    enJanuary 15, 2018

    Podcast Summary

    • From Privilege to Addiction and BackExperiencing hardships can lead to compassion and unity, as anyone can face adversity. Prioritize projects that serve the most people in the long term.

Experiencing hardships and losing everything can lead to a newfound sense of gratitude, unity, and compassion towards others. Amy Dresner, a former stand-up comic and recovering drug addict, shares her story of growing up privileged in Beverly Hills and descending into addiction, ultimately leading her to a felony conviction and a stint on a community service chain gang. Through her raw and honest writing, she encourages listeners to show compassion towards those going through similar struggles, as anyone can fall victim to addiction or hardship. Rich Roll, the podcast host, emphasizes the importance of prioritizing energies and focusing on projects that serve the most people in the long term. He shares his recent productive period, including editing a new book, working on a cookbook, and recording an audiobook for another author. Despite missing social media, he acknowledges the need to prioritize and aims to continue creating content that addresses important issues like addiction and recovery.

    • Healing through meditation and sharing truthsMeditation apps like 'Waking Up' and podcasts such as 'The Conversation' offer resources for healing and inspiration. Recognize unhealthy compulsions and embrace truths for personal growth and impact on others.

Both meditation and sharing one's truth have the power to heal and inspire. The speaker highly recommends the meditation app "Waking Up" for its extensive resources and accessibility. Meanwhile, the podcast "The Conversation" offers raw and honest stories of overcoming addiction and shame, making it worth a listen regardless of personal experiences. The speaker encourages broadening the definition of addiction and recognizing the presence of unhealthy compulsions in everyday life. Ultimately, facing and owning our truths can lead to healing and serving as an example for others. Additionally, the speaker playfully acknowledges the importance of humor and shared experiences, even when discussing serious topics.

    • Honesty and vulnerability in 'My Fair Junkie'The speaker's raw honesty resonated with the reader, despite different experiences. She needed excitement in early sobriety but now prefers small, men-only meetings. Growing up privileged, she judged others, but later realized the joke was on her.

The memoir "My Fair Junkie" stands out for its honesty and vulnerability, making the reader feel connected despite different experiences. The recovery scene in Los Angeles, particularly Hollywood, is unique and can be incestuous. The speaker shares how she needed the drama and excitement in her early sobriety, but now prefers small, men-only meetings. The speaker and the author both grew up in privileged areas of LA and felt like outsiders, with the speaker being judgmental of those who partied. However, she later realized the joke was on her. The memoir's raw honesty resonated with the speaker, who has been sober for five years, not for the first time, and reflects on her past judgments and growth.

    • Childhood experiences and relationships impact intimacy and sexualityEarly experiences and relationships can shape our attitudes towards sex and intimacy, making it difficult to separate them from our personal and creative lives later on.

Our past experiences and relationships can significantly shape our present behaviors and attitudes towards intimacy and sexuality. The speaker's upbringing, with a primary caretaker who was also her father, led her to suppress her sexuality and stay asexual as a reaction. Her father's creative background, including writing pornography, added another layer of complexity to their relationship. Later in life, when she became a writer and published a book with explicit content, she struggled with sharing it with her father, who had always been her main parent figure. The fear of losing his approval and the memory of his disapproval during her drug use episodes made it difficult for her to separate her intimacy and art. This complex relationship history influenced her attitudes towards sex, relationships, and her own writing.

    • External factors can influence addictionUnderstanding individual's unique journey with addiction and recognizing external factors that may trigger new substance use is crucial.

People's experiences with addiction can vary greatly, and external factors can play a significant role in leading individuals to try new substances, even if they have previously sworn off certain types of behaviors. The speaker, for example, had a predisposition to addiction due to her family history, but she didn't fully understand the extent of it until she was exposed to new environments and experiences. In her case, she made a conscious decision to be open to new experiences and eventually tried crystal meth, which felt like it made her feel normal. It's important to recognize that everyone's journey with addiction is unique, and external factors, such as social pressure or curiosity, can be powerful triggers.

    • The Complex and Unpredictable Nature of Drug UseDrug use can lead to compulsive behavior, dangerous situations, addiction, depression, long-term brain damage, and negative consequences despite risks and interventions.

The speaker's experience with drugs, specifically methamphetamine, drastically transformed her life in various ways. At first, she felt a sense of euphoria, confidence, and creativity, but eventually, her use became compulsive and led to dangerous situations. The experience also took a toll on her physical and mental health, resulting in addiction, depression, and long-term brain damage. Despite the risks and negative consequences, she continued using for an extended period, even as her parents tried to intervene. The speaker's story highlights the complex and unpredictable nature of drug use and the potential for long-term harm.

