    88. Losing People To Boundaries, Fixing Toxic habits, & Feeling Like An Option (WWLD)

    en-usAugust 06, 2023

    Podcast Summary

    • Prioritize Your Own HappinessEven if it means making difficult decisions or causing temporary discomfort to others, prioritize your emotional well-being and make decisions that align with your values and goals.

Prioritizing your own happiness and well-being is crucial, even if it means making difficult decisions or causing temporary discomfort to others. In the first scenario, if you're in a job that makes you unhappy and others may be upset by your departure, consider whose comfort matters more. In the second scenario, if your boyfriend cheats on you with your best friend and tries to gaslight you, it's essential to recognize that his actions demonstrate a lack of accountability and respect, and it may be best to end the relationship. Lastly, if your ex leaves you to explore other options, remember that the pain of the loss may be his karma, and it's essential to ensure he doesn't regain access to you. In each situation, prioritize your emotional well-being and make decisions that align with your values and goals.

    • Comparing future partners to a past loving oneComparing new partners to a past loving one can hinder finding happiness in the present, as the void left by a significant source of support may be challenging to fill.

Being a genuinely caring and supportive partner can unintentionally give someone a false sense of confidence and make them believe they can find someone better. If you have been a significant source of happiness and support in someone's life, they may compare all future partners to you, leaving a void that no one else can fill. Your ex may even continue to compare and search for someone like you throughout their life, experiencing their own karma without you. It's essential to recognize your own value and the impact you've had on someone's life when letting go.

    • Navigating complex relationships and living arrangementsClear communication and trust are essential for building a positive and respectful relationship, especially when addressing fears and boundaries in complex living situations. Self-reflection is also important to cultivate a strong sense of self-worth and prevent being seen as an 'option'.

Communication and trust are key in navigating complex situations involving relationships and potential living arrangements. The speaker's experience as a gay man sheds light on the importance of establishing clear boundaries and open dialogue to alleviate concerns and prevent misunderstandings. It's important to acknowledge and address your partner's fears, and to work towards building a positive and respectful relationship with the person you wish to live with. Additionally, self-reflection is essential to ensure that your actions and behavior do not contribute to being seen as an "option" and to cultivate a strong sense of self-worth.

    • Believe in your worth and find genuine partnersBelieve in your self-worth, focus on partners who appreciate you, and accept that emotions after a breakup are normal signs of closure.

Building self-confidence and believing in your worth is crucial to avoid feeling like an option in relationships. Focus on seeking out partners who are genuinely impressed by you and not entertaining multiple people. Additionally, the end of a relationship, especially when an ex moves on, can bring up unexpected emotions. It's essential to recognize that these feelings don't necessarily mean you're not over the relationship. Instead, they signify the finality of the situation and the closure of that chapter in your life. Embrace the loss and allow yourself to move forward.

    • Expressing boundaries leads to deeper connectionsSetting boundaries can strengthen relationships by validating worth and leading to deeper connections

Setting boundaries can be a fearful experience due to the possibility of losing people or facing rejection. However, it's essential to remember that expressing boundaries can also lead to deeper connections and stronger relationships. When people respect and accommodate your boundaries, it validates your worth and strengthens the bond between you. Additionally, having a clear definition of failure and understanding that setbacks are a natural part of the process can help alleviate the fear of failure. Remember, setting boundaries and expressing your authentic self can lead to positive outcomes and stronger relationships.

    • Define and understand your situation for clarityDefining and understanding your situation can help alleviate fear and anxiety by providing clarity on potential outcomes and consequences.

Clarity is key to overcoming fear and anxiety. Get clear on what you define as failure, the likelihood of it happening, and the consequences. By walking through your worst-case scenario, you may find that it's not as bad as you thought. Additionally, if you've transitioned from a toxic situation to a new, healthier one, give yourself and the other person the grace to learn and adapt to the new way of being. In a relationship, communicate openly about past experiences and how things will be different moving forward. And if you're a micromanager like me, learn to trust that capable people can handle their responsibilities without constant checking in. Remember, fear and anxiety often stem from a lack of clarity, so take the time to define and understand your situation, and you'll be better equipped to face it head-on.

    • Transitioning to a new way of working or relationshipEffective communication and trust are essential for a successful transition. Micromanaging and toxic behaviors hinder progress, while open communication and trusting others can lead to a productive working relationship.

Effective communication and trust are key components in making a transition to a new way of working or relationship successful. The speaker shares her experience of adjusting to a new manager who is capable and trustworthy, but she was used to micromanaging and following up due to past experiences with less competent individuals. By discussing the transition and the importance of open communication, the manager was able to reassure the speaker that she didn't need to check in as much and that everyone on the team was capable of handling their responsibilities. The speaker learned that trusting others and asking for reassurance when needed are more productive ways to address insecurities than resorting to toxic behaviors like micromanaging or going through someone's phone. The process of transitioning and learning to work differently requires patience and open communication from both parties, but the end result can lead to a successful and productive working relationship.

    • Communicate openly about feelings in relationshipsFocus on adjusting and giving grace during transitions, avoid ignoring red flags, and allow yourself to feel emotions instead of forcing positivity.

In relationships, it's essential to communicate openly about your needs and feelings. Don't try to force positivity after a loss or in a new situation, as it's natural to feel overwhelmed and sad. Instead, focus on adjusting and giving yourself grace during the transition. Additionally, consider whether you may have been playing yourself in a relationship by ignoring red flags. Be honest with yourself about the situation before labeling someone else as the deceiver. Don't waste energy trying to find positivity in negative situations; instead, allow yourself to feel and accept the emotions.

    • Learning from past experiencesRecognize manipulation, assert your right to speak, and communicate effectively to prevent future hurt and build strong relationships.

Getting played in relationships or friendships is not a reason to be fearful or avoid new experiences. Instead, it's an opportunity to learn and grow. Being aware of the signs of manipulation and understanding how it feels can help prevent future hurt. Interruptions in conversations can be frustrating, but before addressing it, consider the reason behind the interruption. If someone is genuinely excited, they might just want to be heard. However, if someone consistently interrupts, asserting your right to speak can be effective. Additionally, observing their reaction can provide insight into their social awareness. Remember, communication is key in any relationship or interaction.

    • People might not notice your change unless you give them a reason toCommunication is key and taking advantage of opportunities can significantly improve your life

People may not notice your change in behavior unless you give them a reason to. The speaker suggests that unless someone provokes a response or asks a question, they likely won't notice if you're not talking or acting differently. He encourages anyone with a situation they'd like advice on to submit it anonymously through the link in the video description. The speaker also promotes Planet Fitness as a gym option that doesn't upsell members and encourages college students to fill out the FAFSA form to potentially receive financial aid and scholarships. Overall, the speaker emphasizes the importance of communication and taking advantage of opportunities that can improve one's life.

E308 Ask Nick - Finding The Baby Daddy

E308 Ask Nick - Finding The Baby Daddy

On today's episode of Ask Nick we begin with a woman who never got a DNA test on her daughter to find out which of the two men she slept with was her father. Years later she is realizing that it's not who she thought it was and doesn’t know if she should to tell him. Our next caller knows he is addicted to porn and has found his dream girl but knows his addiction is getting in the way of their relationship and he is ready to do what it takes to not lose her. Third, we speak with a gentleman who is starting to notice some co-dependency issues in his relationship. Finally, we speak with someone who was in a situationship but she considered it to be a relationship. When she tried to leave the relationship he would go back and forth on his feelings to keep her in his life.

“It’s like Titanic every Sunday night, like I will never let go…”
