolutionized the bra industry by introducing half cup sizes and a virtual fitting room, ensuring a comfortable and stylish fit for all. Meanwhile, Pampers provides gentle and effective diaper protection with their Swaddlers diapers and free and gentle wipes, keeping babies' skin healthy and dry. Additionally, Martha Beck, a renowned life coach, has significantly impacted the speaker's life by offering guidance and support during challenging times. Her book, "Expecting Adam," brought joy and peace during the speaker's pregnancy, and their meeting years later was a surreal experience. Overall, these brands and individuals demonstrate the power of innovation, problem-solving, and support in making a difference in people's lives.

    • Defying societal expectations and finding inner guidanceDespite societal and cultural pressures, trusting your own values and making decisions based on inner guidance can lead to a more fulfilling life.

Life often presents us with unexpected challenges and choices, and the "right" decision can be subjective and influenced by various cultural and societal pressures. The speaker shares her personal story of defying societal expectations and her own advisors' advice to keep her child with Down syndrome, despite the potential backlash from both her Christian and feminist communities. She also discusses her realization that the answers to life's questions may not be found solely in academic or spiritual worlds, but rather in finding one's own sense of self and inner guidance. The speaker's experience of coming to terms with her own values and beliefs, and making decisions based on what resonates with her, ultimately led her to a more fulfilling life.

    • Finding inner wisdom through senses and trusted friendsEmbrace transformative moments, connect with senses, and lean on friends for support to live authentically and love loudly.

In moments of clarity, the inner wisdom to navigate life's challenges can be found by tuning out external pressures and connecting with one's senses. This was exemplified in a personal story shared about discovering one's identity and falling in love, despite societal expectations and fears. During these transformative moments, the support and guidance of trusted friends can be invaluable in helping to embrace the unknown and live authentically. Ultimately, the power to love and be true to oneself is the most important thing. As shared, "All you ever have to do is love each other out loud."

    • Emphasizing self-trust for authentic livingTrusting oneself and internal senses are vital for living an authentic life. Seeking guidance from trusted sources and learning new skills can help reconnect with inner self.

Trusting oneself and leaning into one's internal senses are crucial for living an authentic and fulfilling life. This was emphasized in the conversation between the speaker and Glennon Doyle, who shared how Glennon's guidance helped them come to terms with their own feelings and ultimately accept their son's coming out. The importance of self-trust was also highlighted in Martha Beck's context as a key component of finding one's true self and living in integrity. For those who may have lost touch with their inner selves, learning a new language, like through Rosetta Stone, can be a meaningful step towards personal growth and discovery. Additionally, seeking guidance from trusted teachers who remind us to trust ourselves can be invaluable in the journey back to self.

    • Suffering as a guide to finding ourselvesSuffering can help us recognize and address the root causes of emotional turmoil caused by societal pressures, leading to reconnection with our authentic selves and fulfilling lives

Suffering can serve as a valuable guide for those who have lost their sense of self. While some people may be naturally in tune with their inner compass, others may struggle to stay true to themselves in a world that imposes cultural norms and expectations. Suffering, in this context, is not just physical pain but the emotional turmoil that arises when we conform to societal pressures that go against our nature. The more we suppress our true selves, the more we suffer. However, suffering can also be a catalyst for change. When we recognize and address the root causes of our suffering, we can begin to reconnect with our authentic selves and live more fulfilling lives. It's essential to understand that everyone's journey is unique, and there's no one-size-fits-all solution for finding our way back to ourselves. But by embracing the discomfort of suffering and using it as a signpost to guide us towards our true selves, we can start the process of healing and growth.

    • Finding harmony with the natural flowAllow the universe to work through you for unexpected success and productivity, but also recognize the importance of pushing and surrendering in balance.

Letting go of the need to control and push can lead to unexpected success and productivity. This concept was illustrated through the story of a man who, after suffering and feeling overwhelmed, retreated into the wilderness to meditate. Upon returning, he found himself in a position to make a significant impact, raising millions for a cause and assembling a powerful team. This success came not through individual effort alone, but through a sense of being in harmony with the natural flow of things and allowing the universe to work through him. This idea, drawn from Eastern philosophy, contrasts with the Western mindset of needing to do everything oneself. It's important to recognize that there is a balance between pushing and surrendering, and that both are necessary for effective action. In inspired moments, one may feel like they are just observing or being carried by the flow of things, while in other instances, one may need to put in significant effort and hard work. The key is to find the right balance and trust in the natural flow of things.