    • Fear of losing creativity fuels addiction cycleFear of losing creativity and functioning drives individuals to continue using addictive substances, creating a challenging cycle to break.

Addiction is a complex issue driven by fear and the belief that the substance is necessary for creativity or functioning in life. The speaker in this conversation shares her experience of using amphetamines to cope with depression and borderline personality disorder, despite her father's concerns and attempts at intervention. She refused treatment and even tried to obtain prescription speed through deception. The fear of losing the substance and the belief that she would not be able to function or be creative without it kept her in the cycle of addiction. The speaker acknowledges the tremendous fear of letting go and the belief that the substance fuels creativity, making it a challenging cycle to break. This fear is common among creatively inclined individuals struggling with addiction. The relationship between pain and creativity is intertwined, and addressing addiction requires overcoming the fear and terror that exceeds the misery experienced by perpetuating it.

    • Personal struggles fuel creativityOvercoming addiction and mental health issues can lead to creativity and success. Seek help to maintain sobriety and growth.

Personal struggles and hardships, including addiction and mental health issues, can actually fuel creativity and resonate with others, leading to a successful career. However, the individual must ultimately reach a turning point and seek help to overcome these challenges and maintain sobriety. The illusion of needing to self-destruct for inspiration is debunked through real-life examples of artists who have found success after getting sober. The speaker's own experiences with addiction, seizures, and various mental health diagnoses highlight the importance of addressing these issues and the emotional turmoil that comes with being labeled and stigmatized by the medical community. Ultimately, owning one's brokenness and embracing vulnerability can lead to growth and manipulating that vulnerability for personal gain.

    • Finding comfort in comedy and writing during personal strugglesComedy helped the speaker connect with others, but writing became her preferred way to express herself and share her message after facing personal challenges.

Comedy helped the speaker find her voice and connect with others during a difficult time in her life, but after facing personal struggles and hitting rock bottom, she found writing to be a more fulfilling and comfortable way to express herself and share her message. The speaker's experience with comedy, addiction, and relationships illustrates the complexities and challenges of navigating personal growth and finding balance in life. Despite the interruptions and hardships, she remains resilient and continues to pursue her passions in her own way.

    • Understanding Relapse as a Normal Part of RecoveryRelapse is a common experience for those in recovery, and should be viewed as a normal part of the journey rather than a sign of failure or weakness. Finding the right recovery program and approach is crucial for long-term success.

Relapse is a common experience for many individuals on the journey to sobriety. The speaker shares her personal story of struggling with addiction and relapsing multiple times before finally finding long-term recovery. She emphasizes that the stigma surrounding relapse can be harmful and misinformed, as it's often seen as a sign of weakness or failure. Instead, relapse should be viewed as a normal part of the recovery process, and individuals should be encouraged and supported throughout their journey. The speaker also emphasizes the importance of finding the right recovery program and approach that works best for each individual, rather than adhering to a one-size-fits-all solution. Overall, the conversation highlights the complexities and challenges of addiction recovery, and the importance of compassion, understanding, and support for those struggling with substance use issues.

    • The speaker shares their personal experience with 12-Step program's benefits and challengesThe 12-Step program has imperfections but provides significant benefits for many individuals in their recovery journey. Open dialogue about the program can help address issues and reduce stigma.

While the 12-Step program has its challenges and criticisms, it has been a lifesaver for many individuals, including the speaker in this conversation. The speaker is proud of their recovery journey and the role that 12-Step played in it, despite taking shots at its imperfections. The tradition of anonymity in 12-Step communities is important, but there is a need for open dialogue about the program to help those struggling with addiction better understand it and potentially enter recovery sooner. The speaker acknowledges that there are issues within the fellowship, such as power imbalances and predatory behavior, but these issues exist in all communities and it's important to address them. Ultimately, the speaker believes that the benefits of the 12-Step program far outweigh its flaws and that open discussions about the program can help reduce the stigma and misconceptions surrounding it.

    • Being a woman in recovery: Unique challenges and stigmaWomen in recovery face unique challenges, including shame and isolation due to societal stigma. Owning one's recovery and destigmatizing addiction can provide hope and inspiration.

Being a woman in recovery comes with unique experiences that differ significantly from those of men. Anonymity, which is a crucial aspect of recovery, can feel shameful in certain social contexts, such as corporate jobs or relationships with non-addicts. These individuals may not understand the humor behind addiction-related topics and may view consumption as a sign of sickness rather than recovery. Women in recovery may feel the need to hide their past and current struggles, leading to feelings of shame and isolation. However, owning one's recovery and destigmatizing addiction are essential for breaking the stigma and allowing others to feel less alone and ashamed. The transformative power of being unfiltered and real can provide hope and inspiration for those who have relapsed multiple times and are struggling to believe in their ability to recover.

