9 Minutes That Every Parent Needs to Listen To

    enJanuary 29, 2022

    Podcast Summary

    • The importance of self-reflection and overcoming entitlementGain self-awareness by confronting entitlement, a crucial step for empathy, kindness, and gratitude.

Learning from Gary Vaynerchuk's speech at the event is the importance of self-reflection and overcoming entitlement. Vaynerchuk, who gained a large following on social media platforms that skew younger, shared his observations from reading thousands of direct messages over the last 3 years. He emphasized that entitlement is not the same as privilege and is a crucial starting point for empathy, kindness, and gratitude. This concept may be challenging for many of us to confront as it requires introspection rather than focusing on others. Vaynerchuk, who deeply appreciates his upbringing and immigrant background, believes that acknowledging and addressing entitlement is essential for personal growth and positively impacting the world.

    • Young adults feel appreciation and resentment towards parents due to entitlementParents providing excessive comforts can lead to entitlement, disconnecting children from realities, and hindering empathy, gratitude, and preparation for life. Focus on communication and understanding to raise well-rounded individuals.

Many young adults express deep appreciation for their parents while harboring resentment due to a sense of entitlement. This entitlement stems from parents providing excessive material comforts, creating a disconnect between their children and the realities of the world. This issue is not limited to those who have not experienced hardships, but also extends to those who have seen poverty and want to shield their children from it. However, this approach can lead to a lack of empathy and gratitude, as well as an inability to prepare children for the challenges of life. To move forward, it's crucial to eliminate entitlement and focus on genuine communication and understanding between parents and children. This requires active listening and prioritizing the child's needs and perspectives over societal expectations. Ultimately, the goal should be to raise well-rounded individuals who are equipped to navigate the world and find happiness and success.

    • Emphasizing Accountability and ListeningStrive for authenticity, accountability, and empathetic listening in personal and professional lives. Hold oneself responsible for results, listen to youth perspectives, and challenge societal hypocrisy.

Accountability and listening are crucial in life. The speaker emphasizes the importance of holding oneself responsible for results and not just admiring effort. He shares a personal story of his mother's tough love and how it instilled a deep sense of accountability and empathy in him. He also stresses the need to listen to the youth and their perspectives, rather than just focusing on what others think. The speaker believes that society is often quick to judge and react, and we need to start a conversation around entitlement and the hypocrisy that comes with it. In essence, we must strive for authenticity, accountability, and empathetic listening in our personal and professional lives.

    • Starting with personal growth and children's well-beingFocusing on self and kids' happiness can shift perspective, build authentic relationships, and create meaningful change

It's unrealistic to try and change the world all at once, but focusing on personal growth and the well-being of our children can have a profound impact on both our lives and the world around us. The resentment and entitlement we see in society today, from both parents and the venture community, stems from a focus on external validation and the belief that others don't believe in us. This mindset creates an uncomfortable and unsustainable situation, where we prioritize impressing others over truly connecting with them. By shifting our perspective and having a deeper conversation about entitlement, we can begin to build authentic relationships and create meaningful change. This is something I have witnessed firsthand with my own siblings and in the experiences of thousands of people I've spoken to. Ultimately, by starting with ourselves and focusing on the happiness and growth of our children, we can break free from the cycle of entitlement and create a more fulfilling and connected world.

The Most Important Question In Business

The Most Important Question In Business

Here’s the problem most people run into when they create content online: They think they have to have something to say. So many of you aren’t putting out content online because you think you need to have the perfect message, or something “valuable” to share (based on your own arbitrary opinion). And what I’m telling you is, you will get more business if you put out literally anything. If you’re an auto dealer, you could put out a 5 min video every afternoon just recapping what happened in your day. If you’re a real estate agent, you could post updates on what your opinions are about the Super Bowl teams. Get on social media and tell your truth … it’s really that simple.

Today, I talk to Dr. Gabor Maté. A celebrated speaker and bestselling author, Dr. Gabor Maté is highly sought after for his expertise on a range of topics, such as addiction, stress, and childhood development. Dr. Maté has written several bestselling books, including the award-winning In the Realm of Hungry Ghosts: Close Encounters with Addiction; When the Body Says No: The Cost of Hidden Stress; and Scattered Minds: The Origins and Healing of Attention Deficit Disorder. He is also the co-author of Hold On to Your Kids: Why Parents Need to Matter More Than Peers. His works have been published internationally in more than thirty languages.

Dr. Maté generously shares his deep understanding of childhood trauma, vulnerability, grief, and emotional distress. He explains what real trauma is and how time doesn’t necessarily lead to healing, how vulnerability is ingrained in us since we are young and the importance of these formative years to mold our emotional health, and the societal expectations we always try to meet but have never truly given us real fulfillment. We also exchange thoughts on dealing with grief, how we struggle to identify with the people we look up to, and how childhood experience varies for every child even when they are raised in a similar environment.

Trauma is a wound that has not fully healed which can be triggered at any point in our life so it matters that we are able to find a common ground and stay firm in what can give us healing, emotional stability, and happiness.