    • Embrace inner wildness for personal growthWriting down frustrations and expressing forbidden thoughts can lead to personal growth and a taste of freedom

Life's challenges and pain can serve as catalysts for personal growth and freedom. When we feel stuck and overwhelmed, we can begin by acknowledging our frustrations and writing them down. This process allows us to tap into our inner wild animal, which is our natural instinct to resist and rebel against societal norms and expectations. By embracing this wildness and expressing our forbidden thoughts, we can experience a sense of liberation and enlightenment. This may be a painful and uncomfortable process, but the result is always a taste of freedom. So, push yourself to your limits, express your deepest desires, and let go of societal constraints. Remember, enlightenment, like the ocean, comes in many forms and may look strange at first, but its essence is always freedom.

    • Pampers: Superior Diaper Protection for BabiesPampers offers superior diaper protection and healthy skin care with Swaddlers diapers and Free & Gentle wipes. Expressing negative feelings can lead to self-discovery and growth.

For the gentle protective care of your little one, Pampers is the recommended diaper brand, offering superior absorption and leak-proof skin protection. Their Swaddlers diaper and Free & Gentle wipes work together to keep your baby's skin healthy. Additionally, expressing your true feelings, even the negative ones, can lead to self-discovery and personal growth. By acknowledging and addressing what we hate or resent, we can identify the instructions for our lives that are unique to us. For someone feeling overwhelmed by daily responsibilities and seeking the next step, it's essential to recognize and create space for joy and growth in life, allowing the things that should bring happiness to flourish instead of feeling like mere duties.

    • Find freedom through addressing deepest sources of resentmentIdentify and address deep rooted causes of resentment for true freedom and joy in life, make small changes and challenge societal expectations

True freedom and enlightenment cannot be achieved through radical life changes or constant resentment. Instead, it's important to identify and address the deepest sources of resentment and constraints in our lives. This may involve making small changes over time, like taking time for self-care activities or challenging societal expectations. The ultimate goal is to live a life that brings joy and freedom, rather than one that feels like a burden or a response to external pressures. Real love, as opposed to controlling or manipulative love, sets the beloved free and allows for authentic growth and fulfillment. It's a risk to step away from societal expectations and cultural norms, but the potential rewards are significant.

    • Embracing authenticity leads to unexpected opportunitiesTrusting inner knowing and living authentically can lead to personal growth and fulfilling opportunities, even if it means letting go of societal norms and constraints.

Living freely and authentically, even if it means letting go of societal norms and constraints, can lead to unexpected opportunities and personal growth. The speaker's decision to not tell a lie for a year led her to leave her community, family, and job, but ultimately led her to a fulfilling career as a life coach. Her near-death experience further reinforced the importance of living a life filled with love, joy, and authenticity. It's important to trust our inner knowing and follow our path, even if it seems unconventional or uncertain. The world may surprise us with opportunities and connections that align with our true selves.

    • Find joy and light in life, even during difficult timesFocus on things that bring genuine happiness, make one degree turns for significant changes, and remember it's okay to seek help when needed.

We all have the ability to find joy and light in our lives, even during difficult times. This was exemplified by a man named Adam, who experienced a profound encounter with a light that gave him the strength and reassurance to cope with the loss of his parents. Martha Beck encourages us to focus on the things that bring us genuine happiness and replace small parts of our day with those activities. This simple shift, called "one degree turns," can lead to significant changes in our lives. It's essential to remember that we can all do hard things and that it's okay to seek help when needed. By focusing on the light and the things that bring us joy, we can live a warmer, more fulfilling existence.

    • Believing in ourselves and moving forward through challengesWe all face hardships, but being true to ourselves and open to being known can lead to love and happiness. It's okay to hit rock bottom, but we have the strength to pick ourselves up and keep going.

Learning from the discussion in the text is that we all go through challenging times in life, but it's important to believe in ourselves and keep moving forward. The speaker in the text has faced hardships and adversity, but has come out the other side stronger and wiser. They've learned that being true to ourselves and being open to being known by others is key to finding love and happiness. It's okay to hit rock bottom sometimes, but we can always pick ourselves up and keep going. The best people are free to be themselves, and it's important to remember that we are not the problem. Through the joy and pain that life brings, we can do hard things and come out stronger on the other side. The podcast "We Can Do Hard Things" is a reminder that we all have the strength to overcome challenges and find our way back home.