    • Sharing uncomfortable stories leads to growth and connectionVulnerability through storytelling can lead to personal growth, empowerment, and deeper connections with others. Despite feeling ashamed or vulnerable, sharing uncomfortable experiences can provide a sense of freedom and resilience against judgment.

Vulnerability and sharing personal stories, even those that make us uncomfortable, can lead to growth, empowerment, and connection with others. The speaker in this conversation shares how she wrote about her own uncomfortable experiences in her book, despite feeling ashamed or vulnerable, and found that it led to a sense of freedom and armor against judgment. She also discusses how she learned to be more vulnerable in her relationships, but was met with resistance, leading her to reconsider the value of wearing her experiences as a badge of courage. Ultimately, she learned to embrace vulnerability as a way to heal and move forward after heartbreak.

    • Relapsing and the Road to RecoveryOwn up to mistakes, seek support, find strength, and practice self-compassion in the journey to overcome addiction setbacks.

Recovery from addiction is a complex and ongoing process. The speaker in this conversation shares their experience of relapsing after a long period of sobriety, and how they were able to get back on track. They emphasize the importance of owning up to mistakes, seeking support from loved ones and the community, and finding the strength to keep going. They also mention the role of shame and the need to address it publicly in order to heal fully. Ultimately, they reflect on the importance of self-compassion and resilience in the face of setbacks.

    • Addiction recovery and new compulsionsAddiction recovery doesn't guarantee a 'rose garden' life, but leaves individuals vulnerable to other compulsions. Emotional management is crucial to prevent potential new addictions.

The author's experiences with addiction led her to develop resilience and a belief in her ability to overcome challenges. However, when she quit using drugs and alcohol, she found herself facing raw emotions and turned to other compulsions, including sex, to cope. Sex became a significant part of her recovery journey, which is detailed in her book. It's important to understand that removing addictive substances doesn't make life a "rose garden," but instead leaves individuals vulnerable to other compulsions. The author's experiences highlight the importance of having tools to manage emotions and the potential for sex to be a manifestation of underlying addiction.

    • Personal story of sex addiction and its similarities to drug addictionSex addiction, like drug addiction, can leave individuals feeling ashamed, powerless, and seeking control. However, the root cause may be self-worth and desire for love and connection, not the behavior itself.

Sex addiction, much like drug addiction, can be a destructive and compulsive behavior that leaves individuals feeling ashamed, powerless, and desperate for change. The speaker in this conversation shares her personal experience of using sex as a way to feel in control and desired, only to be left feeling used and betrayed. She describes the intense anticipation and dopamine hit she experienced before and during each encounter, which she came to realize was strikingly similar to her experiences with drug addiction. The speaker ultimately reached a bottom when she experienced a particularly embarrassing and mortifying encounter, leading her to seek help from Sex Addicts Anonymous. However, she found the program unhelpful due to its rigid rules and judgmental attitude towards her experiences. Ultimately, she realized that her problem was not with sex itself, but with her own self-worth and desire for love and connection. The speaker's story highlights the complex and often stigmatized nature of sex addiction and the need for compassionate and individualized approaches to healing.

    • Understanding behaviors as opportunities for growthUnhealthy behaviors can be signs of deeper issues, not fatal illnesses. Recognizing and addressing the underlying causes, and finding healthy ways to cope, can lead to self-awareness, growth, and ultimately, recovery.

Unhealthy behaviors, including addiction to substances or relationships, can be seen as manifestations of a deeper issue rather than a fatal illness. The speaker shares her personal experience of finding healing and growth through intimacy after a difficult relationship, and how she learned to recognize and manage her behaviors as part of her recovery process. It's important to understand that these behaviors don't have to lead to shame or self-destruction, but rather an opportunity for self-awareness and growth. The road to recovery may involve recognizing and addressing the underlying causes of these behaviors, and finding healthy ways to cope and manage them. The speaker also highlights the importance of self-care, such as sleep and nurturing activities, in maintaining her recovery and fulfilling her purpose in helping others through her writing.

The process of writing and sharing, combined with the humility and hard work gained through community labor, were instrumental in the speaker's personal growth and transformation.

    • Sharing vulnerable experiences leads to connectionBeing open about personal experiences, even taboo topics, can resonate with others and lead to impact. Find your warrior strength to own your story and connect with others.

Being open and honest about personal experiences, even the most vulnerable and taboo topics, can lead to connection and impact on others. The speaker shares her journey of writing about sex, relationships, and sobriety, which resonated with many people regardless of their own substance use struggles. She started writing after being encouraged by her first editor and has since had her work published in various outlets. The speaker's willingness to be vulnerable and go "all the way to the wall" with her experiences has helped many people, especially in the area of relationships. She encourages others to find their warrior strength and own their stories, even if it means being vulnerable and potentially facing criticism.

