A Business Meeting With Lions Linebacker Brandon Copeland

    enFebruary 16, 2018

    Podcast Summary

    • Building a personal empire and financial securityEmphasis on self-sufficiency, overcoming challenges, and long-term relationships for a strong foundation and future success

The importance of building a personal empire and financial security beyond reliance on external sources, such as a career in the NFL, was emphasized in this conversation. The speakers discussed their personal experiences, including overcoming injuries and starting businesses, while also sharing their plans for traveling and growing together. They highlighted the significance of being self-sufficient and building a strong foundation for the future. Additionally, the conversation touched upon the importance of long-term relationships, as one speaker shared how he met his fiancée in college and they have been best friends since then. Overall, the conversation conveyed themes of resilience, self-reliance, and the importance of personal growth and relationships.

    • Maximize your athletic leverage to expand your network and make meaningful connectionsAs an athlete, use your unique access to fans and industry professionals to build relationships and learn from them, increasing your opportunities for success both on and off the field.

As an active athlete, you have a unique leverage that opens up opportunities for you to meet and connect with people who can provide valuable advice and guidance. Two years ago, my brother and I started a sports representation business, and I've since become well-educated about the industry. I've found that many athletes and agents fail to take advantage of the opportunities available to them during their playing careers. However, being an athlete grants you access to a vast network of fans and potential connections. You may be surprised by how many people you can meet and the impact those connections can have on your career and personal growth. It's essential to make the most of this leverage and actively seek out opportunities to connect with individuals who can help you succeed both on and off the field. For instance, I would be happy to meet with any athlete, regardless of their position or team, as they have something valuable to offer. On the other hand, meeting an A-list businessperson might be more challenging due to their busy schedules. Therefore, my advice is to be proactive and utilize social media platforms like Twitter to engage with fans, industry professionals, and potential mentors. By doing so, you'll expand your network and increase your chances of making meaningful connections that can benefit you in the long run.

    • Building relationships with fans and teammatesAthletes should focus on connecting with fans and teammates for valuable opportunities and stronger career growth.

Athletes, especially those not yet at the peak of their fame, should focus on building relationships with their fans and teammates. Die-hard fans, who may not be as well-known, can have a significant impact on an athlete's business and career. These fans can provide valuable connections and opportunities. Additionally, athletes should learn to delegate tasks and trust their team when they cannot be fully present. Being a micromanager may not be sustainable, especially when schedules are out of their control. Understanding this and creating a strong team can lead to greater success in the long run.

    • Building an empire requires trust and delegationEmpires aren't built by doing everything yourself, trust and delegation are essential. Earn trust, allow people to prove themselves, and leverage logos to build a team.

Effective delegation and trust are essential for growth and scaling a business. The speaker shared his personal experience of micromanaging due to fear, but emphasized that it's impossible to build an empire by doing everything yourself. He highlighted the importance of earning trust and allowing people to prove themselves over time. Additionally, he suggested leveraging logos, or brands, to build a team of smart people and delegate tasks to them. The speaker acknowledged that this advice may seem macro, but encouraged asking specific questions for more guidance. He also emphasized that entrepreneurs often underestimate their age and experience.

    • Engage with industry professionals and passionate fansNetworking is vital in the film industry. Reach out to influential figures and engage with passionate fans to learn, grow, and potentially advance your career.

Networking is crucial in achieving your goals, especially in the film industry. Be attentive to those who show genuine interest in your passions, as they could potentially be influential figures. Engage with fans of your favorite teams on social media, as they might be industry professionals. Reach out to them during off-seasons and express your desire to meet and learn from them. Shoot for the moon when it comes to the people you want to connect with, as you never know who might make a difference in your career. Remember, every interaction is an opportunity to learn and grow. So, be open-minded, engage with others, and never underestimate the power of a genuine fan.

The Most Important Question In Business

The Most Important Question In Business

Here’s the problem most people run into when they create content online: They think they have to have something to say. So many of you aren’t putting out content online because you think you need to have the perfect message, or something “valuable” to share (based on your own arbitrary opinion). And what I’m telling you is, you will get more business if you put out literally anything. If you’re an auto dealer, you could put out a 5 min video every afternoon just recapping what happened in your day. If you’re a real estate agent, you could post updates on what your opinions are about the Super Bowl teams. Get on social media and tell your truth … it’s really that simple.

5 Core Pieces of Value to Get You to Succeed

5 Core Pieces of Value to Get You to Succeed

There are so many people racing to earn more money than they can even spend even if they have to sacrifice their happiness and livelihood to do so. The really disturbing part about this is that most of these people only want the money so they can be flashy and show off their overly expensive cars (that they don't even want) and other dumb things to other people. Happiness needs to be the Northstar that we strive towards. If we aren't aiming to be happy, then is it really worth having more money than you can spend and more cars than you can drive? —
