Billboards, Production Capacity, & Gary Gets Salty

    enNovember 24, 2015

    Podcast Summary

    • Gary's Disappointment with the Jets and Moody MoodDespite feeling let down by the Jets and in a sour mood, Gary Vaynerchuk remains committed to delivering content and found potential in the Knicks' fourth pick, Obi Toppin.

Gary Vaynerchuk, in this episode of AskGaryVee, shared his disappointment over missing a prediction about the Jets and announced he would no longer be making predictions for the team. He expressed his frustration over several missed opportunities and meetings due to his salty mood. However, he found a silver lining in the potential of the Knicks' fourth pick, Obi Toppin. The episode had a sad vibe, with Gary expressing his dissatisfaction and even wearing a yellow shirt instead of black as a sign of his mood. Despite this, he assured listeners that he would still be delivering content for them, even if he wasn't in the best state of mind. Sean Ryan, a project manager at VaynerMedia, made an appearance and shared his long history with the company, starting as an intern when Gary was still working for Cork's Wine.

    • Companies shift from digital to traditional advertisingTech companies explore billboards and other traditional media to reach new audiences and expand their customer base, despite high costs due to digital ad saturation

As tech companies like Slack, Snapchat, and Yahoo reach large scales and have substantial marketing budgets, they begin to explore advertising avenues beyond digital platforms to target demographics that may not be as active online. Billboards, despite being overpriced according to Gary Vaynerchuk, can offer value for these companies looking to expand their reach and gain new customers. This shift in media deployment is due to the saturation of digital advertising and the need to attract new audiences. Companies like Airbnb, Uber, and Slack have already maximized their digital ROI, leading them to overpay for traditional media like billboards in order to continue growing.

    • Navigating the uncertainty of work and lifeUse intuition and consider long-term benefits when deciding to work for free or not. Adjust as needed in business and prioritize projects that align with goals and values.

Life and work involve taking risks and making decisions without having all the information. Anthony asked about the recommendation of working for free and how to discern if someone is genuinely offering exposure or just trying to take advantage. The answer is, you can't always know for sure. You have to use your intuition and consider the long-term benefits. DRock shared his experience of doing 20 free projects, only one of which paid off in the long run. Similarly, in business, not every pitch or meeting will result in a deal, but it's important to make informed judgments and adjust as needed. The freelance market is a supply and demand game, and if there are people willing to work for free, then that's just the way it is. It's important to remember that we don't know many things in life, and we make decisions and adjust accordingly. Managing high demand and long production latency requires clear communication and setting realistic expectations. It's important to prioritize and focus on the projects that align best with your goals and values. Ultimately, it's about finding a balance and making the best decisions with the information available to us.

    • Balancing project resources and qualityConsider trade-offs when managing projects: hire pricier freelancers, ask team to work longer hours, or deliver with fewer resources, potentially impacting quality. In marketing, access to more audience data, such as first names, can enhance personalized strategies.

When managing projects, especially those with creative elements, there are trade-offs to consider. You can either hire freelancers with higher hourly rates and less margin, ask your team to work longer hours, or try to deliver with fewer resources, potentially sacrificing quality. Additionally, as marketers, we are always eager for more data to target audiences effectively. If I could change one thing about Facebook's API for marketers and business pages, I would request the ability to target audiences by their first names, as this data point is currently not accessible. This would allow for more personalized and effective marketing strategies.

    • The importance of having a clear goal for personal growthReflect on personal goals, empathize with those who've given up, but stay focused and clear on objectives for personal growth and success.

Having a clear goal is essential for personal growth and achievement. Gary Vaynerchuk shared his personal experiences of gathering a community of people with a shared identity online and the importance of having a clear vision, whether it's buying a football team or ensuring that everyone attends one's funeral. He emphasized that without clarity, individuals may get lost and may focus on superficial or short-term goals out of pain or ambition. Vaynerchuk encouraged his audience to reflect on their own goals and to leave comments on his Instagram account, where he is deeply engaged. He acknowledged the importance of empathizing with those who may have given up on their goals but emphasized the importance of staying focused and clear on one's objectives. Vaynerchuk's words serve as a reminder that having a clear vision is crucial for personal growth and success.

    • Pursuing Happiness Beyond Financial SuccessTrue happiness comes from self-awareness and fulfilling personal passions, not just financial success. Appreciate the ability to pursue goals and live a life of gratitude.

While success in business may bring attention and envy from others, true happiness comes from being self-aware and pursuing what brings fulfillment to one's life. The speaker acknowledges the appeal of a stable, lower-middle-class lifestyle and the simplicity it brings, but also emphasizes that it takes hard work and talent to achieve financial success. He encourages individuals not to complain about their circumstances, but rather to take action towards their goals. The speaker also emphasizes the importance of appreciating the fact of being alive and having the ability to pursue one's passions. He encourages a mindset of gratitude and simplicity, rather than envy and entitlement.

    • Focus on present happiness and engagementEngage in the present moment and connect with others, rather than worrying about external factors.

Finding happiness in the present moment, no matter where you are or what you're doing, is more important than worrying about external factors like work or sports events. The speaker encourages engagement and connection with others, as seen in his call for lurkers to leave comments. Another topic that came up was the upcoming Thanksgiving holiday and the question of what wine people plan to drink. Despite a momentary lapse into discussing the Jets game, the overall tone was positive and heartfelt. So, take a cue from the speaker and focus on enjoying the present moment, and don't forget to leave a comment!

The Most Important Question In Business

The Most Important Question In Business

Here’s the problem most people run into when they create content online: They think they have to have something to say. So many of you aren’t putting out content online because you think you need to have the perfect message, or something “valuable” to share (based on your own arbitrary opinion). And what I’m telling you is, you will get more business if you put out literally anything. If you’re an auto dealer, you could put out a 5 min video every afternoon just recapping what happened in your day. If you’re a real estate agent, you could post updates on what your opinions are about the Super Bowl teams. Get on social media and tell your truth … it’s really that simple.

5 Core Pieces of Value to Get You to Succeed

5 Core Pieces of Value to Get You to Succeed

There are so many people racing to earn more money than they can even spend even if they have to sacrifice their happiness and livelihood to do so. The really disturbing part about this is that most of these people only want the money so they can be flashy and show off their overly expensive cars (that they don't even want) and other dumb things to other people. Happiness needs to be the Northstar that we strive towards. If we aren't aiming to be happy, then is it really worth having more money than you can spend and more cars than you can drive? —