Ultimately, she reflects on how her experiences in AA helped her gain a new perspective on life and connect with others in a deeper way. Despite initial anger and hurt feelings, she learned to move past it and appreciate the support and encouragement she received from others. The speaker also emphasizes the importance of staying true to oneself and being unapologetically honest, even when it may be uncomfortable or unpopular. Ozempic: Weight Loss Miracle Drug or Something Darker? Johann Hari on The Benefits & Risks
This week, I’m joined by Johann Hari, New York Times bestselling author, journalist, and speaker, to explore his journey into the world of the new weight loss drug phenomenon: Ozempic. Johann shares his surprising firsthand experience injecting himself weekly with the drug for over a year, leading to dramatic weight loss but also complex side effects. We discuss the staggering potential of these “magic pills” to curb the global obesity epidemic, but also the alarming risks like thyroid cancer, pancreatitis, and muscle wasting. Johann provides a nuanced look at the bigger picture—examining the role of pharmaceutical profit, societal pressures around body image, and whether medicalizing thinness addresses root causes. His investigation stretches from the science labs of Iceland to the food culture of Japan. This discussion ultimately confronts sobering philosophical questions about the ethics of pharmaceutical shortcuts versus growth through struggle. Please enjoy! Adam Shankman
Acclaimed movie producer and director Adam Shankman is best known for his upbeat, family-friendly movies, including "Hairspray," "A Walk to Remember" and "The Pacifier," but behind the scenes, Shankman says he spent years grappling with substance abuse and self-loathing. Growing up in Hollywood, Shankman, who is openly gay, remembers being "an incredibly happy kid." But when he was three years old, he says, his parents set him up with a doctor who was doing a study on sexual identity. Unbeknownst to his parents at the time, Shankman says he was placed in "conversion therapy." When he was a teen, Shankman turned to alcohol and later drugs to quiet the "ugly voice" in his head. In 2012, Shankman says, he entered a "really dark" place and the following year checked himself into a month-long rehab program -- where he discovered meditation. Sara Bareilles: Anxiety, Anger, and Art

Sara Bareilles: Anxiety, Anger, and Art
Taming Anxiety Series - Episode 1: Today is a big day here on the podcast, both because we have a fantastic new episode, and because this episode is actually kicking off a series we have been wanting to produce for a long time, called “Taming Anxiety.”   Anxiety is a massive issue in our society. Even before the pandemic, it was on the rise. Now, the situation is even worse. Chances are it has afflicted you or someone you love at some point, on some level: maybe you’ve received an actual diagnosis, like generalized anxiety disorder, or maybe you’re prone to symptoms closer to panic, or perhaps you’re just susceptible to a bit too much garden-variety worrying. Maybe your kids are increasingly anxious. Or maybe, like me, you’ve got a few different items on the menu–some low-level professional freakouts here, some panic attacks in elevators (or on live TV) over there…   Anyway, the bad news is that anxiety is unlikely to disappear overnight. But the good news is that you can change your relationship to it. Hence this two week series we’re launching today. We’ve got two episodes with scientists and one episode with a meditation expert on deck to help you learn to tame your anxiety. And we’ve even got a free meditation challenge over in the Ten Percent Happier app to help you bring these lessons into your practice.   But before we get to that, let me introduce today’s guest. We’re kicking things off with a personal story. Sara Bareilles is a fearsome polymath: a singer, songwriter, composer, actor… the list goes on. She earned Tony and Grammy Award nominations for the Broadway musical Waitress, she’s got a new album out called Amidst the Chaos: Live from the Hollywood Bowl, and she stars in the new Tina Fey-produced series Girls5eva, which is streaming right now on Peacock.    Behind all this artistic and professional success is a meditator who is deliberately open and public about her struggles with anxiety and depression. In this conversation, she talks about: her history of anxiety and depression; the relationship between suffering and art, and whether meditation might defang someone’s creativity; how she works with anger; her relationship to social media; and we get an intimate glimpse into the back-stories behind some of her hit songs.   This is the first episode in our new “Taming Anxiety” series, and there will be an accompanying meditation challenge over in the Ten Percent Happier app. It’s also called “Taming Anxiety,” and it launches next week, on Monday, June 21st. The idea here is that you will be able to use the challenge to integrate everything you’ve learned in the podcast series into your neurons.    Join the Taming Anxiety Challenge by downloading the Ten Percent Happier app: https://10percenthappier.app.link/install. You should be prompted to join the Challenge after registering your account. If you've already downloaded the app, just open it up or visit this link to join: https://10percenthappier.app.link/TamingAnxietyChallenge.    Full Shownotes: https://www.tenpercent.com/podcast-episode/sara-bareilles-355 See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
